If the phone was set up for remote management, Samsung Find or Google Find My Device may also offer an erase option. Either way, a reset deletes data on the phone, and Recovery Mode does not bypass Google’s ownership check: you may need the Google account previously linked to the device to finish setup.
Choose a reset route that fits your situation
Use these options only for a phone you own or are authorized to erase. The right method depends on whether you have the phone, whether remote features were enabled, and whether you can sign in to the accounts previously associated with it.

Before you erase the phone
- Check for a backup if possible. A factory reset removes personal data and settings stored on the device. Anything not backed up may be lost. Samsung recommends backing up before resetting when possible. Samsung UK reset guidance.
- Make sure you can use the associated accounts. After a Recovery Mode reset, Google Device Protection may require the Google account and password previously linked to the phone. A reset is not a way to get around that verification. Samsung US: Google Device Protection.
- Try account recovery before erasing if your goal is to regain access to data. Resetting is destructive; it does not recover files that are only on the phone.
Reset with Recovery Mode
Recovery Mode can start a wipe without opening Settings or entering the screen-lock password. The exact button combination and steps depend on the Galaxy model and software, so use Samsung’s instructions for your specific device rather than assuming one recipe applies to every Galaxy.

- In Recovery, select the factory data reset or wipe-data option as described for that model, and confirm only if you accept losing data stored on the device.
- After the reset completes, continue through setup. If prompted, sign in with the Google account previously associated with the phone.
If you do not remember that Google account, use Google’s account recovery process. Samsung advises owners who cannot recall their Google account information to contact an authorized service center; be prepared to provide proof of purchase. Samsung US: Google Device Protection.

Erase remotely with Samsung Find or SmartThings Find
Samsung’s US remote-erase instructions require an eligible phone that is powered on, connected to a network, associated with a Samsung account, and configured with remote controls before it became inaccessible. You must authenticate to the Samsung account and may be asked to verify your identity. If those conditions are met, sign in to Samsung’s Find service, select the device, and choose the erase option presented for it. Samsung US: locate a lost Galaxy phone or tablet.
Remote erasure still wipes the phone and may trigger Google Device Protection during setup. If the phone is offline, the service may not be able to complete the erase until it reconnects; Samsung’s instructions describe the prerequisites but do not guarantee an erase when those conditions are absent.

Erase remotely with Google Find My Device
Samsung also points to Google Find My Device as a remote reset route for a Galaxy set up with a Google account. Sign in using the same Google account associated with the phone, select the device, and use the available erase/reset action. Samsung says the phone must be powered on to be located. Samsung US: unable to unlock a Galaxy screen.

Remote erase is not an account-unlock method. Afterward, setup may still ask for the Google account that was previously on the device.

If setup stops at Google account verification
This is Google Device Protection, an ownership check that can appear after a Recovery Mode reset. Samsung states that a device reset through the Recovery menu requires the associated Google account and password to unlock after a factory reset. Samsung US: Google Device Protection.
- Use Google account recovery if you have forgotten the account credentials.
- If you cannot recover the account, contact an authorized Samsung service center and bring proof of purchase.
- Do not rely on another reset to remove the verification requirement; the reset does not establish ownership.
When a reset is not the right choice
If your priority is recovering photos, messages, or other files that are not backed up, do not reset until you have considered any available backup or legitimate recovery option. A factory reset is meant to erase the device, not preserve its contents. If you can still unlock the phone, use the normal Settings reset path and make a backup first; Samsung notes that resetting through Settings avoids the Recovery-reset Device Protection scenario when Settings is accessible.
