To extract only some files from a ZIP, open it in an archive utility, select the entries you need, and use that utility’s extraction command to save them to a chosen folder. If you prefer the macOS command line, bsdunzip accepts specific archive member paths. Keep the ZIP’s folder structure unless you have a reason to flatten it.
Choose a method and destination
A graphical archive manager is usually easiest when you want to browse the ZIP and select several entries visually. A command-line utility is useful when you know the exact paths or want a repeatable command. In either case, choose a destination folder deliberately; a new or otherwise known folder makes the extracted files easier to find and reduces the chance of replacing files unexpectedly.

- Graphical archive manager: Open the ZIP in an application that displays its contents as a file list, select the files or folders you want, and use its extraction command. Choose the destination and review any overwrite prompt. Controls differ between applications and versions.
- Command line: Specify the archive and the exact member paths to extract. Check the utility’s help or manual because commands and options can vary by system.
On Windows, 7-Zip supports unpacking ZIP files and provides a File Manager and Windows shell integration. Use the archive’s file listing and an explicit extraction workflow to select entries; check the labels in your installed version rather than relying on a particular button name.
Extract named files with macOS bsdunzip
The macOS 26.4 bsdunzip manual documents optional member names, -d dir for the destination, and -j to ignore paths stored in the archive. To extract two members while retaining their archive paths, use:

bsdunzip -d extracted package.zip 'docs/guide.pdf' 'images/logo.png'
Replace package.zip with the archive’s name and extracted with your destination folder. The member names must match the paths shown inside the ZIP. Quotes protect names containing spaces or shell characters that would otherwise be interpreted by the shell.
If the installed system provides the command as unzip, or its options differ, check that command’s own help or manual before using the example.

Preserve paths or flatten the output?
By default, the command above preserves the directories recorded in the archive. That is the safer choice when the folder context matters or different directories contain files with the same name.

bsdunzip -j -d extracted package.zip 'docs/guide.pdf' 'images/logo.png'
Flattening removes the directories that distinguish archive members. If two selected files share a basename, they may target the same output name. Inspect the archive listing first; retain paths when names could collide.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why Finder’s double-click is not selective extraction
Apple documents double-clicking a .zip file in Finder as a way to expand it; the expanded item appears in the same folder as the ZIP. That built-in action expands the archive as a whole. To extract only some members, use an archive utility that lets you select entries or a command such as the macOS example above.

Resolve common extraction problems
- The command says a member is missing: Compare the name and full internal path with the archive listing. Include the directories shown there and quote names with spaces or shell metacharacters.
- Files appear in unexpected subfolders: The utility is preserving paths from the ZIP. Choose a different destination or use a flattening option only after checking for duplicate basenames.
- You are extracting with 7-Zip by dragging into Explorer: 7-Zip’s FAQ explains that drag-and-drop to Explorer uses temporary files because Explorer needs decompressed files on disk before copying them to the drop target. Use 7-Zip’s explicit Extract operation to avoid that temporary-file process. See the 7-Zip FAQ.
- An overwrite or password prompt appears, or extraction fails for another archive-specific reason: Read the prompt and consult the documentation for the utility and ZIP you are using. Behavior can vary; do not assume how a particular tool handles encrypted archives, unsupported compression methods, or duplicate entries.
