Search the restaurant’s exact name with its former city or neighborhood and words such as “moved” or “new location.” If you find a possible new address or contact number, verify it through a recent, business-controlled source before traveling or relying on it. A third-party “closed” label is a useful lead, not proof that the restaurant has no successor location.
Start with the restaurant’s exact name and former location
Search the name as it appeared at the old address, together with the city or neighborhood. The former location helps distinguish the restaurant from businesses with similar names and can surface old listings or announcements that no longer appear in a broad search.

Try a few focused searches rather than relying on one query. For example:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsrestaurant name + former cityrestaurant name + former neighborhood + movedrestaurant name + new locationrestaurant name + relocatedrestaurant name + closed + contact
These are query ideas, not a guaranteed formula. If the name is commonly used, add a known cuisine, street, owner, chef, or parent-company name. Try spelling variants and the restaurant’s former street address if you know it. A search result that merely repeats the old address or says “closed” does not answer whether the business moved.

Frame the search around the question you actually need answered. Queries such as “Did [restaurant] move?”, “Where did [restaurant] move to?”, “Is [restaurant] permanently closed?” and “How can I contact [restaurant]?” can help surface different kinds of evidence. A post about a new address may answer the first two; a current status or licensing record may add context to the third; an official contact or parent-company page may help with the fourth. The wording itself is not evidence, so assess each result by who published it, when it was published and whether it gives a specific address or route to contact.
Search the public name and, if you know them, the owner, chef or parent-company name separately. A restaurant may be remembered by its public-facing name while legal or corporate information uses another name. Conversely, a person’s name may lead to unrelated businesses. Use these alternate terms to find possible links, then confirm that the result concerns the same restaurant and former location before treating it as a lead.
Check channels the restaurant controls
Look for an official website and social accounts, including older posts. A relocation announcement may give a new address, opening date, phone number, email, or a link to a parent company. Check the date and the exact wording: a post announcing a move is stronger evidence of a replacement location than a generic message that the restaurant is “closed,” while an old announcement may no longer describe current operations.
Yelp says it may look for external confirmation, such as a business website or social feed, when evaluating a substantial change to a listing. That makes the restaurant’s own channels useful both as a source for you and as corroboration for a change reported on a directory. Source: Yelp Support.
Read an announcement closely rather than inferring more than it says. A post can confirm an intention to move without establishing that the new premises are open now. Look for a stated address, an opening date or an explicit description of current operations. If the post points to a new location but does not give a direct number, the restaurant’s own website or parent-company page may provide a route to ask for clarification.
If the restaurant has no active public account, try the website’s contact or about page and look for a parent-company page. A general corporate contact route may be useful when the restaurant has multiple locations, but do not assume it is a direct line to the former location or its staff. When contacting a general channel, identify the restaurant by its name and former neighborhood or address, and ask whether it has a current location or local contact. This helps make clear which business you mean without assuming that the parent company handles location-level questions.
When a website or social page appears inactive, its age matters. An old address, number or announcement can remain visible after operations change. Treat older material as a clue to follow up, not as current confirmation; seek a newer restaurant-controlled source or independent corroboration before acting on it.

Google Maps
Search for the restaurant’s old listing and inspect the listing details, recent updates, and any indication that it moved or reopened. Google Maps supports suggested updates for a place that has moved or reopened, as well as closed-status changes. A user suggestion is reviewed and may take time to appear, so the listing can lag behind events on the ground. Google also cautions: “Do not mark a place open or closed based on its hours.” Missing or unusual hours alone are not reliable proof of closure. Source: Google Maps Help.

Keep the status labels distinct. A temporary closure, permanent closure, move, and reopening describe different situations. A listing marked closed may refer to the old premises; it does not necessarily tell you whether the same business operates somewhere else.
That distinction helps answer “Is it permanently closed?” without reading too much into one map label. A status tied to the old address tells you about that listing, not necessarily the restaurant’s full history or any successor location. A suggestion that a place moved or reopened may be useful, but it still needs checking: suggested changes are reviewed, and review time can mean that a listing does not immediately reflect what has happened.
If two map entries appear, compare their names and addresses with an announcement from the restaurant. A new entry can be a promising lead, but name similarity alone does not establish that it is the same operator or a replacement site. Likewise, an old listing that still appears in search results may remain useful for identifying the former neighborhood or a pointer to a newer listing, but it should not be mistaken for the current customer-facing location.

