A good filmed interview depends on three things working together: a frame that suits the story, soft and intentional lighting, and clear dialogue that is actually being recorded. Scout the room first, set the camera and microphone before your subject arrives, then record and listen to a short test. This guide walks through that setup and the checks that prevent avoidable problems.
Plan the room and the interview frame
Scout for both sound and picture
Choose a location that supports the subject visually and is quiet enough for an uninterrupted conversation. Listen for steady background noise, intermittent interruptions, and echo. A sound can be distracting even when its source is outside the frame, so consider whether audible ambience has a visible source. Make the background purposeful
Keep the background uncluttered so it supports rather than competes with the interviewee. A simple backdrop is often effective; if the setting itself adds context, retain only the details that help the viewer understand the subject. Set framing and eyeline with the edit in mind
Decide whether the interviewee will sit or stand, where they will be positioned, and where they will look while answering. Keep the camera framing and eyeline consistent if you expect to edit together multiple interview shots. Think about how the footage will cut before recording; a shot that looks pleasing on its own may be harder to combine with other material if the subject’s position or eyeline changes unexpectedly. Choose and place a microphone for intelligible speech
Prioritize dialogue that is easy to understand. Adobe identifies three common microphone categories for interview production: lavalier, tabletop, and shotgun (Adobe: Premiere Pro Q&A for shooting and planning). The right choice depends on where the microphone can be placed, how close it can stay to the speaker, whether it is wired or wireless, and whether it connects to your recording device.
- Lavalier: A small microphone worn close to the speaker. Its proximity can help capture speech clearly while keeping the microphone visually unobtrusive. Wired and wireless setups have different connection and compatibility considerations.
- Tabletop: A microphone placed on a table or nearby surface. Consider whether the position is close enough for clear speech and whether handling, jewelry, or table contact could cause noise.
- Shotgun: A directional microphone that can be positioned toward the speaker. Plan its placement so it captures the voice clearly without entering the frame.

Shape the light for the story
Choose a lighting style that fits the subject
High-key lighting is bright and can suit an open, upbeat interview or training-video look. Low-key lighting uses stronger contrast and more shadow. Neither is universally better; choose a look that supports the subject and emotional tone. A larger light source creates softer-looking shadows. A softbox or diffuser can soften a smaller light and make the illumination less harsh. Place and adjust the light with the subject and desired mood in mind rather than assuming one arrangement suits every interview.

Keep artificial lights coherent
If you use more than one fixture, keep their color temperatures consistent so the subject is not lit by noticeably mismatched tones. When choosing a light, consider whether it is continuous, its portability and output, its power requirements, and whether it accepts modifiers such as a softbox or diffuser. Adobe’s video-lighting guidance emphasizes these practical considerations and color consistency (Adobe: Lighting for video).
Run a complete preflight before the interview
- Check the location: Listen for noise, interruptions, and echo; confirm that the background is suitable.
- Set the frame: Position the subject, camera, and eyeline, and make sure the framing works for the intended edit.
- Connect the microphone: Confirm that it is connected to the recording device and positioned to capture the speaker clearly.
- Shape the light: Set the intended look, soften harsh shadows if appropriate, and check that multiple lights have consistent color.
- Test the whole setup: If possible, use a stand-in. Record a short sample, then listen back rather than relying only on a visual connection or meter.
- Check recording status: Verify that the camera or recording device is capturing both picture and the intended audio input before the interviewee arrives.

Record the conversation and protect the usable audio
Monitor the recorded signal while the interview is underway. A microphone that appears connected may still fail to send audio to the recording device, so keep checking that sound is being captured. Listen for changes in room noise and interruptions.

Verify the recording before wrapping
Before the interviewee leaves, confirm that the recording is present and usable. Check that the file exists and that its audio contains the conversation, not just a connected microphone or a camera status indicator. If anything is missing or unusable, resolve it while the subject is still available.
