Start with the wallet address and the blockchain network, not the app’s transaction screen. Copy the relevant public address, open that address in the network’s block explorer, and export the explorer’s file when the wallet has no native export. Then check the file against every address, chain, date range and transaction type you used. For tax or accounting, retain the raw history plus purchase, valuation, fee and cost-basis records; a wallet CSV alone is rarely a complete tax ledger.
What you need before exporting
A crypto wallet is an interface to one or more blockchain addresses. The same app can hold accounts on Ethereum, Base, Polygon, Bitcoin and other networks, but each address has separate on-chain activity. An export is complete only when it covers the right account and the right chain.

Identify the exact account and network
- Open the wallet and note the account name or account number.
- Copy the public address exactly as displayed. For an account that uses several chains, record the network selected when you view the activity.
- List every address you have used, including imported accounts, hardware-wallet accounts and older accounts that are no longer visible in the default view.
- Record the date range you need and whether you require ordinary transfers, token movements, swaps, contract interactions, staking activity, fees or all of them.
Do not confuse a wallet address with an exchange account. A self-custody address has public on-chain records; an exchange’s internal ledger may include trades and transfers that never appear as separate blockchain transactions.

A public address can be used to look up transactions, but it cannot authorize spending by itself. A Secret Recovery Phrase or private key can control the assets. MetaMask’s official guidance says: “Never share your Secret Recovery Phrase with any platform, service, or individual.” The warning appears in its transaction-history reporting guide. No legitimate history export should ask for a seed phrase, private key or wallet password.

The general export workflow
- Choose the wallet account. Confirm the account that actually received or sent the assets. If you used several accounts, plan a separate export for each.
- Choose the blockchain. Select the network on which the activity occurred. An Ethereum address and a Base address may look similar while having different histories.
- Copy only the public address. Use the wallet’s copy control rather than retyping a long hexadecimal address. Paste it into a note temporarily and check the first and last characters.
- Use the wallet’s supported route. Some wallets provide a native CSV; others send you to a block explorer or a tax-reporting integration. Follow the provider’s current instructions for your wallet and network.
- Set the explorer’s filters. Select the required date range and transaction categories. Review normal transactions, token transfers, internal transactions, NFT activity and contract calls when those categories are relevant to your records.
- Download the raw file. Keep the original filename and save a second, read-only copy. Do not edit the raw file before making any cleaned or categorized version.
- Validate coverage. Check the address, network, earliest and latest timestamps, transaction count, token symbols, fees and transaction hashes. Repeat the process for every address and chain.
- Add supporting records. Match transfers to exchange statements, wallet purchase records, fiat payments, invoices, staking statements and valuation data. A blockchain file generally proves activity, not what you paid or the value in your tax currency.
MetaMask: export through a block explorer
MetaMask’s current help article states that the wallet does not include a built-in CSV or PDF transaction-history export. Its documented method is to open the account in the appropriate network explorer and use that explorer’s export control. The article gives Etherscan and BaseScan as examples and notes that the interface can change, so labels may differ from the ones shown below.
Step-by-step
- Open MetaMask and select the account whose history you need.
- Switch to the network containing the transactions. Do not assume that an address’s Ethereum history also represents activity on Base or another chain.
- Open the account menu and choose the wallet’s View on or equivalent block-explorer link. This opens the address on the explorer associated with the selected network.
- Verify the explorer page shows the same public address. If it does not, stop and copy the address again from MetaMask.
- Use the explorer’s CSV export option. Depending on the explorer, you may need to open an account, token-transfer or transaction-download panel before the export control appears.
- Choose the date range and categories available to you, then download the CSV. Save the unmodified file with the network and address in the filename.
- Repeat for each network and MetaMask account you used.
MetaMask also describes importing a public account address into a trusted third-party tax tool to create CSV or PDF reports. That route can add categorization and valuation fields, but it is not a substitute for keeping the explorer’s raw file. Before connecting an address, review the provider’s security practices, network coverage and permissions. Never enter a Secret Recovery Phrase into the tax tool.
Coinbase Wallet and the current Base app
Coinbase’s wallet help material describes the current app experience as the Base app, while legacy instructions may still refer to Coinbase Wallet. The documented route is to expose a public address or extended public key (xPub) for use by supported tax software.
Exporting a public address or xPub
- Open the wallet app and go to Assets.
- Open Settings.
- Search for Export public addresses.
- Copy the public address or xPub for the account you need.
- Provide that information only to a tax or portfolio service you trust and that supports the relevant networks.
- Use the service’s export function to download its transaction report, then retain the original address-level history where available.
An xPub or public address does not give the recipient control of your assets, but it can reveal associated past and future activity. Share it only when you understand what the service will be able to see. Coinbase’s instructions also note that some networks may require another wallet provider, so an absent export option does not prove that the address has no transactions.

Which route should you use?
| Route | What it normally provides | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Block-explorer CSV | Raw on-chain transactions, timestamps, hashes, transfers and network fees, depending on the explorer | Usually does not establish purchase price, tax basis, fiat value or the purpose of a transaction |
| Wallet tax-software import | A categorized report, often with downloadable CSV or PDF output and optional valuation fields | Coverage, categorization and basis calculations depend on the provider, address list and supported networks |
| Wallet’s native export | Whatever the specific app includes in its current export format | Features and column names vary by wallet and app version; some wallets have no native export |
| Custodial-exchange tax center | Exchange account activity, gain/loss summaries, downloadable tax forms and custom reports | It generally does not include unrelated self-custody wallet activity |
There is no universally complete route. For each file, compare the network and every address, the date range, transaction categories, timestamps, hashes, fees, valuation fields and basis details. A tax-tool report can be easier to read, while the explorer CSV remains useful as an unmodified audit trail.
How to combine several wallets and chains
People often discover missing records because they export only the wallet’s default account or only one network. Build an address inventory before you reconcile anything.
Address inventory checklist
- Wallet name and account label
- Public address, or xPub where the wallet uses one
- Blockchain network
- Date the account was first used and the last date covered
- Whether the address was imported, archived or controlled by a hardware device
- Any exchange, payment service, decentralized application or bridge that sent assets to it
Export each address/network combination separately unless the wallet’s current report clearly documents that it aggregates them. Keep a manifest next to the files so you can see which combinations are complete. When two exports contain the same transfer, use the transaction hash, network and timestamp to identify the duplicate rather than deleting either raw file.

