Use Twitch’s category directory to find streams that are live now; use a third-party channel search such as SullyGnome when you need to compare language and audience filters over a chosen historical period. Keep the time window and audience measure consistent: a live viewer count is a snapshot, while average viewers describe a selected period.
Find streams that are live now on Twitch
- Open Twitch Browse and Categories.
- Search for a category or browse the directory to choose one. Categories identify broad content areas; tags add detail within a category. Twitch says a streamer selects one category and can add multiple tags.
- Use the category-tag search to narrow results. For example, Twitch identifies “English” as a possible tag. Language filtering therefore depends on the stream having an appropriate tag.
- Sort the category’s streams by viewer count to see currently larger audiences, or use Twitch’s recommendation sort if you prefer its suggested ordering. The available controls and live counts may change with the interface.
Twitch documents sorting streams within a category by viewer count or by Twitch recommendations in its Browse and Search help. Its live directory displays category search and a “Search Category Tags” field.

Search by language and audience range over time
For a more controlled historical search, use SullyGnome’s channel search. Its filters include broadcast language, average-viewer ranges, follower ranges, channel activity or status, and streamed games. The site also offers selectable search periods, so check the chosen period before comparing results.

SullyGnome’s homepage presents multiple historical time ranges, and its summary page groups statistics for a recent period and includes a language view. These are third-party statistics, not official Twitch analytics. The cited pages do not establish SullyGnome’s data-collection methodology or independent accuracy validation, so treat its figures as estimates from that service rather than verified Twitch measurements.

Compare channels on like-for-like terms
Before comparing two channels, write down four choices: category or game, stream language, audience measure, and time window. Then apply the same choices to both channels.
- For a live comparison: compare current viewer counts from the same category directory at roughly the same time. A current count can change and is not a channel’s average audience.
- For a historical comparison: choose the same lookback period and compare average viewers with average viewers, not one channel’s average against another channel’s current live count.
- For finding smaller channels: use an average-viewer band when you mean concurrent audience size. Do not substitute follower count: SullyGnome exposes follower ranges and average viewers as separate filters.
- For language: use Twitch tags for live browsing or a broadcast-language filter in channel search, while allowing for streams that are not consistently labeled.
These workflows answer different questions: Twitch’s directory is for “who is live in this category now?”; a historical channel search is for “which channels fit this language and audience range over this period?”
