Treat every AI answer as a set of leads, not as evidence. Before you cite it, split the response into individual claims, verify that each source exists, read the original evidence, check the wording and context against independent sources, and obtain expert review when an error could cause harm. Cite the source you personally verified—not the AI response, a search snippet, or a detector score.
Why AI-generated information requires claim-by-claim checking
An AI assistant can produce a polished paragraph containing a real source, a distorted source, an invented citation and an unsupported conclusion in the same answer. Fluency, detail, a confident tone and a working-looking URL do not establish accuracy. Verification has to happen at the level of each factual statement.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Three different questions are often confused:
- Does the reference exist? A journal article, report, court decision, quotation or web page must be real and identifiable.
- Does the reference support the sentence? A genuine source may discuss a related subject without supporting the number, causal claim or wording attached to it.
- Is the claim accurate now? Even a correctly cited historical statement may be outdated, jurisdiction-specific or contradicted by later evidence.
Authorship is a separate issue. An AI-content detector may estimate whether text resembles machine-generated writing, but that result does not show that a factual claim is true or false. Nor does it prove who wrote the text. Factual verification and authorship or provenance analysis answer different questions.

1. Pause and extract every checkable claim
Do not fact-check an entire answer as if it were one proposition. Copy the response into a working document and mark each independent assertion. Separate names, dates, quantities, quotations, causal explanations, comparisons, legal requirements and links.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A useful extraction rule is to ask, “Could this sentence be shown to be wrong without making the rest of the paragraph wrong?” If yes, treat it as a separate claim. Mark compound sentences at their joins: a statistic may need one source, while the explanation of why it changed needs another.
- Underline names of people, organizations, products, laws and studies.
- Circle dates, percentages, prices, sample sizes and other numbers.
- Put quotation marks around claimed verbatim language and record who supposedly said it.
- Copy every citation, DOI, title and URL into its own row rather than checking only the links that look suspicious.
- Label interpretations and causal statements, which usually need more than a single descriptive source.
2. Establish that each cited source exists
Search for the work by its title and author independently of the AI answer. Open the publisher, government, court, standards body, university or journal record and confirm the author, publication date, edition or version, and the relevant page or section.
A plausible title, DOI or URL is not proof that the item exists. If a link returns an error, search the exact title in an authoritative catalog or the publisher’s site. Check spelling variations and title changes, but do not silently substitute a different work. Record whether you found the original, a reliable archive, or only an unverified mention.

A page can be moved, revised or removed after you cite it; an access note helps a later reader understand what you checked.
3. Trace the claim back to original evidence
Follow a summary or review upstream to the study, dataset, official record, standards text, legislative document or named speaker. Read enough of the original to establish the method, population, time period, limitations and exact wording.
For a quotation, compare the AI’s punctuation and wording with the primary transcript, recording or published text. Ellipses can remove a qualification, and a sentence can change meaning when the preceding or following paragraph is omitted.
For a statistic, verify all of these dimensions:
- Denominator: what population or set of observations the percentage uses.
- Geography: country, state, city, platform or market covered.
- Time period: survey field dates, measurement year or reporting interval.
- Definition: what counts as an event, user, error or success.
- Method: sample design, exclusions, weighting and uncertainty where reported.
NIST’s 2024 report Reducing Risks Posed by Synthetic Content: An Overview of Technical Approaches to Digital Content Transparency describes provenance and authentication as ways to provide information about content origin and history. It also cautions that transparency “does not guarantee” trustworthiness and can sometimes undermine it. Provenance is useful context; it is not a substitute for reading the evidence.

4. Read laterally, not just vertically
Vertical reading stays on the cited page and asks whether it looks professional. Lateral reading leaves that page and checks what other credible sources say about the publisher, evidence and claim. The Stanford Social Media Lab defines lateral reading as “the act of evaluating the credibility of a source by comparing it with multiple sources.”
- Open a new search and look up the organization, author and document title separately.
- Check whether independent reporting, scholarly commentary, official records or specialist organizations describe the same evidence.
- Look for corrections, retractions, conflicts of interest, methodological criticism and contradictory findings.
- Follow secondary coverage back to the primary record. A dozen articles repeating one press release are not twelve independent confirmations.
Independence matters more than the number of search results. Sources that copy the same unsupported sentence provide apparent agreement without new evidence.
5. Check context, recency and jurisdiction
Classify the claim as stable or time-sensitive. A basic historical fact may change slowly; software capabilities, public guidance, prices, regulations, election results and current events can change quickly.
For a changing claim, record the latest authoritative version and the date and jurisdiction it covers. Confirm that a rule from one country is not being presented as universal, that an old product specification is not described as current, and that a historical result is not framed as a present condition.

