How to Find and Access WordPress Error Logs (Step-by-Step)

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

WordPress error logs can help you uncover what is happening behind the scenes when your site shows a white screen, breaks after an update, throws a 500 error, or behaves strangely without an obvious cause. Instead of guessing, these logs record warnings, fatal errors, deprecated code notices, and server-related issues that point you toward the plugin, theme, file, or configuration causing the problem.

This guide walks through how to enable WordPress debug logging with wp-config.php, where to find the debug.log file, and how to access related logs from your hosting control panel or server tools. You will also learn how to read common log entries and safely turn debugging off when you are done.

What Are WordPress Error Logs and When Should You Check Them?

WordPress error logs are records of problems that happen while your site is running. They can capture PHP warnings, fatal errors, database connection issues, deprecated function notices, plugin conflicts, theme problems, and server-side failures. Instead of showing every technical issue to visitors, WordPress and your hosting environment can write those details to a log file so you can review what went wrong behind the scenes.

The most common WordPress-specific log is the debug.log file, which is created when WordPress debugging is enabled in wp-config.php. Depending on your hosting setup, you may also have access to server error logs from Apache, Nginx, LiteSpeed, PHP-FPM, or your hosting control panel. These logs are especially useful because they often include the file path, line number, timestamp, and error type, helping you connect a visible issue on the site to the code or component causing it.

Common situations where error logs help

  • White screen of death: A fatal PHP error may stop WordPress from loading while the log shows the exact plugin, theme file, or function involved.
  • Plugin or theme crashes: If a feature breaks after an update, the log can point to incompatible code or a missing function.
  • 500 internal server errors: Server logs may reveal memory limits, permission problems, malformed .htaccess rules, or PHP execution failures.
  • Admin area problems: If wp-admin loads slowly, shows blank pages, or fails during updates, logs can expose PHP warnings, AJAX errors, or failed includes.
  • WooCommerce checkout failures: Logs can help trace payment gateway errors, email sending failures, or conflicts with checkout customization plugins.
  • Slow or unstable pages: Repeated warnings, database errors, or exhausted memory messages can explain performance issues that are not obvious in the browser.

You should check WordPress error logs whenever a problem is repeatable, difficult to see directly, or started after a specific change. For example, review logs after installing a new plugin, switching themes, updating PHP, migrating to a new host, editing custom code, or restoring a backup. Logs are also helpful when a visitor reports an issue you cannot reproduce, because timestamps can be matched against the time the problem occurred.

Error logs are diagnostic tools, not public reports. They may contain server paths, database table names, plugin names, usernames, IP addresses, API responses, or fragments of sensitive data. For that reason, logging should be enabled only when needed on production sites, reviewed promptly, and disabled or restricted afterward. In the next steps, you will enable WordPress debug logging safely, locate the generated file, and compare it with the error logs available from your hosting account.

How to Enable WordPress Debug Logging in wp-config.php

The most direct plugin-free way to turn on WordPress error logging is by editing the wp-config.php file in your site’s root directory. This file controls core WordPress settings, including database credentials and debugging options, so make a backup before changing it. You can access it through an FTP client such as FileZilla, your host’s File Manager, or SSH if your hosting account supports command-line access.

In most WordPress installations, wp-config.php is located in the same folder as wp-content, wp-admin, and wp-includes. Open the file and look for the line that says /* That's all, stop editing! Happy publishing. */. Debug settings should be added above that line. If your file already contains a WP_DEBUG setting, update the existing line instead of adding a duplicate.

Recommended debug logging settings

Add or update the following constants in wp-config.php:

define( 'WP_DEBUG', true );
define( 'WP_DEBUG_LOG', true );
define( 'WP_DEBUG_DISPLAY', false );
@ini_set( 'display_errors', 0 );

These settings tell WordPress to capture PHP errors, warnings, and notices in a log file without showing them to visitors on the front end of your site. This is the safest setup for troubleshooting on a live website because it records useful diagnostic information while keeping error details away from public pages.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • WP_DEBUG turns WordPress debugging on.
  • WP_DEBUG_LOG writes errors to a log file, usually wp-content/debug.log.
  • WP_DEBUG_DISPLAY controls whether errors appear in the browser.
  • display_errors asks PHP not to print errors on the page.