Yelp and other directories
Yelp says closed businesses remain listed, though they appear less prominently in search results. An old page can still contain a pointer to an announcement or a changed-status note, but treat that information as a lead to check elsewhere rather than independent proof of a permanent shutdown. Source: Yelp Support.
When comparing listings, note whether they refer to the old premises or a proposed new one. A directory entry with the restaurant’s familiar name may be stale, and a new location may have a slightly different name or operator. Look for a recent announcement, matching phone number, or another source that connects the new listing to the restaurant you knew.
A directory can still be helpful even if its status is not conclusive. The old page may preserve the name, former address or a pointer to an update, while another entry may suggest a possible new address. Write down what each page actually establishes: an old listing can establish which premises you are investigating; a new listing can provide a lead; neither alone necessarily establishes that the old restaurant moved there or that the new location is currently operating.
Use government records to identify the operator or establishment
Business registries and restaurant regulators answer different questions. A company registry can help identify the legal entity behind a public-facing restaurant name; a food-service regulator may hold establishment licensing or closure records. Neither should be mistaken for a single, nationwide directory of restaurant relocations.
Use official government sources when you need to check an entity or licensed establishment, but keep their purpose in mind. A registry entry may help connect a public name to a legal operator, while a licensing record concerns a food-service establishment. Neither type of record necessarily announces a move in the way a restaurant-controlled post might, and the details available vary by jurisdiction.

Search the business registry
In the United States, search the relevant state’s official business registry using the restaurant’s public name and, if known, its likely legal business name. Indiana’s official INBiz guidance says search results display the entity name, address, registered-agent information, and status. These details can help identify an operator or a possible contact route, but an entity’s registered address is not necessarily a restaurant’s customer-facing address. Source: Indiana State Government.
If the public name returns no result, that does not prove the restaurant was never registered: the legal entity may use a different name. Treat a registered agent or mailing address as an administrative lead, not an invitation to visit or a guaranteed customer-service contact.
Separate the questions a registry can help with from the ones it cannot settle on its own. An entity’s listed status and address may help you identify a possible operator or administrative contact. They do not, by themselves, tell you that a listed address is open to diners, that the business has moved there, or that a registered agent handles customer inquiries. If you find an entity name, use it to refine searches for a restaurant-controlled announcement or regulator record rather than treating it as a replacement-location confirmation.
Check the local restaurant regulator
Search the state or local agency responsible for food-service licenses. Record categories and terminology vary by jurisdiction. Florida’s Division of Hotels and Restaurants, for example, provides active food-service license extracts that include mailing and facility addresses, as well as emergency-closure reports. Florida describes an emergency closure as temporary until the conditions are corrected; it is not, by itself, proof that a restaurant permanently shut down. Source: Florida DBPR.
Use the equivalent food-service regulator where the restaurant operated. An active license can help identify a licensed establishment, while a closure report may explain an enforcement-related interruption. Neither record necessarily confirms a publicly announced move or tells you whether a new address is open to customers.
In particular, do not collapse an emergency closure into a permanent-closure conclusion. The Florida example describes the emergency status as temporary until conditions are corrected. That is a different kind of information from a business announcement that it has moved or ended operations. Read the record’s own category and description, and look for a separate current source if your question is whether the restaurant now serves customers at another address.
These U.S. examples illustrate record types rather than a shared nationwide system. Indiana’s INBiz lookup is a state business-entity search, and Florida’s DBPR portal is a state restaurant-regulatory resource. For another state or locality, find the relevant official company registry and food-service regulator; outside the United States, look for equivalent local company-register and regulator records. Do not assume that a record format or status label in one jurisdiction applies everywhere.

Compare possible answers before you act
If search results point to more than one address or phone number, compare the evidence rather than choosing the most prominent result. Give more weight to a recent, restaurant-controlled announcement that names a street address than to an undated directory entry or a legal mailing address. Check whether a second independent source supports the lead and whether the status means “moved,” “temporarily closed,” or “permanently closed.”

- Source control: Is the information published by the restaurant, a third-party directory, or a government agency?
- Recency: When was the announcement, listing update, or record issued?
- Specificity: Does it provide a customer-facing street address or local number, or only a general mailing address?
- Status meaning: Does it describe a temporary closure, permanent closure, move, or reopening?
- Corroboration: Does a second source support the same address or contact route?
These distinctions matter because the sources serve different purposes. A restaurant post can announce where it intends to operate; a map listing can reflect a user-suggested change after review; an entity registry identifies legal business details; and a regulator’s record concerns licensed food-service activity. They are not interchangeable confirmations.
Apply the same comparison to phone numbers. A number connected to an individual location or otherwise under the business’s control is a stronger contact lead than a number copied from an old directory page. A general company number may still be useful, but its specificity is lower: it may not reach the particular location or answer whether that restaurant has reopened. Ask yourself not only whether a source offers a number, but what the source shows about who controls it and which business or location it serves.
Recency and corroboration are useful together. A current restaurant-controlled announcement naming an address is a strong lead; a current map listing or another independent source that points to the same address adds support. If an old directory page conflicts with a newer official announcement, note the dates and favor the newer, more direct source while still verifying before making a special trip. If two recent sources disagree, do not resolve the conflict merely by selecting the first result shown.

