You can find and install free-to-play games on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One through the console’s Store without subscribing to Game Pass. Open Store, search for a game or browse the free-to-play catalog, then select the Xbox console listing and use the free install option shown on its product page. Game Pass is separate; check each game’s listing for any requirements tied to online play or specific features.
Find free games in the Xbox Store
- Open Store from your Xbox home screen.
- Search or browse. Search for a game by name, or explore Store navigation and categories. Xbox recommends universal search and Store navigation for finding games. Xbox’s digital-games guidance explains these discovery options.
- Browse the free-to-play catalog. Xbox’s free-to-play games page covers Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One and provides genre categories including shooters, sports, racing and flying, role-playing, and kids and family. It is a changing catalog, not a permanent list.
Examples shown in the catalog when accessed on October 4, 2026, included Fortnite, Roblox – Xbox, Call of Duty: Warzone, Rocket League, and eFootball. The featured games and their availability can change over time and by region.

Check the listing, then install the game
- Open the game’s Store product page and confirm it is the Xbox console version. Similar names can refer to other products or platforms.
- Check that the listing identifies the game as free or free-to-play, then choose the free installation action displayed on that page. Button wording and layout may vary as the console interface changes.
- Let the download and installation finish. Digital games are downloaded to the console and use its storage. If the download cannot proceed because storage is low, free space and try again.
What “without Game Pass” means
Game Pass is not required simply to find and install a game listed as free-to-play in the Xbox catalog. Xbox presents these games separately from its Game Pass library, while also highlighting Game Pass benefits that may be offered within particular games. Installing a free-to-play game does not itself enroll you in Game Pass.

Do not assume that every game’s online multiplayer or optional features have identical requirements. The catalog information cited here does not establish a universal rule for online play. If a particular mode matters to you, check that game’s Store listing or current Xbox guidance for its requirements.

Xbox says a Microsoft Account and valid payment instrument are needed for a purchase. That purchase guidance does not establish that a payment method is required to download a free game.

- Genre and intended audience: Check the game’s description and content rating.
- Storage: Review the product information for the install size, if listed, and make sure the console has room.
- Modes and features: Confirm that the game includes the mode you want and check whether it has separate requirements, particularly for online play.