If you want to store the log somewhere other than the default location, newer WordPress versions allow a custom path for WP_DEBUG_LOG. For example, you can place the log outside the public web directory if your server structure allows it:

define( 'WP_DEBUG_LOG', '/home/accountname/private-logs/wp-debug.log' );

After saving the file, reload the page or repeat the action that caused the problem, such as submitting a form, updating a plugin, opening a broken admin screen, or triggering a checkout error. WordPress will only create or update the log when an error, warning, notice, or deprecated-code message occurs. If no log appears right away, test the affected feature again and confirm that the wp-content directory is writable by the server.

For temporary troubleshooting, you can also enable script debugging with SCRIPT_DEBUG, which tells WordPress to load unminified versions of core JavaScript and CSS files. This is mainly useful when diagnosing admin interface issues, editor problems, or script conflicts:

define( 'SCRIPT_DEBUG', true );

Once you have captured the errors you need, return to wp-config.php and turn debugging off. Leaving debug mode enabled for long periods can increase disk usage and may expose file paths, plugin names, theme details, or other sensitive information if logs are not properly protected.

Where to Find the WordPress debug.log File

After you enable WordPress debug logging in wp-config.php, WordPress writes PHP errors, warnings, notices, and deprecated function messages to a file named debug.log. In most standard setups, you can find it inside the wp-content directory of your WordPress installation:

/wp-content/debug.log

For example, if WordPress is installed in the main public directory of your hosting account, the full path may look like one of these:

  • /public_html/wp-content/debug.log
  • /home/username/public_html/wp-content/debug.log
  • /var/www/html/wp-content/debug.log
  • /htdocs/wp-content/debug.log

The exact path depends on your hosting provider, server setup, and whether WordPress is installed in the root domain, a subdirectory, or a staging environment. If your site is installed at example.com/blog, for instance, the file will usually be inside that installation’s own wp-content folder, such as /public_html/blog/wp-content/debug.log.

How to find debug.log with File Manager

The quickest way for many site owners is through the hosting file manager. Log in to your hosting dashboard, open File Manager, then navigate to the directory where WordPress is installed. Look for familiar WordPress folders such as wp-admin, wp-content, and wp-includes. Open wp-content and search for debug.log.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you do not see the file, refresh the folder after reproducing the issue on your site. WordPress may not create debug.log until an error is actually recorded. Also confirm that logging is enabled with settings similar to define( 'WP_DEBUG', true ); and define( 'WP_DEBUG_LOG', true ); in wp-config.php.

How to find debug.log with FTP or SFTP

You can also use an FTP or SFTP client such as FileZilla, Cyberduck, or Transmit. Connect to your server with the credentials from your host, then open your WordPress root directory. From there, go to wp-content and download or open debug.log. SFTP is preferable because it encrypts the connection between your computer and the server.

If you manage mulle WordPress installations, check that you are viewing the correct site directory. A common mistake is opening the wp-content folder for a live site when the error is happening on a staging site, or checking the root domain when WordPress is installed in a subfolder.

If the debug.log file is missing

A missing debug.log file usually means one of four things: no errors have been logged yet, debug logging is not enabled correctly, WordPress cannot write to the wp-content directory, or your host redirects logs to another location. File permissions can also prevent the file from being created. The wp-content folder generally needs to be writable by the web server user, but permissions should not be loosened more than necessary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Visit the page that triggers the error, then check wp-content again.
  • Confirm the debug constants are placed above the line that says /* That’s all, stop editing! Happy publishing. */.
  • Check for a custom log path if WP_DEBUG_LOG was set to a specific file location.
  • Ask your host whether PHP errors are written to a server-level log instead.

Once you find debug.log, avoid leaving it publicly accessible. It can contain file paths, plugin names, database-related messages, email addresses, or other sensitive details that should not be exposed to visitors or search engines.

How to Access Error Logs Through Your Hosting Control Panel

If you cannot find a WordPress debug.log file, or you want to check errors generated at the server level, your hosting control panel is often the next best place to look. These logs can show PHP fatal errors, memory limit issues, permission problems, failed cron jobs, and web server errors that may not appear inside the WordPress debug log.

The exact location depends on your hosting provider and control panel, but the process is usually similar: sign in to your hosting account, open the site’s management area, and look for a section named Logs, Errors, Error Log, Raw Access Logs, or Metrics. If you manage more than one domain, make sure you select the correct website before opening the logs.

