How to Find and Disable Unneeded Startup Apps in Windows

Find startup apps in Windows Settings or Task Manager, decide which you need at sign-in, and disable selected entries safely and reversibly.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To stop an app from launching automatically when you sign in to Windows, open Settings > Apps > Startup and switch it off. For more detail before changing anything, use Task Manager > Startup apps, where you can review the app’s startup-impact label. Disable only apps you understand and do not need right away; you can turn them back on if something you rely on stops working.

Choose Settings or Task Manager

Both built-in options let you control registered startup apps. Settings is the simpler on/off view; Task Manager adds startup-impact information to help you decide what to investigate first. Microsoft Support describes Task Manager as providing “a more detailed view, including the impact each app has on the startup process.”

Option Best for What it shows Limit
Settings > Apps > Startup Quickly switching a listed app on or off Registered startup apps and toggles Does not show Task Manager’s detailed impact view
Task Manager > Startup apps Reviewing impact while changing startup behavior Startup-app list, enable/disable control, and impact labels An impact label does not predict your total boot time or exact time saved

Review and disable apps carefully

  1. Open the startup list. In Windows 11, go to Settings > Apps > Startup. Alternatively, right-click Start, open Task Manager, and select Startup apps. Microsoft documents these paths for Windows 10 and Windows 11; interface wording can change with updates.
  2. Check each app’s purpose. Consider whether you need it to open immediately after sign-in—for example, because you use it every day or rely on its background function. A name alone is not enough to establish what an entry does.
  3. Prioritize investigation, not blind disabling. In Task Manager, use the startup-impact label as one clue about which entries may be worth reviewing. If you do not recognize an entry or are unsure what depends on it, leave it enabled until you understand its role.
  4. Switch off a selected app. In Settings, turn off its toggle. In Task Manager, select the app and choose Disable. This prevents automatic launch at sign-in; it does not uninstall the app.
  5. Check the result in your normal routine. Sign in again and confirm that the functions you care about still work. If you miss an app or a feature behaves unexpectedly, return to the same list and enable it.

What Task Manager’s startup-impact labels mean

Microsoft defines the labels using an app’s total CPU and disk usage during startup. They are indicators about that app’s measured startup activity, not a promise of how many seconds your whole computer will start faster if you disable it.

Label Microsoft’s documented threshold
Low impact Total CPU usage takes less than 300 milliseconds and total disk usage is less than 292 kilobytes.
Medium impact Total CPU usage takes more than 300 milliseconds but less than 1 second, or total disk usage is more than 292 kilobytes but less than 3 megabytes.
High impact Total CPU usage takes more than 1 second or total disk usage is more than 3 megabytes.
Not measured No measurement data is available for an enabled startup app.

These thresholds are Microsoft’s definitions; its support page does not state a publication year for them. A high-impact entry may be a reasonable candidate to investigate if you do not need it at sign-in, but keep your actual use and the app’s purpose in the decision.

If an app is missing from the list

The Settings and Task Manager lists are not the only ways programs can start. Microsoft documents Startup folders as another place to check when an app is not registered with a Windows startup task.

  1. Open File Explorer and inspect the per-user Startup folder for shortcuts that apply to your account.
  2. If the shortcut is not there, inspect the all-users Startup folder, which can contain shortcuts that apply to everyone using the PC.
  3. If you need to investigate more auto-start locations, use Microsoft Sysinternals Autoruns. It can show logon entries, services, Explorer extensions, and other locations. Its Hide Signed Microsoft Entries option can help narrow attention to third-party entries.

Autoruns is for broader, advanced inspection, not a reason to disable unfamiliar entries. In particular, do not indiscriminately turn off services or Microsoft components. If you cannot identify an item’s purpose, leave it unchanged while you investigate.

Will disabling startup apps make Windows faster?

It may reduce sign-in delay or background activity if an app you do not need was contributing to the problem. Microsoft identifies startup apps as one possible cause of slow performance, alongside factors such as storage, software, and hardware. The result depends on the particular computer and apps; Microsoft notes that older PCs may not see significant gains from the suggested steps. There is no general number of seconds or percentage improvement that applies to every device.

If the PC remains slow, startup cleanup may not address the main cause. Consider Microsoft’s other performance guidance rather than disabling more entries at random.

When clean boot is appropriate

A clean boot is a troubleshooting method for isolating startup apps or services that may be causing a problem. It is not the routine way to tidy the startup list. Microsoft warns that System Configuration is an advanced utility, that changing its options can make a computer unusable, and that clean boot may temporarily remove functionality. If you use it to troubleshoot, follow Microsoft’s clean-boot instructions, record the changes you make, and restore normal startup afterward.

Windows 10 support status

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says it no longer receives free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes from Microsoft. The startup controls described here may still be used on Windows 10, but managing startup apps does not replace supported software or security updates.
