On desktop Chrome, open More tools → Task Manager and sort by Memory to see which tabs, apps, or background pages are using the most. Start by closing tabs you are not using and disabling or removing unwanted extensions; if you want Chrome to deactivate eligible inactive tabs automatically, turn on Settings → Performance → Memory Saver. Save your work before ending a task: doing so can discard unsaved changes.
Find which Chrome task is using memory
- In desktop Chrome, select the three-dot More menu.
- Choose More tools → Task Manager.
- Select the Memory column heading to sort tasks by memory use. Look for tabs, apps, or entries marked Background page that you recognize and no longer need.
- If you decide to end a task, select it and choose End process. Save any work in that tab or app first; Google warns that ending a task loses unsaved work.
Chrome’s Task Manager is the practical first stop for identifying a browser task, but it does not establish a universal threshold for “too much” memory. Google’s consumer guidance provides steps to find and address resource use, not a typical RAM figure or guaranteed amount of savings. Google’s Speed up Google Chrome guide explains: “The more tabs you have open, the harder Chrome has to work.”
Reduce memory use with low-risk changes
- Close tabs you are not using. Reopen them when needed rather than keeping every page active.
- Disable or remove extensions you do not need. If you are unsure whether an extension is responsible, disable it first and see whether the issue changes before removing it.
- Avoid running several apps at once when the computer is under resource pressure.
These are among Google’s recommended basic steps. If one particular tab is consuming resources, deal with that tab rather than ending unfamiliar Chrome tasks indiscriminately.
Use Memory Saver to deactivate inactive tabs
Memory Saver deactivates eligible tabs you are not currently using. When you return to an inactive tab, Chrome reloads it. That can reclaim memory, but it also means a page’s current state may not be preserved; account for the reload if you are working with live page state.

- Open Chrome’s More menu and choose Settings.
- Select Performance.
- Turn on Memory Saver and choose a level.
Google lists three levels in its Chrome performance personalization guide. It gives no fixed deactivation interval or percentage of memory saved.
| Setting | When eligible inactive tabs are deactivated | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Moderate | After a longer period | Tabs stay active longer; memory reclamation is less immediate. |
| Balanced (recommended) | After an optimal period | Google’s recommended middle option between keeping tabs active and deactivating them. |
| Maximum | After a shorter period | Tabs are deactivated sooner to prioritize memory reclamation. |
Keep specific sites active
If a site should not be deactivated, add it to the Always keep these sites active list in Memory Saver settings. Chrome may also leave a tab active when it is playing audio or video, sharing a screen, showing notifications, downloading, holding a partially completed form, pinned, or connected to a device. These exceptions can explain why some background tabs remain active after you enable Memory Saver.

Check related settings and device scope
Chrome’s Settings → Performance page also includes Preload pages. Google describes preloading as a way to make browsing and searching faster, and notes that it can use cookies when permitted. Review the setting if that trade-off concerns you; Google’s guidance does not establish that turning it off will produce a specific memory reduction.
Memory Saver’s performance personalization controls are for computer Chrome. Google says these controls are not available on Chrome for iOS or Android, so the desktop menu steps above do not apply to mobile.

If Chrome still feels slow
For managed Windows Chrome
Google’s troubleshooting guidance for managed Windows accounts recommends noting when performance worsens, examining resource-heavy processes, and isolating problematic webpages or web apps. It describes slow disk access or insufficient system memory as possible reasons a main process can slow, and says a poorly programmed web app can increase renderer workload. This is an advanced route for managed Windows environments, not a diagnosis for every slow Chrome installation. Multiple Chrome processes in the operating system’s process list do not automatically mean there are multiple browsers or that each process is a problem.
Consider a settings reset only as a later step
Google also lists resetting Chrome settings to their defaults as a troubleshooting option. Treat that as a broader intervention, not the first response to one high-memory tab: review the reset’s effects and be prepared to restore your preferred settings afterward.
