Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo extract a table from a PDF, first check whether its text is selectable, then choose a method suited to the layout: line detection for ruled tables, text alignment or whitespace for borderless tables, and OCR plus table-structure recognition for scans. Treat the output as a draft: PDF software often has to infer rows and cells from positioned text and drawn lines rather than read table structure stored in the file.
Why PDF tables are difficult to extract
A PDF can store text as individually positioned characters and draw lines as separate graphics, without identifying a table’s rows, columns, or cells. Extraction software therefore has to estimate where the table starts and ends, infer its grid from rules or text alignment, and assign words to cells using their page coordinates. A table that looks obvious to a person can remain ambiguous to a parser.

Borderless layouts, uneven spacing, merged cells, faint rules, and pages whose layouts change from one to the next can all complicate that reconstruction. Not every PDF lacks semantic structure, but visual appearance alone does not guarantee that a parser can read the table as a clean grid.

| Method | Good starting point | Tradeoffs |
|---|---|---|
| Camelot Stream | Text-based tables with whitespace-separated columns | Infers rows and columns from text placement and alignment, so settings may need tuning. |
| Camelot Lattice | Text-based tables with visible grid rules | Uses lines and intersections to infer cells. Faint or incomplete rules can make detection harder; current documentation describes combined vector and raster detection. |
| Camelot Network or Hybrid | Tables with repeated text alignment, including some mixed layouts | Depends on text boxes and layout patterns; results vary by document. |
| Camelot ML, documented in version 2.0.0 | Dense borderless tables and scans when OCR is configured | Optional neural backend with additional dependencies; the project reports slower runtime than its heuristic parsers. |
| pdfplumber | Inspecting PDF objects and tuning table detection on machine-generated PDFs | Does not provide OCR and says it lacks strong support for extracting tables from OCRed documents. |
| Amazon Textract | Hosted table analysis, including multipage PDF workloads | Requires cloud integration and service setup. Merged or irregular cells can yield inconsistent results, and confidence scores need judgment. |
The underlying approaches explain why no single parser fits every file. Camelot’s parser documentation describes Stream grouping text into rows and estimating columns from whitespace and word alignment; Lattice detecting rules and their intersections; Network finding repeated text-box alignments; and Hybrid combining alignment with line-derived boundaries. pdfplumber also builds table structures from explicit lines or alignment-implied lines. For scans, Camelot’s advanced documentation describes an optional ML-based structure-recognition and OCR route.

Follow a five-step extraction workflow
-
Check whether the text is selectable
Try selecting a word in the table. If you can select the text, a text-based parser can use the PDF text layer. If the page is just an image, plan for OCR and table-structure recognition instead. Camelot’s current FAQ and its version 2.0.0 documentation describe different capabilities: the current documentation includes an optional OCR route, so do not apply the older FAQ’s text-only limitation as a blanket statement. Check your installed version and optional dependencies.
-
Classify the table’s layout
Look for visible grid lines, columns separated by whitespace, multiple tables on the same page, merged headers, rotated text, or tables spanning pages. These details affect which boundaries a parser can infer and how its output should be checked.

Start with the matching parser
For a text-based table with clear rules, try a line-oriented method such as Camelot Lattice. For a borderless text table, try Stream or another alignment-based approach. For a scan, use a supported OCR and structure-recognition path; Camelot 2.0.0 documents
flavor='ml'as an optional Table Transformer route and notes that it adds PyTorch and OCR dependencies as needed. See the Camelot setup and advanced options before relying on that route.PC Slower Than It Used to Be?

Inspect the detected table region
A successful return from a library does not establish that the right table—or the whole table—was captured. Check the detected boundary and compare the header and first and last rows with the page. If the extraction includes surrounding text or misses cells, refine the crop, table region, or detection settings. pdfplumber provides table-debugging tools and page cropping; Camelot provides configurable extraction and filtering options in its advanced documentation.

Validate values and structure
Compare representative cells against the rendered page. Check that headers are assigned to the right columns, rows and columns stay aligned, merged cells have not shifted neighboring values, and expected cells are present. If the document gives totals or a known row count, reconcile them against the extracted data. For consequential work, use human review and interpret confidence scores according to the cost of an error. AWS notes that merged and irregular cells can produce inconsistent results in its Textract table documentation.
When local parsing or a hosted service makes sense
Local Python libraries such as Camelot and pdfplumber expose parser settings and table geometry, which is useful when you need to inspect or tune how a particular page is interpreted. A hosted service such as Amazon Textract can return table and cell relationships and supports asynchronous processing for multipage PDF workloads, as described in the Textract asynchronous processing documentation.

What benchmark numbers can—and cannot—tell you
The Camelot project’s comparison page, refreshed against current releases in 2026, reports F1 scores of 0.750 for ML, 0.725 for Network, and 0.658 for Hybrid on 545 financial PDFs in FinTabNet.c. It also reports TEDS values of 0.371, 0.200, and 0.198 respectively, while describing its TEDS measure as a cell-text proxy rather than exact tree-edit distance.