Accessing error logs in cPanel

  1. Log in to your hosting account and open cPanel.
  2. Scroll to the Metrics section.
  3. Click Errors to view recent server errors for your account.
  4. For downloadable logs, look for Raw Access, Awstats, or a dedicated Error Log option if your host provides one.

cPanel’s Errors page usually shows recent entries only, so it is useful for checking problems that just happened. For example, if your site shows a 500 error after activating a plugin, refresh the broken page once, then immediately check this screen for new PHP or server messages.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Accessing logs in managed WordPress hosting dashboards

Managed WordPress hosts often provide a custom dashboard instead of standard cPanel. Look inside the individual site dashboard for tabs such as Tools, Logs, Monitoring, or Advanced. Many hosts separate log types, so you may see options like PHP error log, Nginx error log, Apache error log, and Access log.

  • PHP error logs: Best for plugin, theme, and PHP version compatibility errors.
  • Web server error logs: Useful for 500 errors, rewrite rule issues, blocked requests, and server configuration problems.
  • Access logs: Show requests to your site, including URLs, status codes, IP addresses, and user agents.

Some dashboards let you filter logs by date, severity, or search term. Try searching for the plugin folder name, theme folder name, the affected URL, or phrases such as fatal error, permission denied, memory exhausted, or failed to open stream. If the dashboard includes a download button, save the file locally before making changes so you can compare errors before and after troubleshooting.

Accessing logs through file manager or SFTP

Some hosts store logs as files inside your hosting account. Open the hosting File Manager or connect with SFTP, then look for folders named logs, log, statistics, or a domain-specific directory. Common filenames include error_log, php_errorlog, apache_error.log, or nginx_error.log. Depending on the server setup, these files may sit above your public web root rather than inside public_html.

If you do not see server logs in your dashboard, check your host’s documentation or contact support and ask for the PHP and web server error log path for your domain. Avoid moving, renaming, or deleting log files unless your host specifically instructs you to do so, because some platforms rely on fixed log locations for monitoring and diagnostics.

How to Read and Understand Common WordPress Error Log Messages

After you open your WordPress error log, the entries may look intimidating, but most follow a predictable pattern. A typical line includes a date and time, the error level, a short message, and the file path where the problem occurred. For example, you may see a message pointing to a plugin file inside /wp-content/plugins/, a theme file inside /wp-content/themes/, or a core WordPress file inside /wp-includes/. Start by reading the error from left to right, then focus on the file path and line number, because those details usually tell you which plugin, theme, or custom snippet triggered the issue.

WordPress logs often include several entries from the same request, so do not assume every line is a separate problem. Look for repeated messages with the same file path, line number, or function name. If an error appears immediately after activating a plugin, switching themes, updating PHP, or editing code, that recent change is often the best place to start troubleshooting. Also compare the timestamp in the log with the time the site error occurred, especially if you are investigating a white screen, checkout failure, form issue, or admin dashboard crash.

Common WordPress error types

Error type What it usually means Common next step
PHP Fatal error A script stopped completely, often due to a missing function, incompatible plugin, memory limit, or code conflict. Disable the plugin or theme named in the file path, then test again.
PHP Warning Something went wrong, but PHP continued running. This may still break layouts, forms, or background tasks. Check whether the warning repeats often or matches the broken feature.
PHP Notice A minor coding issue, such as an undefined variable or array key. Monitor it, but prioritize fatal errors and repeated warnings first.
Deprecated Code is using an older PHP or WordPress feature that may stop working in a future version. Update the related plugin, theme, or custom code.
Database error A query failed, a table is missing, or the database connection had a problem. Check the query message, database credentials, and any plugin mentioned nearby.

File paths are one of the fastest ways to narrow down the source. If the path includes wp-content/plugins/contact-form-example/, the issue is likely related to that plugin. If it includes your active theme folder, such as wp-content/themes/my-theme/, check recent theme edits, template overrides, or theme updates. If the path points to wp-includes or wp-admin, do not edit WordPress core files directly. Core files are often only where the error surfaced, while the actual trigger may be a plugin or theme function shown earlier in the same stack trace.

Some messages include a stack trace, which is a list of function calls that led to the error. Read it from the first line that mentions your plugin, theme, or custom code rather than focusing only on the final WordPress core file. For practical troubleshooting, copy the exact error message, remove private paths or domain details if needed, and search the plugin developer’s documentation, support forum, or changelog. Once you identify a likely source, update the component, temporarily disable it, switch to a default theme, increase the PHP memory limit if the message mentions memory exhaustion, or contact your host when the log points to server-level limits or permissions.

