Treat every returned name as a candidate: compare its distinctive glyphs at the same size and weight, then check the license for the way you will use the font. Clean image preparation usually matters more than trying dozens of databases.
1. Prepare a screenshot that a font finder can read
Automatic matching works from the shapes of individual letters. A busy screenshot, tiny type or several unrelated fonts gives the detector too little consistent information. Start by making a new crop rather than uploading the entire screen.
Make one clean crop
- Open the image in an editor such as Preview, Photos, Photoshop or an online crop tool.
- Keep one typeface and one horizontal line of text. A heading, button label or short sentence is usually better than a paragraph containing multiple styles.
- Crop tightly enough to remove surrounding artwork, but leave the complete tops and bottoms of every character.
- Use the largest, sharpest version available. MyFonts recommends consistent letter size, separated characters, horizontal text and a file smaller than 2 MB; it warns that pixelated or poor-quality images produce less relevant results.
- Save a JPG, JPEG or PNG. If the letters are white on a dark background, keep that contrast rather than applying a blur or heavy filter.
Do not sharpen until halos appear around the letters, and do not stretch the crop disproportionately. Those changes alter the outlines that the matcher is trying to recognize. If the screenshot is very small, locate an original design export or a higher-resolution capture first.
2. Try WhatTheFont first
WhatTheFont is the quickest general-purpose check for a screenshot. Its uploader accepts JPG, JPEG and PNG files, detects text in the image and returns candidate matches from the MyFonts catalog.

- Open the WhatTheFont upload page.
- Choose the prepared image or drag it into the upload area.
- When the service draws a selection around the lettering, adjust the box so it contains one line and no neighboring text.
- Submit the crop and review the returned families. Open several candidates rather than selecting the first result.
A candidate is not proof that the original designer used that exact file. The screenshot may have a different weight, optical size, letter spacing, antialiasing or a custom modification. Download or preview the leading candidates and compare the same words from your screenshot.
3. Check the result with Adobe Fonts visual search
Adobe Fonts offers a second image search, especially useful when you already work in Creative Cloud. The workflow is deliberately line-based:
- Open Adobe Fonts and select the camera icon for visual search.
- Upload the screenshot crop.
- Select a single line of text and choose Next Step.
- Correct the sample text if Adobe misread a character, then inspect the suggested families and styles.
Compare Adobe’s suggestions with WhatTheFont’s. Agreement is useful evidence, but it still does not establish identity. Catalog coverage differs, and a typeface can look different after rasterization or compression.
4. Desktop options when you are already designing
Photoshop Match Font
Photoshop’s Match Font command compares selected image lettering with similar licensed fonts. Open the image, make a rectangular selection around one line, then use the Match Font command from Photoshop’s type tools. Preview candidates in the document so you can compare size and weight directly.

Illustrator Retype
Illustrator’s Retype feature can search Adobe Fonts or fonts installed on your computer. It is useful for rasterized text and for outlined lettering when you need to continue editing inside Illustrator. Select the lettering, run Retype, and review the matches in the contextual controls.
These desktop tools are convenient because the suggested font can be applied in the same project. They do not change the central rule: a visual match is a starting point, not a certificate that the screenshot used that family.
5. Compare candidates by the glyphs that reveal a typeface
Names and thumbnail previews can be misleading. Put the same sample words from the screenshot into a test line, set the candidate to an equivalent size and weight, and compare outlines at 100% zoom.

| Proportions | x-height, character width, cap height, ascenders and descenders. |
| Stroke contrast | Difference between thick and thin strokes, especially in serif and high-contrast display faces. |
Also compare spacing. A family can be correct while the screenshot uses a condensed width, a separate optical size or unusual tracking. If every glyph is close but one letter is consistently wrong, look for a related family or a customized logo rather than forcing the result.

6. Decide whether the match is good enough
For a quick design recreation
Choose the candidate whose distinctive letters, proportions and weight agree across several words. Record the family name, style (such as italic or roman), weight and any width or optical-size designation. If the lettering is a logo, expect that it may have been manually altered; recreate the visible shapes instead of assuming a standard font will be exact.
For production typography
Obtain the font from its foundry or an authorized distributor, then test it in the actual medium. Browser rendering, operating-system antialiasing and export settings can change the appearance. Keep the screenshot beside your test at the final display size, not only at a large zoom.
7. Check the license before using the font
Font identification and font permission are separate tasks. MyFonts notes that desktop or static-image use can require a different license from web or app embedding.
- Static graphics: verify that the license covers the posters, thumbnails, social images or other exported artwork you will distribute.
- Websites: check whether webfont hosting or embedding is permitted and whether the license limits domains, traffic or seats.
- Apps and games: look for an app or software-embedding license; a desktop license alone may not cover bundling the font file.
- Client work: confirm who must purchase the license and retain the receipt and exact style/weight details.
Do not assume that a visually identical free download is legally interchangeable with the identified family. Confirm the foundry, version, style and permitted uses from the current license terms.

8. Troubleshooting poor or ambiguous matches
The service cannot detect text
- Crop to one line and remove icons, borders and background texture.
- Upscale from an original source rather than a compressed messaging-app copy.
- Try a different line containing distinctive letters and numerals.
- For outlined or heavily distorted lettering, use Photoshop Match Font or Illustrator Retype and compare manually.
The suggestions all look wrong
- Check that the crop is horizontal and that characters are not touching.
- Correct the detected text in Adobe Fonts before searching again.
- Test both a heading and a body-text line; one may contain clearer glyphs.
- Consider that the lettering is hand-drawn, modified, variable-font output or unavailable in the catalog.
The weight or width is wrong
Search the same family’s semibold, bold, condensed, expanded and optical-size variants. Match stroke thickness and character width separately; selecting a heavier family merely because its thumbnail looks darker can produce incorrect proportions.
The screenshot is blocked by a consent dialog or popup
Close the dialog and capture the page again if possible. If you are generating a fresh page capture for analysis, a service that removes overlays before capture can save cleanup time.

10. A repeatable identification checklist
- Find the highest-resolution source and crop one horizontal line.
- Keep the file under 2 MB with separated, legible characters.
- Run WhatTheFont and record several candidates.
- Run Adobe Fonts visual search and correct its sample text.
- Use Photoshop Match Font or Illustrator Retype when those applications are already open.
- Compare “a”, “g”, numerals, punctuation, terminals, proportions and stroke contrast at matching size and weight.
- Record the exact family, style, weight and width that best fits.
- Confirm the license for static images, websites, apps or client work before distributing the result.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a font finder identify a font from a logo?
It can suggest related families, but logos are often customized, outlined or hand-drawn. Treat the result as a starting point and compare individual letter shapes.
Why do two tools return different font names?
WhatTheFont and Adobe Fonts search different catalogs and interpret rasterized lettering differently. Compare their glyph evidence rather than assuming either first result is definitive.
