Before sharing an AI-generated children’s book, verify every factual claim—including claims implied by illustrations—then review the book for its intended child reader, safety, privacy, permissions, and any applicable disclosure rules. Treat AI output as a draft: fluent wording is not evidence that a statement or citation is correct.
1. Make a list of claims to verify
Read the whole book, not just its main text. Check the narrative, back matter, captions, labels, and pictures for statements or details a reader could take as fact. This matters especially in nonfiction and in stories involving history, science, health, or culture-specific details.

For each checkable claim, write down the precise wording and what evidence would support it. NAEYC’s guidance for its contributors assigns writers responsibility for factual accuracy and citation verification; it is a professional publishing policy, not a universal legal requirement. A simple claim log can keep the review auditable:
- Claim: the exact sentence or detail in the book.
- Where it appears: page, paragraph, caption, label, or image.
- Evidence needed: what source would establish it.
- Source and check date: enough detail for someone else to retrace the check.
- Decision: keep, correct, qualify, or remove.
2. Check the evidence, not just the citation
Open the original source when possible. Confirm that it supports the book’s exact claim, including its wording, place, date, and degree of certainty. A real citation may still be inadequate if it supports a narrower or different statement. Keep the source details with your claim log so an editor or reader can follow the trail.

Do not assume every claim needs the same number of sources. The guidance cited here calls for fact-checking and citation verification, but does not set a universal source-count threshold for every claim. For a specialized or consequential topic, consider having a qualified subject-matter reviewer assess the claims as well as the sources.

3. Review pictures, captions, and labels alongside the text
Illustrations can make factual claims even when the prose does not. Compare every image with the text and check for misleading physical details, contradictions, or unintended impressions. A caption or label should be clear and sufficient for its purpose; in an informational book, ask whether the illustration genuinely helps explain the subject.

- Does the picture show the right object, animal, place, time period, or cultural detail?
- Could a child infer something from the image that conflicts with the text?
- Do captions and labels accurately identify what is shown?
- Does the image clarify information, or merely decorate it in a way that could confuse?
4. Read it as the intended child might
Read the book aloud. Look beyond spelling and grammar: consider whether the language is understandable and lively, whether the subject and characters are likely to interest the intended reader, and whether the story or information fits that child’s developmental context. An age label is only a broad guide, not a complete assessment of an individual child. If possible, ask a caregiver, educator, or editor familiar with the intended readers to look for confusing language, inappropriate material, or moments that may land differently than intended.
5. Check safety, fairness, and privacy
Consider whether the content could harm, stereotype, exclude, or confuse children. UNICEF’s child-centered AI guidance identifies safety, privacy, fairness, transparency, well-being, and inclusion as important concerns. It is a policy framework for thinking about children’s rights, not a certification checklist for a manuscript. Review how the book was made and shared, too. If a child’s name, image, location, or other personal information went into an AI service, check that service’s data practices and the terms under which the manuscript or images were shared. The American Library Association advises human review of AI output and cautions that systems with unclear data practices may expose sensitive information. Its guidance is written for libraries, so apply it to an author’s workflow with that context in mind. American Library Association: Guidance on the Use of Artificial Intelligence in Libraries.
6. Keep authorship records and check permissions
Before publication, preserve a record of what a person wrote or revised, what the AI generated, and any outside material used. In the United States, the Copyright Office’s 29 January 2025 summary says copyrightability depends on human-authored expressive elements: providing prompts alone is not enough, while AI assistance or AI-generated material within a larger human-authored work does not automatically prevent copyright protection. Separately, check permissions for any external text, images, or other material included in the book. The available guidance does not establish a universal permission rule for every source or jurisdiction; when rights are uncertain, do not assume that AI involvement resolves them.

There is no single disclosure rule for every way of sharing a children’s book. Requirements depend on location, platform, context, and the nature of the AI contribution. Australia’s National AI Centre recommends considering both how much AI contributed and the content’s impact when communicating AI use. Australian National AI Centre: Communicating AI Use.
For the European Union, the European Commission’s page, last updated 31 July 2026, says relevant transparency duties under AI Act Article 50 apply from 2 August 2026 and cover defined content and actor categories. The Commission also describes the AI-generated-content transparency code as voluntary; do not infer that every privately shared children’s story falls under a legal disclosure duty. For any specific use—such as private read-aloud, classroom distribution, public posting, or commercial publication—check the rules that apply to your location and platform. A clear, proportionate note about AI’s role may help readers understand how the book was made, but it is not a substitute for meeting any applicable requirement.
Choosing the right reviewer
When deciding whether to review the book yourself or ask someone else, match the reviewer to the risks and the intended use. A factual manuscript may need subject expertise; an audience-fit review needs a child-reader perspective; and any outside review should respect manuscript and child-data privacy.
- Subject expertise: Can the reviewer assess the book’s factual domain?
- Child-reader perspective: Can they judge language, interest, and developmental fit for the intended audience?
- Source transparency: Can claims and citations be checked independently?
- Privacy: Will the manuscript or child data be shared, and under what terms?
- Scope: Is the book for a private read-aloud, public sharing, or commercial publication?
A children’s book editor or qualified subject-matter reviewer can help with specialized work, but the appropriate reviewer depends on the manuscript and audience. No single review method replaces checking the claims, images, and context yourself.
