OCR can read text in a Google search-results screenshot, but it cannot assign rankings by itself. To extract positions reliably, use OCR that returns word coordinates, group related text into result blocks, decide which result types count, then order eligible blocks down the main results column. Save the screenshot’s query, time, locale, and viewport with the result: a position describes that captured page, not a universal Google ranking.
What counts as a ranking position?
Before processing screenshots, write down the counting rule. A Google results page can contain text results, ads, local or map results, featured results, image packs, and other modules. Google’s visual-elements guide describes text results as potentially containing attribution, a title link, and a snippet, with optional elements such as sitelinks or rich attributes. Not every result has every element, and layouts can differ by device, query, or language. See Google’s visual elements gallery.

A practical convention for an organic position count is to count eligible organic result blocks in the main results column, excluding ads and non-organic modules. But there is no single convention imposed by the OCR tools or Google’s visual guide. State explicitly whether and how your analysis treats ads, maps, featured results, images, and other modules. If the intended metric is a different kind of visibility, define that separately rather than silently mixing it into an organic count.
Keep the screenshot and its context together
Google says results can vary with factors including location, language, and device; the query and the page’s visible features also matter. Record the context alongside each screenshot so later analysis can be reproduced and interpreted:

- Exact search query and capture timestamp.
- Viewport dimensions or device preset, and whether the screenshot is full-page.
- Country or location and interface language, where known.
- Known session, personalization, or other capture context that may affect the page.
- The original screenshot file and the extraction-rule version used to count positions.
Google’s documentation on ranking and result variation and its visual-elements guide explain why a rank from a single screenshot should be reported as a capture-specific observation.
Choose OCR that preserves geometry
Use an OCR output that includes word-level bounding boxes or structural layout, not just a plain text string. Coordinates preserve where recognized words appeared, which is essential for reconstructing rows and distinguishing nearby page modules.

Google Cloud Vision
Cloud Vision documents TEXT_DETECTION for extracting image text with word bounding boxes, and DOCUMENT_TEXT_DETECTION for dense text with structure such as pages, blocks, paragraphs, words, and breaks. Its documentation says the JSON includes the extracted string, individual words, and their bounding boxes: Cloud Vision OCR documentation. The documentation does not establish which feature is more accurate on Google SERP screenshots; test both on a hand-labeled sample if choosing between them.

Tesseract
Tesseract is an open-source OCR engine usable from the command line or an API, making it an option for local processing. Its documentation does not establish its comparative performance on SERP screenshots. Choose between local and hosted processing based on requirements such as data handling, languages, integration effort, and scale, then compare actual extraction and grouping errors on your own labeled captures.

Turn OCR output into ranked result blocks
- Normalize coordinates. Convert OCR boxes to a shared pixel or normalized coordinate system so screenshots with different dimensions can use the same grouping logic.
- Group words into lines. Cluster boxes that are close vertically and align horizontally, allowing for small baseline differences. Keep a line’s text and bounds together rather than treating every OCR token as a separate result.
- Separate page regions. Use horizontal position, alignment, and spacing to identify the main results column and distinguish side panels, multiple columns, and separate SERP modules. Avoid sorting every recognized box on the whole screen as though it belonged to one list.
- Propose candidate blocks. Look for combinations of title-like text, visible domain or attribution, and snippet text whose boxes are near one another. Sitelinks and rich attributes may belong to a parent result; do not count each as a separate result merely because OCR found more lines. Google’s visual guide describes these variable elements but does not supply an OCR classifier.
- Apply the written counting rule. Classify each candidate as eligible or excluded under the chosen convention. Mark uncertain ads or feature modules for review instead of assuming they are organic entries.
- Order eligible blocks. Sort by vertical location within the main results column and assign consecutive positions. Inspect overlaps, merged blocks, and ambiguous modules rather than silently assigning them a confident rank.
The resulting position is an application-level interpretation of the screenshot, not an official Google ranking measurement. OCR reads and locates text; the grouping and counting rules determine what the reported number means.
Validate the extraction before reporting it
Create a representative set of screenshots and manually label the result blocks, classifications, and positions. Include the layout variations your workflow expects, such as different viewports or feature mixes. Compare automated output with these labels and track distinct failure types:

- Missed or misread title, domain, or snippet text.
- Incorrect grouping, such as a sitelink counted separately or text from neighboring blocks merged.
- Wrong eligibility decision for an ad or SERP feature.
- Wrong vertical ordering or a position shifted by a missed result.
- Ambiguous cases sent to manual review, and the resulting review workload.
Report accuracy only against a described, manually labeled sample and its counting convention. The cited OCR documentation does not establish an accuracy rate for this task, and there is no basis here for claiming a general SERP-screenshot OCR benchmark.

Google’s Search brand guidance places responsibility for approvals on the publisher for content shown in screenshots. It says Search screenshots may be used in print for educational and instructional purposes, while advertisements require Google approval.