How to Disable Debug Mode and Secure Your Error Logs

After you finish troubleshooting, turn off WordPress debug mode so errors are no longer written to a public-facing log file or displayed to visitors. Debug logs can include file paths, plugin names, database table references, API responses, user-related data, and other details that are useful during development but risky on a live site. Leaving logging enabled indefinitely can also create very large files that waste disk space and make future troubleshooting harder.

To disable WordPress debug logging, open your site’s wp-config.php file using SFTP, SSH, or your hosting file manager. Look for the debug constants you added earlier and change them so debugging is off. In most production sites, the settings should look like this:

define( 'WP_DEBUG', false );
define( 'WP_DEBUG_LOG', false );
define( 'WP_DEBUG_DISPLAY', false );

If your file already contains a line for WP_DEBUG, edit the existing line instead of adding a duplicate. WordPress reads these constants from wp-config.php, and duplicate definitions can cause confusion or PHP warnings. Save the file, then reload your site in a private browser window to confirm that no warnings, notices, or errors are displayed on the front end.

Remove or protect existing log files

Disabling debug mode stops new WordPress debug entries from being written, but it does not automatically delete the existing debug.log file. If the file is stored in wp-content/debug.log, download a copy first if you still need it for support or documentation. Then delete it from the server, or move it outside the public web directory if your host allows that. A log file left in a web-accessible folder may be reachable by anyone who knows or guesses the URL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Delete old logs: Remove debug.log and any exported server logs you no longer need.
  • Restrict access: Use hosting tools, file permissions, or server rules to block direct browser access to log files.
  • Avoid sharing full logs publicly: Redact domain paths, usernames, email addresses, license keys, tokens, and IP addresses before posting excerpts in forums or tickets.
  • Check backups: If your backups include wp-content, old debug logs may also exist inside backup archives.

On Apache servers, you can block browser access to debug.log with an .htaccess rule in the wp-content directory. On Nginx, the equivalent restriction must be added to the site’s server configuration, often by your hosting provider. Managed WordPress hosts may already prevent direct access to common log files, but you should still verify this by trying to open the log URL in a browser after you are done troubleshooting.

Finally, review file permissions. A typical file permission for wp-config.php is 400, 440, or 600, depending on the server setup. Log files should not be writable by every system user. If you are unsure which permissions are safe for your hosting environment, use your host’s recommended defaults rather than applying broad permissions such as 777. Keeping debug mode off, deleting unneeded logs, and limiting access to retained logs helps you troubleshoot without exposing sensitive site information.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe to leave WordPress debug logging turned on?

No, you should only leave debug logging on while you are actively troubleshooting. Error logs can include file paths, plugin names, database details, or other information that could help attackers if exposed. After fixing the issue, set debugging back to false and remove or protect any public log files.

Where is the WordPress debug.log file located?

By default, WordPress writes the debug log to the /wp-content/debug.log file when debug logging is enabled in wp-config.php. You can access it with FTP, SFTP, your hosting file manager, or a command-line tool if your host provides SSH access. If the file is not there, confirm that WP_DEBUG and WP_DEBUG_LOG are enabled and that WordPress has permission to write to the wp-content folder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if debug.log is empty even though my site has problems?

First, check that the debug constants in wp-config.php are placed above the line that says “That’s all, stop editing!” and that they are not duplicated elsewhere. Then reproduce the error by visiting the broken page, submitting the form, or running the action that triggers the issue. If the file is still empty, check your hosting control panel’s PHP error logs because some servers route errors there instead.

How can I tell which plugin or theme is causing an error?

Look for log entries that mention a path inside /wp-content/plugins/ or /wp-content/themes/. The folder name after that usually points to the plugin or theme involved, such as /wp-content/plugins/example-plugin/. If the same plugin or theme appears repeatedly near fatal errors or warnings, temporarily disable it or update it, then test again.

Can visitors see my WordPress error logs?

They might be able to if the log file is stored in a publicly accessible location such as /wp-content/debug.log and your server does not block direct access. Try opening the file URL in a private browser window to test it, then delete the file or protect it with server rules if it loads. For better security, use your host’s private server logs or configure logging to a non-public directory when possible.

Bottom Line

WordPress error logs are one of the fastest ways to move from guessing to targeted troubleshooting. Whether you enable debugging in wp-config.php, check your hosting control panel, or review server-level logs, the goal is the same: identify the exact error, trace its source, and fix the underlying issue safely.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

As a next step, turn on logging only when you need it, review the latest entries, and disable public debugging once you’re done. If the errors point to a theme, plugin, PHP version, or server configuration problem, you’ll have the details needed to resolve it or share with your developer or hosting support team.
