You can send a fax without a fax machine: prepare a digital document, upload it to an online fax service, enter the recipient’s fax number, and check the delivery status. If your family also needs to receive faxes, choose a service plan that provides an inbound number or another receiving arrangement; sending access alone does not guarantee one.
What a browser-based fax line actually replaces
A browser workflow replaces the machine-and-phone-line steps for sending. It does not make faxing disappear: the document still has to reach the recipient’s fax number, and you still need to confirm whether it was delivered. The services reviewed describe sending through a web portal without a dedicated fax machine or analog phone line. Their features and delivery performance have not been independently tested here.

For a family, the practical question is whether you need occasional outgoing faxes, a stable number for incoming documents, or both. Those needs can lead to different service plans.
How to send a fax from a browser
- Prepare the document. Save a digital document in a format the service accepts. The reviewed services describe PDF and image uploads; check the provider’s current file, page, and size limits.
- Open the service’s web portal. The provider may require an account, payment, or a particular plan before sending.
- Upload the file and enter the destination fax number. Check the number carefully, especially if you are sending sensitive information or have not used it before.
- Send and check the status. Use the portal’s delivery status, history, or receipt feature if available. A submitted fax is not the same as confirmation that it was delivered.
Some services offer alternatives such as email-to-fax, a mobile app, an optional browser extension, or a print driver. These are conveniences, not requirements for the basic upload-and-send workflow. Browserfax describes uploading PDF or JPG/PNG files, merging multiple files, and an optional Chrome extension; WestFax describes a portal with upload, sending, inbox, history, and status features; SecurelyFax describes browser upload as well as phone-camera capture, email-to-fax, and API sending. These are providers’ own feature descriptions, not independent test results: Browserfax, WestFax, SecurelyFax.

Receiving faxes is a separate decision
Do not assume that an online fax service automatically gives you a personal receiving number. Plans may offer a dedicated number, a shared inbox arrangement, or no inbound receiving at all. Incoming faxes may appear in an online inbox or arrive through email notification or forwarding, depending on the service and plan.
- Only sending: A family that sends occasional forms may not need an inbound number.
- Receiving replies or paperwork: Check whether a dedicated number is included, whether incoming documents go to an inbox or email, and who in the household can access them.
- Shared receiving: SecurelyFax says its free tier uses a shared inbound number with an inbox code, while dedicated US numbers are available on paid subscriptions. Browserfax and WestFax describe dedicated fax-number options. Confirm current plan terms directly with each provider.
Provider descriptions and number availability are plan-specific and can change. See SecurelyFax, Browserfax, and WestFax.

Turning paper into an uploadable document
If a relative hands you a paper form, digitize it before uploading. A phone camera can be enough for a one-off page: frame the entire document, use good lighting, and make sure the text is readable. SecurelyFax describes phone-camera capture and a built-in scanner workflow; WestFax says its phone app can scan paper documents using the camera.
A separate document scanner is optional. It may be more convenient for households that regularly handle paper or need consistent multi-page capture, but the reviewed provider workflows also describe phone scanning. No particular scanner is established as necessary or tested for this use. See SecurelyFax and WestFax.

Questions to check before choosing
- How often will you send? Compare per-page rates or prepaid pages with a recurring monthly plan, including any overage charges.
- Must you receive faxes? Confirm whether a number is included, whether it is dedicated or shared, and how incoming documents reach the family.
- What can you upload? Check accepted formats, page and file-size limits, and whether multiple files can be merged.
- What proof is available? Look for delivery status, receipts, and history, and understand what the provider means by a successful send.
- How will paper be captured? Decide whether phone-camera scanning is enough or whether frequent multi-page work makes a physical scanner more convenient.
- How are documents handled? Review encryption, retention, access controls, and any compliance commitments for the exact plan you intend to use.
Handle sensitive documents with care
Security descriptions on a provider’s product page are vendor claims, not independent proof that every part of your document’s journey is secure. Review the plan-specific terms for encryption, retention, access, audit logs, and any business associate agreement before sending sensitive material. Do not infer that a service is suitable for regulated information simply because it advertises a security feature.
For US healthcare information, the Department of Health and Human Services says the HIPAA Privacy Rule allows covered providers to share protected health information for treatment without patient authorization when they use reasonable safeguards. HHS gives confirming an unfamiliar fax number as an example: HHS HIPAA Privacy Rule FAQ. This guidance is narrow; it does not mean every consumer fax use or online fax plan is automatically compliant.