Transfers between your own addresses
A transfer from one wallet you control to another may appear as an outgoing transaction in one file and an incoming transaction in another. Reconcile those entries as one movement of assets, while retaining both records. Network fees can be charged separately from the token transfer, and a contract interaction may contain several token movements that a simple wallet screen displays as one action.

What a wallet export can—and cannot—prove
A raw history can document that an address interacted with a network at a particular time. Depending on the explorer, it may include transaction hashes, block timestamps, asset amounts, token contract addresses, network fees and transfer directions. It may not tell you who controlled the address, why the transaction occurred, what the asset was worth in your local currency, or what you originally paid.
For US federal tax records, the Internal Revenue Service says taxpayers must retain records documenting purchases, receipts, sales, exchanges and other dispositions. Its digital-assets guidance says the records needed to calculate gain or loss include the transaction date and time, asset type, number of units, fair market value and basis. Read the IRS guidance at IRS Digital assets. The IRS requirement is US guidance; other jurisdictions can require different information and retention periods.
Build a complete record for each taxable event
- Identity: wallet address, network and transaction hash.
- Timing: blockchain timestamp and, where relevant, the time-zone-adjusted date used in your records.
- Asset data: token name, contract address when applicable, units sent or received and network fee.
- Value: fair market value and the pricing source or exchange quote used.
- Basis: acquisition date, acquisition cost, previous wallet or exchange record and any allocation method.
- Context: purchase, sale, swap, gift, payment, staking reward, airdrop, bridge transfer or movement between your own accounts.
If a CSV lacks any of these fields, keep it anyway and add the missing evidence in a separate ledger. Do not overwrite the raw export to make it fit a tax template.

Wallet records and exchange reports are different datasets
A custodial exchange may offer a tax center with tax documents, gain/loss summaries and raw transaction history. Those reports describe activity inside that exchange account. Coinbase states that its Coinbase.com tax center excludes Coinbase Wallet activity. Anyone who used both must obtain both sets of records and reconcile transfers between them.

Understanding Form 1099-DA dates and scope
For US customers, Coinbase says its Form 1099-DA for the 2025 tax year reports qualifying sales or exchanges and shows gross proceeds, not net gains or the account balance. It says basis information begins with the 2026 tax year. The IRS describes broker gross-proceeds reporting for transactions from January 1, 2025, and basis reporting for certain transactions from January 1, 2026. These forms are broker statements for the activity in scope; they are not universal ledgers for self-custody addresses.
Do not label gross proceeds as profit or taxable gain. Compare the form with your own basis and wallet records, and follow the rules that apply to your tax jurisdiction.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Privacy and security checks before using a third-party importer
- Confirm the service’s identity, privacy policy, retention period and deletion controls.
- Understand whether it receives one address, an xPub, a complete wallet list or exchange credentials.
- Use read-only public information when the workflow supports it. A history importer should not need signing authority.
- Check that the service supports every network and token you used. An unsupported chain can create silent gaps.
- Review the imported addresses after connection. Remove old or unrelated addresses from the report if the tool permits it.
- Keep an offline or otherwise protected copy of the raw exports and your supporting purchase records.
Because public addresses and xPubs reveal transaction history, avoid posting them publicly alongside your name, email address or home information unless that exposure is acceptable. A public address is safer than a seed phrase, but it is not anonymous once linked to you.
Troubleshooting missing or incorrect records
The explorer shows no transactions
Check the selected network first. Then compare the first and last characters of the address in the wallet and explorer. A similar-looking address on another chain can produce an apparently empty page. If the wallet supports several accounts, switch accounts and repeat the check.
Best Value
The CSV is missing token activity
Look for separate tabs or export controls for token transfers, internal transactions, NFT transfers and contract interactions. Some explorers require a token-specific view. If the explorer does not expose the category, retain the visible transaction list and obtain the wallet provider’s current instructions for that network.
The tax report does not match the wallet
Compare the imported address list, chain list and date range. Check whether the report excludes spam tokens, failed transactions, bridges, staking rewards or network fees. Match entries by hash and timestamp, then add missing activity manually from the raw explorer files and supporting statements.
The wallet app was replaced or reset
Do not guess or enter recovery words into a website. Reinstall only from the provider’s official distribution channel and use the wallet’s documented recovery process locally. Once the account is restored, verify the public address before exporting. If you no longer control the account or its recovery material, an explorer can still show public history, but it cannot recover private records such as your acquisition cost.

A practical file-and-record system

Use filenames such as ethereum-0x1234-2024-01-01_to_2025-12-31-raw.csv, substituting the actual address fragment and dates. Keep a checksum or read-only copy if your recordkeeping policy requires evidence that the raw file was not changed.
Before filing a return or handing records to an accountant, confirm that every address in the manifest has an export, every exchange account has its own statement, and every material transaction has value and basis evidence. If the data cannot establish those facts, mark the gap and obtain the missing record instead of treating an incomplete CSV as a complete history.
