How do I fact-check AI-generated content before publishing?
Use a claim-by-claim review. A paragraph can sound confident and still contain an invented quotation, an outdated figure, or a true fact presented without an important qualification. Break the draft into assertions that can be checked independently, then match each one to evidence suited to that claim.

1. Inventory the claims
Mark factual assertions, dates, figures, quotations, attributions, named entities, causal claims, and descriptions of images or audio. Split compound sentences when they make multiple claims. For example, a sentence saying a product launched in a certain year, costs a stated amount, and is available in a particular country contains three checks—not one.

Prefer primary material appropriate to the subject: official documents or datasets, original research, direct statements, and first-hand records. An AI response, search-result snippet, or several websites repeating the same assertion is not a substitute for the underlying evidence. The best source depends on the claim and the consequences of getting it wrong.

3. Compare the wording with the evidence
Read enough of the source to check its date, scope, definitions, geography, and qualifications. NIST describes three useful dimensions for reviewing citation quality: faithfulness (whether the source supports the claim), completeness (whether the wording preserves the source’s full message), and sufficiency (whether the evidence is strong enough for the claim). NIST’s ongoing evaluation-probe project, updated May 5, 2026, describes checks against a human-curated reference corpus and these citation-quality dimensions: NIST: Building Evaluation Probes into Agentic AI.
4. Preserve an audit trail
Record each claim alongside the source title and URL, its publication date or version, the relevant passage or table, the review decision, and any remaining caveat. This lets another editor retrace the reasoning instead of relying on an unexplained approval. NIST identifies machine-readable records linking decisions to supporting documents as one way to make factual grounding inspectable.

5. Recheck facts that can change
Reverify prices, policies, product capabilities, laws, schedules, and other volatile facts close to publication. Include a date, jurisdiction, edition, or version in the copy when it changes how readers should interpret the statement.
6. Audit citations and quotations before release
Check that every material factual statement has support, the linked source actually supports the published wording, quotations match the original, numbers match the source and year, and no important caveat disappeared during editing. If a claim cannot meet the publication’s evidence standard, seek better support, narrow it with clear attribution, or omit it.

Can AI detectors tell me whether an article is accurate?
No. Detection tools estimate whether content may have been generated by AI; they do not establish whether its claims are true. NIST’s June 2025 report on its 2024 text-to-text pilot distinguishes detector benchmarking from factuality assessment and discusses constraints on detection methods: NIST AI 700-1: 2024 NIST GenAI (Pilot Study): Text-to-Text Evaluation Overview and Results. A detector score is not evidence for or against a factual statement, so the claims still need human-led verification.
How do I verify an AI-generated image or audio clip?
Check provenance and check truth as separate questions. Provenance evidence may indicate something about a file’s origin or modification history; it cannot by itself establish that the depicted event happened as claimed. Preserve the original file where possible, check available credentials or supported provenance signals, and document transformations. Then independently verify the subject, date, place, and context using evidence appropriate to the claim.
What an OpenAI provenance result can and cannot tell you
OpenAI’s current Help Center guidance describes supported image and audio provenance checks. A positive result indicates a supported signal associated with OpenAI; it does not certify accuracy, lack of editing, legal ownership, or correct context. A negative result is inconclusive: a signal may be absent, unsupported, stripped, or degraded. Supported modalities and availability can change, so consult the current guidance before relying on a check: OpenAI Help Center: C2PA in ChatGPT.
What Content Credentials establish
C2PA Content Credentials can help establish media origin and modification history. When validated, they make changes to credentialed assets tamper-evident; they do not prove that the content’s claims are true. The standard is a complement to fact-checking, not a replacement. Credentials are optional, so their absence does not show that a file is false or untrustworthy. See the C2PA specification explainer, version 2.2.

What should I do when an AI-generated claim has no source?
Do not publish it as established fact just because the generated text sounds plausible or a detector gives it a score. Look for suitable original evidence. If none supports the wording, either remove the claim or rewrite it narrowly with clear attribution and any necessary qualification. Keep the unresolved point in the editorial record so it is not accidentally restored later.
Which verification aid should I use?
Choose a tool for the question it can actually answer. Claim-to-source review tests factual support; an AI detector addresses likely authorship; provenance checks address signals about media origin or file history. They are not interchangeable truth tests. When assessing any aid, consider whether its evidence is independently inspectable, whether it preserves context and an audit trail, whether it covers the relevant content type and file, and how it reports uncertainty or unsupported cases.
Does fact-checking AI content create disclosure obligations?
Verification and disclosure are separate editorial questions. Requirements can depend on jurisdiction and content type; no single rule can be stated here without knowing where and what you plan to publish. Check the rules that apply to your publication and subject, in addition to verifying the claims themselves.
