How to Find a Lost Galaxy SmartTag and Make It Ring

Select your registered SmartTag in SmartThings, open its map, then use Search Nearby and Ring when it is close. Learn what offline finding can—and cannot—show.

Open SmartThings on the Galaxy phone signed in to the Samsung account used to register the tag. Select the registered SmartTag from All devices, open its map or location view, then use Search Nearby to home in on it. When it is close enough, tap Ring or Ring Your Tag. If it is beyond Bluetooth range, check its location in SmartThings Find; an offline location depends on nearby participating Galaxy devices and may not be current.

Find the tag and make it ring

  1. Open SmartThings. Use a Galaxy device signed in to the Samsung account that was used to register the SmartTag.
  2. Select the registered tag. Open the app menu, choose All devices, and tap the SmartTag you are looking for.
  3. Open its map or location view. Depending on the app version and region, Samsung’s instructions may show Go to map or a route through SmartThings Find. Choose the option that opens the selected tag’s location.
  4. Use Search Nearby if the map suggests it is close. Follow the on-screen signal to narrow down where it is.
  5. Tap Ring when it is within useful range. Listen for the tag and follow the sound. Samsung calls this SmartTag2 feature “Ring Your Tag.”

What to do if the tag is out of Bluetooth range

Check SmartThings Find for its reported location. With offline finding enabled, nearby Galaxy devices can detect the tag’s Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) signal and relay its location. This network-assisted feature is not a continuous live GPS feed: the map can be stale or show no location if participating devices have not detected the tag. A map pin can help guide a search, but it does not mean the tag can ring from any distance.

Why the location may not update

  • The tag’s battery may be depleted. Check its battery status in SmartThings. Samsung’s US support guidance identifies a completely discharged battery as one reason a tag’s location may not update.
  • No participating Galaxy devices may be nearby. Offline finding needs other Galaxy devices with the feature enabled to detect and relay the tag’s signal.
  • The tag may be outside direct Bluetooth range. Samsung lists a maximum BLE connection range of 120 metres for SmartTag2. That is a manufacturer maximum, not a guaranteed distance; obstacles and local conditions can reduce range or accuracy.

Samsung’s US support guide says the SmartTags it covers use CR2032 batteries. Confirm your tag generation and its battery guidance before replacing a cell; do not assume every model has identical battery requirements.

Which SmartTag features depend on the model and phone?

The basic recovery flow is to select the registered tag, view its location, and ring it when nearby. Some additional finding features are model- and device-dependent:

  • SmartTag+ AR finding: Samsung’s US support guide describes UWB and Android compatibility limits, and circumstances in which augmented-reality finding may not work. Do not assume AR finding is available on every SmartTag or Galaxy phone.

Before relying on a replacement tag

A replacement tracker can help with belongings only after it has been registered and attached to them. A new SmartTag cannot locate an item that was lost before the tag was attached. Check the exact model’s phone compatibility, finding features, and battery guidance for your region before relying on a particular feature.