Verify the address or contact route before relying on it
- Open the newest restaurant-controlled source you found. Confirm that it gives the address or number you plan to use and that the announcement is current enough to rely on.
- Check the exact location in a map listing. Compare the street address and business name with the announcement. Remember that map changes can take time to appear.
- For a phone number, check that it belongs to the individual location or is under the business’s control. Google’s Business Profile guidance calls for accurate addresses and a number connected to the individual business location or under business control. Source: Google Business Profile guidance.
- Contact the business before making a special trip. Ask whether it is operating at the address and, if relevant, whether the number reaches the location you mean. If the only contact route is a general company channel, make clear which restaurant and former address you are asking about.
Do not treat an old directory phone number, a registered-agent address, or a map status change as equivalent to direct confirmation. If the available evidence conflicts, use the most recent business-controlled contact route you can find and seek clarification before relying on a disputed address.
A practical final check is to match the details across sources: the restaurant name, the proposed street address and, if you are calling, the number’s connection to the business or location. If a source gives only a mailing address, do not assume it is a place to visit. If a listing says “closed” but an announcement suggests a move, distinguish the old premises’ status from whether the restaurant has a new one. The goal is not to make every platform agree; it is to find a current, specific lead that is corroborated well enough to rely on.
What to conclude when there is no clear replacement
It is possible to confirm that a restaurant no longer operates at its old address without finding a successor location or a continuing public contact channel. The platforms and records described here cannot guarantee that a new location exists or that an owner will respond. If you cannot find a current announcement or a credible contact route, report the result narrowly: the former listing appears closed, but you could not verify a replacement address.
That is a more accurate conclusion than saying the restaurant permanently closed when the available evidence only concerns its former premises. It also avoids presenting a stale number, a government mailing address or an unconfirmed map suggestion as a current way to reach the business. There may simply be no publicly announced successor location or continuing public contact route available in the sources you checked.
The government-record examples above are U.S.-specific and state-specific, not a unified national system. Outside the United States, look for the equivalent company register, food-service regulator, and consumer listings in the relevant country or locality. Apply the same distinction between an administrative record and a customer-facing location.

Frequently Asked Questions
How can I tell whether a restaurant moved or closed permanently?
Check the restaurant’s own website and social accounts for a dated announcement, then compare the old map or directory listing with any possible new listing. A closed label for the old address is not proof that the business ended everywhere. Keep temporary closure, permanent closure, move and reopening distinct, and look for a current, specific source that confirms what happened.
Does a Google Maps “closed” label prove the restaurant is gone for good?
No. The label may describe the old premises, and Google Maps supports different suggestions for temporary closure, permanent closure, a move or reopening. Suggestions are reviewed and can take time to appear. Google also says not to determine whether a place is open or closed solely from its hours.
Why check a restaurant’s website or social media if its listing is closed?
A restaurant-controlled channel may contain a relocation announcement, current address, phone number, email or parent-company contact page. Yelp says it may use external confirmation such as a business website or social feed when evaluating a substantial listing change, so those channels can also help corroborate a directory update.
Can a business registry tell me where the restaurant serves customers now?
Not necessarily. A state entity registry can help identify the legal operator and may show an address, registered-agent information and entity status. The address may be administrative or a mailing address, not a customer-facing restaurant. Confirm any replacement location through a current restaurant-controlled source and corroborating evidence.
What does an emergency restaurant closure record mean?
It depends on the jurisdiction and the record’s definition. In Florida, the Division of Hotels and Restaurants describes emergency closures as temporary until conditions are corrected. That record should not be treated on its own as proof of a permanent shutdown or as confirmation of a new location.
What should I do if I find a possible new address but no reliable phone number?
Compare the address with a recent restaurant-controlled announcement and a map or other independent listing, then verify before making a special trip. Google Business Profile guidance calls for accurate addresses and a number connected to the individual location or under business control. If no credible contact route exists, the sources may not establish whether the new location is operating.
The Bottom Line
Search the restaurant’s exact name with its former city or neighborhood, check its own website and social accounts, then use map listings, directories and relevant government records as corroborating leads. Distinguish a move from a temporary or permanent closure, and verify any replacement address or number through a recent, business-controlled source before relying on it. If no credible source confirms a successor location or public contact route, say that it could not be verified.