6. Escalate high-consequence claims
The amount of checking should rise with the cost of being wrong. For health, legal, financial, safety, employment, education, identity or security decisions, consult primary authoritative material and a qualified professional or subject expert.
UNESCO’s 2023 Guidance for generative AI in education and research calls for human-centered validation. NIST’s work on synthetic-content risk likewise discusses human-assisted approaches alongside automated methods. These principles do not require the same reviewer for every topic; they mean that a machine-generated answer should not be the final authority where a mistake could materially harm someone.

7. Cite only what you personally verified
Use the original source that supports the sentence. Do not cite the AI conversation, a search-result snippet or a source that merely appears in the generated bibliography.
Keep a verification note with the source’s title, author, publisher, version or date, relevant page or section, access date and any limitation that affects your wording. If a material claim remains unverified, choose one of three honest outcomes: omit it, qualify it narrowly, or state that verification was not possible. Do not retain a vivid but unsupported detail simply because it improves the paragraph.
How to verify AI citations and links
Use two separate passes. The first asks whether the citation is real. The second asks whether it supports the exact statement.
| Pass | What to check | Acceptable result | Failure response |
|---|---|---|---|
| Existence | Title, author, publisher, date, edition or version, stable record | You can locate the original or an authoritative archive | Search independently; if no reliable record exists, remove the citation and claim |
| Support | Relevant passage, table, dataset or ruling | The source states or directly demonstrates the proposition in its stated scope | Rewrite to match the evidence, find a better source, or omit the claim |
| Applicability | Population, geography, date, method and caveats | The evidence fits the audience and wording of your sentence | Add the limitation or stop generalizing |
A source can pass the existence test and fail the support test. For example, an authentic survey about a small group cannot automatically support a claim about an entire country. A real court decision from one jurisdiction cannot by itself establish a rule everywhere else.
Checking statistics without being misled
Numbers create an impression of precision, so inspect them before accepting them. Recalculate percentages when the underlying counts are available. Check whether the AI rounded a figure, changed a denominator or combined results from different years.
- Find the table or methodology section, not just a press-release sentence.
- Confirm whether the number is a count, rate, average, median, estimate or forecast.
- Look for margins of error, confidence intervals, missing data and exclusions.
- Distinguish correlation from causation. A trend line or association does not prove that one variable produced the other.
- Check whether a “record,” “largest” or “first” claim defines the comparison set and cutoff date.
No single general accuracy percentage safely describes fact-checking of AI-generated information. NIST publishes evaluations of generative-AI systems and detectors, but each number belongs to the exact task, dataset and evaluation conditions reported. Do not turn one test result into a universal detector or model-accuracy claim.
Checking quotations, summaries and causal claims
Quotations
Locate the transcript, recording, book, filing or official statement. Verify the exact words, speaker, date and setting. If you cannot find the primary wording, paraphrase only what a reliable source explicitly reports—or remove the quotation marks and the attribution.

Summaries
Compare the summary with the source’s abstract, introduction, results and limitations. AI systems often compress a conditional finding into an absolute one or present a proposal as a completed action. Preserve qualifiers such as “in this sample,” “may,” “was associated with” and “the authors report.”
Causal explanations
Ask what design could establish causation. Randomized experiments, natural experiments, longitudinal studies and mechanistic evidence answer different questions. If the source is observational, write an association claim unless the authors justify a stronger inference.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesEvidence hierarchy: match the source to the claim
| Claim type | Prefer first | Use secondary material for |
|---|---|---|
| Law, regulation or official requirement | Current statute, regulation, court or agency publication | Plain-language explanation and context |
| Scientific result | Original paper, dataset, protocol and corrections | Independent expert interpretation |
| Public statistic | Official statistical release and methodology | Reporting that explains significance |
| Historical event | Contemporaneous records and reputable archives | Scholarly synthesis |
| Technical specification | Current vendor or standards documentation | Independent testing and practical explanation |
“Primary” does not mean automatically correct. A government page can contain an error, a study can be retracted and a company document can describe only its own product. Evaluate the source’s method, incentives, update history and agreement with independent evidence.
Provenance, metadata and AI detectors: what they can and cannot tell you
Provenance systems, content credentials and metadata can record origin, editing history or a declared generation process. Those signals may help you understand where a file came from, but they do not prove that its text is accurate, that its image shows what it claims, or that an unmarked file is human-made.
NIST’s 2024 transparency report describes origin and history information as potentially useful to trustworthiness while explicitly warning that transparency is not a guarantee. Metadata can be stripped, copied or attached to misleading content; absence of metadata is not proof of fabrication.
Automated AI detectors have a narrower role. NIST’s 2024 NIST GenAI (Pilot Study): Text-to-Text Evaluation Overview and Results distinguishes detection and evaluation categories rather than offering a universal claim-verification score. A detector output should never be presented as proof that a statement is true, false, human-authored or machine-authored. If the question is factual accuracy, read and verify the evidence.

