In Gmail on a computer, search larger:10M to find messages over 10 MB. Add has:attachment when you only want messages with attached files, for example has:attachment larger:10M. Review the results, select only mail you no longer need, and click Delete. Gmail moves those messages to Trash; empty Trash (and Spam, if appropriate) when the goal is to reclaim Google Account storage. Google says storage totals after a large cleanup can take 48–72 hours to update.

Why large Gmail messages matter for storage
Google Account storage is shared by Gmail, Google Drive and Google Photos. Gmail messages and their attachments count toward that shared allowance, including messages still sitting in Spam or Trash. Deleting a message from the inbox therefore does not necessarily make space available immediately: it first moves the message to Trash, and items in Trash still count until they are permanently removed.

If an account is full, Google says Gmail may be unable to send or receive messages. Cleaning large mail is therefore useful both for routine housekeeping and for recovering from a full-account warning.
Choose the right Gmail search operator
Gmail lets you combine search operators so that the result set is narrow enough to inspect safely. The most useful operators for this task are:

The larger: and size: operators evaluate message size; has:attachment narrows the result to attached mail; filename: filters by attachment name or extension; and older_than: adds an age rule. Gmail also supports sender and date criteria, so you can add a trusted sender, a date range, or another filename term when the result set is still broad. How the size operators differ
Use larger: when you want a readable threshold such as megabytes. The query larger:10M is an easy first pass for messages over 10 MB. Use size: when a byte-level cutoff is important; Google’s operator documentation illustrates the form with size:1000000. These operators search the message’s size, so a result is not necessarily a single enormous attachment. It can include the message body and multiple attachments.
has:attachment answers a different question: whether the message contains an attachment. It does not set a size by itself, which is why it is commonly paired with larger: or size:. Likewise, filename:.pdf filters by attachment filename or extension, while the size operator supplies the 5 MB or 10 MB boundary. Combining the terms makes the intent explicit and reduces accidental matches.
Useful combinations for common cleanup jobs
Start broad only long enough to understand what is consuming space, then add a condition that reflects what you are allowed to delete:

Run each new query without selecting messages first. A typo, an unexpectedly broad sender condition, or a date boundary can change the result set substantially. Treat the result count as a prompt to inspect, not as permission to delete everything shown.

Find large emails in Gmail: the safe basic workflow
1. Open Gmail and run a size search
- Open Gmail in a desktop browser.
- Click the search field at the top of the page.
- Enter
larger:10Mand press Enter. - Wait for the result list, then scan the senders, subjects and dates before selecting anything.
This first search includes large messages whether or not they have attachments. If your objective is specifically to remove bulky files, rerun the search as has:attachment larger:10M. Google uses that query as its example for finding attachment mail over 10 MB; the example is a documented threshold, not a claim that every account should use 10 MB as its cutoff.

2. Narrow the result set before selecting
Deleting by size alone can catch an important contract, a family archive or a message you still need. Add a second or third condition that reflects your retention policy:
- Age:
older_than:2y has:attachment larger:10Mtargets mail older than two years. Change the number and unit only when that age rule fits your records. - File type:
filename:.pdf larger:5Mtargets PDFs above 5 MB, matching Google’s cleanup example. - Sender: add a sender condition when a newsletter, automated report or known file-transfer service is the source of repeated large mail. Confirm the sender in the results before deleting.
- Date: combine the size term with Gmail’s date criteria when you want a defined period rather than a relative age.
- Storage area: prepend
in:anywhereif you also need to locate large messages already in Spam or Trash.

3. Inspect conversations, not just the size number
Open any result that might be valuable. Check whether the message is part of a conversation, whether someone replied with a newer copy, and whether the attachment is the only copy of a document. Gmail’s size filter helps you locate candidates; it cannot determine whether a message is legally, financially or personally important.

