When the player is online, join the dedicated server with them, press F2, and copy the complete Platform User ID shown beside their character name. Keep the platform prefix, underscores, and capitalization exactly as displayed. If the player is offline, search the dedicated-server log for that character’s connection entry and read the Platform ID there.

What a Valheim player ID is
Valheim’s dedicated-server administration files use a Platform User ID rather than only a visible character name. Iron Gate Studio defines the value as [Platform]_[User ID] and specifies that it is case sensitive. The prefix is part of the identifier; removing it or changing capitalization can make an otherwise correct-looking entry unusable.

Use the character name only to locate the right person in the player panel or log. Copy the identifier itself, including every letter, number, separator, and platform prefix. Do not shorten it to a numeric portion or convert it to a different account identifier.
Method 1: Find the ID while the player is connected
The F2 panel is the quickest and most direct method when the target player is currently on your server.

- Have the target player join the Valheim dedicated server.
- Join the same server and remain connected while the player is present.
- Press F2 to open the in-game player panel.
- In the Players section, locate the player by their character name.
- Read the Platform User ID displayed beside that name.
- Copy the entire value exactly, including the platform prefix and capitalization.
Iron Gate’s documentation describes this value as following the format [Platform]_[User ID] and notes that it is case sensitive. Treat the copied text as an exact value: do not add spaces, remove characters, alter letter case, or omit the text before the underscore.
Check that you selected the right player
Use the character name as the visual check before copying. If two players use similar names, confirm the entry with the person who is connected before saving an administrative change. The name helps you identify the row; the Platform User ID is what belongs in the server file.
Method 2: Find the ID from the server log when the player is offline
If the player has already left, the server log is the fallback. Iron Gate states that the Platform User ID can be obtained from the server log. Current hosting documentation describes the practical workflow:

- Open the dedicated-server log using the console or file access provided by your host.
- Search for the player’s character name.
- Find the connection entry associated with that name.
- Read the local Platform ID shown near that connection entry.
- Copy the complete value exactly as logged, preserving its prefix and capitalization.
Search by the character name first because that is the identifying text you know. A player may have multiple connection entries, so use the entry that corresponds to the session you are managing rather than copying an unrelated line. If the log contains more than one similarly named character, confirm the session context before editing an administrative file.
Which lookup method should you use?

Use the F2 panel when possible because the player’s name and ID appear together in the live player list. Use the log when the player is unavailable or when you administer the server without joining the game.
Where to put the ID
After copying the Platform User ID, place one ID per line in the file that matches the action you want to take:

Do not combine several IDs on one line. Keep the platform prefix and capitalization from the F2 panel or log. If you are editing an existing file, preserve the other entries and add the new value on a separate line.
Default locations of the server files
Iron Gate lists these default save locations for Valheim dedicated-server data:

These are defaults, not guarantees. A server started with the -savedir [PATH] option writes its data to the location specified by that option instead. If the expected files are not in the default directory, check the server’s startup configuration for -savedir and use that path.

Editing safely
- Stop making changes while you are still copying the ID; first verify the complete value in the F2 panel or log.
- Open the file that corresponds to the intended action, rather than placing an administrator ID in the ban or allowlist file.
- Use one complete ID per line and leave existing entries intact.
- Save the file in the server’s actual save directory, especially if
-savedirhas been configured. - Keep a backup of the file before replacing or deleting entries so an accidental edit can be reversed.
Using the in-game administrator console
Iron Gate lists these dedicated-server administration commands:

The in-game administrator console opens with F5. These commands use the player name at the time you run them; the ID-lookup procedure is for obtaining the stable Platform User ID needed by the list files. If you are maintaining a permanent list, verify the ID before editing the corresponding file rather than relying on a name alone.

permittedlist.txt is not merely an additional list of preferred players. Iron Gate states that adding a person to this file restricts access to the listed users and “will ban everyone else from the server.” Confirm every intended user’s Platform User ID before enabling this arrangement. A missing or mistyped entry can prevent that person from joining, while an incomplete list can exclude everyone who is not listed.
Troubleshooting an ID lookup
The player does not appear in the F2 panel
- Confirm that the target player has joined the same dedicated server, not a different world or session.
- Open the panel after the player is connected and check the Players section.
- Use the character name shown in the panel to distinguish the intended player from other connected users.
- If the player has already disconnected, switch to the server-log method.
The copied value looks incomplete
Compare the text with the displayed format [Platform]_[User ID]. The platform prefix and underscore are part of the value. Copy from the beginning of the prefix through the final character, and preserve capitalization exactly.
The ID is not in the expected default folder
Check whether the server was launched with -savedir [PATH]. That option overrides the default Windows or Linux location, so the list files and related server data may be elsewhere.
You need an offline player’s ID but cannot find it in the log
Search the log using the player’s character name, then inspect nearby connection lines for the local Platform ID. If there are several matching entries, identify the connection associated with the player you are administering before copying a value.

A list entry does not work
- Check that the ID is in the correct file:

A reliable administrator workflow
- Decide whether the player is online. Use the F2 panel for a connected player; use the log for an offline player.
- Identify the player by character name.
- Copy the complete Platform User ID exactly as displayed or logged.
- Choose the file that matches the action: administrator, ban, or allowlist.
- Open the file in the active save directory and add one ID per line.
- Review the prefix, capitalization, and line placement before saving.
- If you are changing
permittedlist.txt, verify the complete set of users because everyone else is barred according to Iron Gate’s warning.