A risk-based checking plan
| Risk level | Typical example | Minimum verification | Escalation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Low | Background explanation for a personal note | Extract claims, verify the main source and check date and scope | Ask a specialist if the wording will be reused publicly or challenged |
| Medium | Published technology comparison or business report | Verify every number and quotation against primary evidence; read laterally | Have an editor or subject-matter reviewer inspect consequential claims |
| High | Medical, legal, financial, safety or identity decision | Use current authoritative material, document versions and limitations | Obtain qualified professional review; do not rely on the AI answer alone |
NIST’s AI Risk Management Framework and its Generative AI Profile provide a risk-management context for identifying and addressing harms. They are not a replacement for domain-specific standards or professional judgment, but they support the principle that review intensity should reflect potential impact.

A verification record you can reuse
Keeping a compact audit trail prevents a later rewrite from disconnecting a sentence from the evidence that justified it. Store one record per claim:
Claim:
Source title and author:
Publisher or issuing body:
Publication, update, edition or version date:
Original location checked:
Relevant passage, table or page:
Population, geography and time period:
Limitations and qualifications:
Independent source checked:
Decision: use, qualify, replace or omit
Date verified:
For collaborative work, preserve the source file or archived record according to your organization’s rules. Do not retain personal or confidential information merely to document a citation.
Common failure modes and fixes
| Failure mode | Why it fails | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| A plausible citation returns no record | The title, author, DOI or URL may be fabricated or mistyped | Search the title and author independently; remove it if no authoritative record exists |
| The source exists but says something narrower | The AI generalized a sample, caveat or finding | Rewrite to the source’s population, method and wording |
| Trusting a search snippet | Snippets omit context and can be stale | Open the source and read the relevant passage |
| Counting repeated articles as corroboration | Many pages may copy one press release or unsourced claim | Trace each report to its primary evidence and seek genuinely independent sources |
| Using an outdated page for a current rule | Policies and specifications change | Find the latest official version and state the date and jurisdiction |
| Using a detector score as a truth test | Authorship resemblance is not factual validation | Verify the underlying claim and source instead |
| Searching only for confirmation | Selective evidence hides corrections and counterexamples | Search for criticism, retractions, contradictory findings and independent analysis |
| Keeping an unverified detail because it sounds useful | Specificity can create false confidence | Omit it or label the uncertainty plainly |
When you should omit or qualify an AI-generated claim
Omit a claim when the source cannot be found, the quotation cannot be authenticated, the evidence does not support the wording, or the material limitation would make the sentence misleading. Qualify it when the evidence is real but narrower than the proposed statement: name the population, date, jurisdiction and uncertainty in the same sentence.
“Verification not possible” is a valid editorial outcome. It is safer than citing a plausible reference that a reader cannot locate or defending a number whose denominator you never checked.
Further reading for verification practice
Verified: How to Think Straight, Get Duped Less, and Make Better Decisions about What to Believe Online, by Mike Caulfield and Sam Wineburg, is a practical introduction to online verification, including SIFT and lateral reading. Stanford Social Media Lab’s digital-literacy guidance explains lateral reading. NIST’s transparency report, GenAI evaluation program and AI Risk Management Framework provide technical and governance context, while UNESCO’s 2023 guidance addresses human-centered validation in education and research.
The essential rule
Before citing AI-generated information, verify the claim—not merely the prose. Confirm that the source exists, read the original evidence, test the wording against context and independent sources, and scale human review to the consequences of error. If you cannot support the sentence after those checks, do not cite it.
