Invisible characters can control word breaks or text direction; deleting them indiscriminately can damage otherwise correct text.
Why an invisible character may matter
A character can have no visible width and still affect how text is read or laid out. Its purpose depends on its code point and context—not simply on whether you can see it.

Zero-width spaces and word boundaries
U+200B ZERO WIDTH SPACE indicates a word-break or line-break opportunity without adding intrinsic width. The Unicode Standard describes it as useful in writing systems that do not normally separate words with visible spaces, including Thai, Myanmar, Khmer, and Japanese. It may be intentional rather than a stray artifact. The character name is not a guarantee that it can never affect visual layout. Unicode Standard, Version 16.0, §23.2
Directional marks and controls
U+200E LEFT-TO-RIGHT MARK, U+200F RIGHT-TO-LEFT MARK, and U+061C ARABIC LETTER MARK are zero-width directional marks. Unlike U+200B, they do not indicate a word break. They can help determine display order in text mixing right-to-left and left-to-right scripts. Unicode also defines bidirectional control characters that work in coordinated pairs; removing one without accounting for its partner can change how text is interpreted or displayed. Find the character before changing the document
- Make the edit reversible. Work on a copy or confirm that the document has a recoverable revision or undo history.
- Expose Unicode controls. Use an editor or inspection tool that can show control characters or code points. Microsoft documents a Windows 11 Notepad mode named “Show Unicode control characters,” including visibility for U+202E RIGHT-TO-LEFT OVERRIDE and U+202D LEFT-TO-RIGHT OVERRIDE. - Record the exact code point and inspect its neighbors. Note where it occurs and look at the surrounding words, punctuation, line breaks, links, or identifiers. A visual symptom alone does not tell you whether the cause is a zero-width space, a directional mark, a soft hyphen, a nonbreaking space, or another character.
- Decide whether that occurrence is unwanted. Consider the language and text direction. A zero-width space may be enabling a valid break; a directional mark or control may be needed to display mixed-script text correctly.
- Remove or replace only confirmed unwanted instances. If you are handling paired bidirectional controls, preserve a coherent set rather than deleting one side blindly.
- Review the edited copy against the original. Check displayed order in mixed-direction text, line breaks, and any links or identifiers near the change.
Choose an inspection route that fits the document
You can inspect within an editor that exposes Unicode controls or use a separate text-inspection workflow. Choose a route that identifies the code point, preserves document formatting, supports the document’s scripts, and allows you to undo or compare changes. The documented Notepad feature is one specific option, not evidence that Word, Google Docs, or every editor has the same setting or capability.
Once you know the code point, consult current documentation for the editor you are using before relying on Find and Replace syntax. Search patterns and escape sequences are not established as dependable across Word and Google Docs, so a pattern that works in one tool should not be assumed to work in another.

What happens to characters in Google Docs API insertions
Google’s Docs API documentation says that certain control characters in U+0000–U+0008 and U+000C–U+001F, along with BMP private-use characters in U+E000–U+F8FF, are stripped from inserted text under its structural insertion rules.