If you need the attachment but not the conversation, download or move the file to an approved location before deleting the message, and verify that the saved copy opens correctly.
4. Select only the messages you have approved
Use the checkboxes beside the reviewed messages. If a result list spans multiple pages, do not assume that selecting the visible page selected every matching conversation; confirm what Gmail reports after each selection. Remove a checkmark from anything uncertain. A smaller, verified deletion is safer than a broad search followed by an irreversible cleanup.
5. Click Delete
Click the trash-can control labeled Delete. Gmail moves the selected messages to Trash rather than erasing them immediately. Google’s deletion instructions are at Delete messages in Gmail – Computer.
When to search Spam and Trash
A normal mailbox search may not show every message that is consuming space. Use in:anywhere when you need Gmail to include Spam and Trash, for example:

Empty Trash and Spam to reclaim space
Trash has a recovery window
Deleted Gmail messages remain recoverable in Trash for 30 days. During that period you can restore a message or permanently delete it yourself. After 30 days, Gmail permanently deletes it and it cannot be recovered through Trash. Emptying Trash early also makes the deletion permanent. Before emptying Trash, run in:trash larger:10M or open the Trash view and review the contents. Permanently remove only what you have confirmed you will never need. If you are still within the 30-day period and discover a mistake, restore the message before emptying the folder.
Spam and Trash still use storage
Because Gmail messages and attachments in Spam and Trash count toward shared Google Account storage, deleting inbox mail without clearing these folders may produce little immediate change. Review both folders, then use Gmail’s permanent-delete or empty-folder control only after checking for false positives and recoverable mail you still want.
How to verify that Gmail actually freed space
- Confirm that the intended messages are in Trash after clicking Delete.
- Review Spam and Trash for other large items with
in:anywhereor folder-specific searches. - Empty the folders only after your final review.
- Check the Google Account storage indicator again later rather than expecting an instant recalculation.
Google says a large cleanup can take 48–72 hours to be reflected accurately in storage totals. During that interval, continue to avoid deleting valuable mail merely because the displayed number has not changed. Storage is shared with Drive and Photos, so inspect those services as well if Gmail cleanup is complete but the account remains near its limit. Why your storage did not drop after deletion
The messages are still in Trash or Spam
Clicking Delete moves Gmail messages to Trash. Until Trash is emptied or the 30-day retention period ends, those messages and their attachments continue to count. Spam has the same storage implication. Search with in:anywhere, inspect both folders, and permanently remove only the items you no longer need.
Google is still processing a bulk cleanup
For many deleted files, allow up to 48–72 hours for the storage total to settle. A temporary unchanged total does not by itself prove that Gmail failed to delete the messages.
Drive or Photos are using the remaining space
Gmail is only one part of the shared quota. Large videos, device backups, photos or Drive files can keep the account full even after all unnecessary mail is gone. Check each service before deleting additional Gmail messages that you may need.

A search run in the regular mail view may not surface items in Spam or Trash. Add in:anywhere when the purpose is an account-wide Gmail search. Conversely, use a folder-specific view when you want to avoid touching recoverable or suspicious messages elsewhere.

The account is already over its limit
Google says a full account can prevent Gmail from sending or receiving messages. Prioritize verified cleanup in Gmail, Drive and Photos, then wait for the storage calculation to update. Buying additional storage is a fallback when cleanup cannot reduce usage enough; it is not required to search for or delete large Gmail messages.

Monthly review
Run has:attachment larger:10M, sort through the results by sender and date, and remove only obsolete files. If your work produces recurring reports, add the sender or a filename term so the review remains focused.
Quarterly age-based cleanup
Use a query such as older_than:2y has:attachment larger:10M to review old attachment mail. Treat the two-year period as a policy choice, not a universal deletion rule; regulated or archival records may require longer retention.

Key precautions before permanent deletion
- Do not treat a size threshold as a value judgment; a small message can be essential and a large message can be disposable.
- Check the sender, subject, date, conversation history and attachment before deleting.
- Preserve the only copy of a document in an approved location and verify the copy before removing the email.
- Remember that emptying Trash ends the normal Gmail recovery path immediately.
- Allow for the 48–72-hour storage recalculation window before concluding that cleanup failed.
