How to Find a Windows Installer on Your PC, Disc, or USB Drive

Learn where to look for a downloaded setup file, how to run Windows setup from USB or DVD, and how to create official installation media.

“Windows installer” can mean a downloaded program setup file, Windows setup files on installation media, or an app that is already installed. Start by identifying which one you need: a program installer is usually a file to locate; Windows installation media is a USB drive, DVD, or ISO; and an installed app is launched from Windows rather than from its original installer.

Find a downloaded program installer

  1. Open File Explorer and check Downloads if that is where you saved the file.

  2. If it is not there, search the folder where you may have saved it, or search from This PC for a broader search. Try the program name or a likely filename such as setup.

  3. Before opening a result, check that it came from the publisher you expected. Finding a file with a setup-like name does not establish that it is trustworthy.

Microsoft’s file-finding guidance covers searching likely folders and searching from This PC: Find your files and apps in Windows.

Find a program installer on a disc

Insert the disc, open it in File Explorer if it does not start automatically, and look for Setup.exe or Install.exe. Microsoft notes that installation programs on a disc commonly use one of those names. What happens when you insert a disc or removable device can depend on AutoPlay settings. See Microsoft’s instructions for installing programs from a disc.

Check whether the app is already installed

If your goal is to open an app rather than reinstall it, search for its name from Start or Windows Search. You can also check the Installed apps page in Settings. Microsoft explains how to check whether an app or program is installed. The installed app is separate from the setup file originally used to install it; that file may no longer be on the PC.

Run Windows setup from a USB drive or DVD

If you already have Windows installation media and Windows starts, connect the USB drive or insert the DVD, open it in File Explorer, and run setup.exe from the root of the media. Follow the prompts and review the choices about what to keep before proceeding. Microsoft describes this route for reinstalling Windows from installation media and for installing Windows 11 when no automatic prompt appears: Reinstall Windows with the installation media and Ways to install Windows 11.

In-place setup or clean installation?

  • In-place setup: Start setup.exe while signed in to Windows. Setup presents choices about what to keep, depending on the available options and installation path.

  • Clean installation: Start the PC from bootable installation media and install Windows as a fresh copy. Microsoft warns that this removes personal files, apps, manufacturer customizations, and settings. Back up important files before proceeding.

Create Windows installation media if you do not have it

Get the media creation instructions from Microsoft’s official Create installation media for Windows page and choose the route for your Windows version. Microsoft provides media-creation guidance for Windows 11 and Windows 10. Its page specifies a blank USB flash drive with at least 8 GB for creating USB media and warns that the drive’s contents will be deleted. Copy anything you need from that drive before using it.

An ISO is another option: Microsoft describes using one for a virtual machine or to make a DVD. You do not need to create USB media if an ISO better fits your setup.

Choose the right route for your situation

Your situation What to do
Windows starts and you want to repair or reinstall it Open setup.exe from the installation media in File Explorer, then review the available keep options.
The PC will not start, or you want a fresh installation Use bootable installation media. Back up important files first because a clean installation removes files, apps, customizations, and settings.
You do not have Windows installation media Use Microsoft’s official media creation instructions and choose USB or ISO for your device and intended use.
You need to resolve activation or product-key questions Check Microsoft’s guidance on finding your Windows product key. Finding setup files and activating Windows are separate tasks.

Windows activation is separate from locating setup

Some Windows installations use a digital license and do not require you to enter a product key manually. Some newer devices have a key embedded in firmware that can be applied automatically when it matches the Windows version and edition. Where a product key was supplied depends on how Windows was acquired; consult Microsoft’s product-key guidance for the relevant purchase route.

Windows 10 support status

Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. After that date, standard free software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes are no longer provided. Microsoft’s installation-media page includes its current Windows 10 and Windows 11 media guidance; check that page for the applicable download and support information.
