How to Filter Profanity in Live Streams with Amazon Transcribe

Amazon Transcribe can filter configured words in live transcripts. Set up a matching custom vocabulary filter, choose mask, remove, or tag, and handle partial results carefully.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Amazon Transcribe can mask, remove, or tag words from a custom vocabulary list in a live transcription. To use it, create a vocabulary filter, attach it to a streaming transcription request with a matching language and filter method, and handle partial results as provisional. It filters configured words in the transcript; it does not guarantee that every profanity or harmful expression will be detected, nor does it mute the live audio.

What Amazon Transcribe’s profanity filter does

AWS describes custom vocabulary filters as a way to apply selected words to streaming and batch transcription. Offensive or profane terms are one documented use. The filter acts on recognized transcript words, not directly on the audio stream, so a live-caption application must decide what viewers see and whether any separate audio moderation or muting is needed.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The filter is list-based, not a universal semantic detector. AWS says customers should review and supplement its default filter for their language and use case. Exact matching means unlisted terms, alternate spellings or inflections, obfuscations, homophones, and speech-recognition errors can escape the configured list. Treat it as one moderation control rather than proof that captions or a broadcast are safe. See AWS’s custom vocabulary filter guide and Responsible AI guidance.

Choose how matched words should appear

Method Transcript effect Use it when
mask Replaces a matched word with ***. You want captions to conceal the word while showing that something was filtered.
remove Deletes the matched word from the returned transcript. The transcript should omit the configured term entirely.
tag Leaves the word in place and marks it as a filter match. A downstream review or substitution step will act on it. Tagging alone does not hide the word from viewers.

These are transcript-output choices; none of them edits the source audio. AWS documents the methods in its vocabulary-filter documentation and the StartStreamTranscription API reference.

Set up a streaming vocabulary filter

  1. Define your moderation list and language. Decide which terms your policy covers and in which spoken language or languages. Create a custom vocabulary filter using the words or a text file. Do not assume a general profanity list is complete for your audience.
  2. Check feature availability for the language. Consult AWS’s supported languages table for current streaming and vocabulary-filter support. Availability is feature-specific and can change. A filter configured for a different language may not apply. If you use language identification, follow the API’s rules for supplying vocabulary-filter parameters.
  3. Start a streaming transcription request. Use the StartStreamTranscription operation over HTTP/2 or WebSocket, or use an AWS SDK. Supply the language configuration, media encoding, actual input sample rate, vocabulary-filter name, and selected filter method. AWS recommends SDKs as the simpler, more reliable integration route. Review the API reference for the request parameters and constraints.
  4. Send supported audio in its real format. Streaming inputs include FLAC, OPUS in an Ogg container, and signed 16-bit little-endian PCM. AWS recommends lossless FLAC or PCM. The sample rate in the request must match the audio being sent; WAV is not listed as a streaming encoding in the guide. See Streaming transcription.
  5. Apply results with the right event handling. Route transcript text through the application behavior you chose: show masked text, omit removed terms, or pass tagged matches to a later review step. Keep partial results revisable and use finalized segment results for durable transcript records.

AWS’s streaming interfaces include SDKs, HTTP/2, WebSockets, and the Management Console. The console walkthrough uses a computer microphone as an audio source; a separate USB microphone is optional, not a Transcribe requirement. AWS announced real-time vocabulary filtering on May 20, 2020; that launch date is product history, not a performance guarantee.

Handle partial captions without treating them as final

Transcribe returns results while audio is streaming, and partial text can change as more speech context arrives. Do not permanently publish, archive, or trigger irreversible moderation actions from an early partial as though it were settled. For persistent records, wait for finalized segment results and decide how the interface should replace earlier text.

This USB microphone for PC and iPhone delivers clear, consistent vocals for podcast production, live streaming, voice-over work, online classes, virtual meetings, and gaming commentary.
  • Intelligent Noise Reduction for Clearer Speech – Touch and hold the mute button to activate Noise Reduction Mode, which helps this microphone for PC reduce distracting background sounds while keeping your voice clear and focused. • Independent Knobs for Personalized Sound – Dedicated controls for mic gain, headphone volume, and echo let youfine-tune the USB podcast microphone directly without opening software settings. These convenient mic controls make it easy to balance vocal input, set a comfortable listening level, or add depth and atmosphere to your voice.
  • Silent Tap-to-Mute with Easy-to-See Red Indicators – Tap the mute button to silence the PC mic instantly without producing a distracting clicking sound. When mute is active, both the dedicated status light and RGB ring turn red, providing clear visual confirmation at a glance and helping prevent unintended audio.
  • Hear Your Voice Clearly at a Comfortable Volume – Connect compatible headphones to the built-in 3.5 mm jack on this desktop podcast microphone for zero-latency monitoring. Adjust the monitoring volume to suit your headphones and listening preference, making vocal details easier to hear while maintaining a comfortable level during longer sessions. Real-time feedback helps you check your delivery and keep your sound clear and consistent.

Partial-result stabilization can make output faster, but AWS describes a trade-off: higher stability returns results faster with slightly lower accuracy, while lower stability favors accuracy. The documentation does not establish a universal latency or error-rate figure, so test settings against the needs of your own captioning or review workflow. See Streaming and partial results and the API reference.

Know what the filter does not cover

  • It is not complete profanity detection. The list and recognition output bound what can be matched; policy decisions and additional review remain your responsibility.
  • It does not enforce a platform’s conduct rules. Filtering transcript words does not establish whether speech complies with a streaming platform’s broader policies.
  • It is not PII redaction. The API’s content identification and redaction controls concern personally identifiable information, not profanity-list matching. They do not replace a vocabulary filter.
  • It does not turn transcription into audio censorship. AWS describes Transcribe as converting speech to text; it can return inappropriate speech verbatim unless transcript controls are applied. A viewer who hears the live audio may hear words that captions mask or remove.

For policy-sensitive streams, consider separate human review, delay, or audio-moderation controls appropriate to your platform. Do not treat a filtered transcript as evidence that the spoken audio was blocked.

Troubleshoot common filtering problems

  • A listed term still appears unfiltered: Check that the request names the intended vocabulary filter and method, the filter’s language matches the speech, and the language supports filtering in streaming mode. Confirm the recognized word matches a listed term.
  • A word appears in one caption update and disappears or changes later: The event may be a partial result. Update provisional captions as new results arrive; base records and final moderation decisions on finalized segments.
  • Audio fails or transcription behaves unexpectedly: Confirm the encoding is supported, that OPUS is in an Ogg container, and that the declared sample rate matches the actual input. Prefer FLAC or signed 16-bit little-endian PCM where suitable.
  • Tagged profanity remains visible: That is expected. tag marks a match but leaves the word in the transcript; choose mask or remove if the returned caption must not show it.
  • Some offensive language is missed: Expand and review the custom list for the relevant language and moderation policy, while accounting for recognition errors and variants. The filter is not an exhaustive semantic detector.
