How to Fetch Database Data in an Oxwall Plugin

Oxwall plugins can fetch database data through the secure BOL model. Put query logic in a DAO where possible, and verify code against your installed version.

Yes—an Oxwall plugin can fetch database data, but its coding policy says database queries must use the secure BOL model. Put query logic in a DAO where possible; the policy describes service-class placement as the minimum. Check the exact API against the Oxwall version installed on your site before using code examples.

Where should an Oxwall database query go?

Oxwall’s Store Coding Standards state: “All database queries must be made using the secure BOL model.” The policy’s preferred location for query code is a DAO class. It says that service-class placement is the minimum, and describes querying a core table outside your plugin as an exception to the usual plugin boundary.

Placement What the policy says
DAO class Preferred location for query logic.
Service class Minimum placement specified by the policy when query logic is not in a DAO.
Outside the plugin The policy describes access to a core table outside a plugin as an exception; keep SQL in the service class at minimum.

The policy does not give criteria for choosing a particular query method or provide a complete version-specific fetch example.

How should data flow through a plugin?

  1. Identify whether the data belongs to your plugin or to a core Oxwall component.
  2. Implement the database operation in the appropriate BOL/DAO layer, following the project’s coding policy.
  3. Expose the result through the service layer as the plugin needs it.
  4. Render or consume that result in the relevant part of the plugin.

This describes the architecture implied by Oxwall’s DAO and service placement rules; it is not a copyable API recipe.

Where can you find code that matches your Oxwall version?

Oxwall’s developer hub points to manuals, working example plugins, and a developer forum. Use those resources alongside the source installed on your site to confirm method names, arguments, and result handling. Avoid generic PHP SQL examples that bypass Oxwall’s intended data-access model.

What should you verify on the installation?

Oxwall’s current website describes MySQL as its storage technology, but that does not establish the database version, schema, or plugin table names on an individual installation. The Oxwall website and public project repository provide project context and links to documentation, but not a version-specific query API for your site. Check the installed version and schema before adapting an example.
