To extract invoice data from PDFs into structured JSON, send each PDF to an invoice-aware document AI service, map its response into a schema your application controls, and validate important values against the original document before using them. Microsoft Azure AI Document Intelligence and AWS Textract AnalyzeExpense provide invoice-oriented extraction; Google Cloud Document AI offers generic form parsing and custom-schema extraction. Their responses are useful starting points—not automatically verified accounting records.
What the extraction pipeline should produce
Provider responses differ, so define the JSON your application needs before choosing a parser. A practical invoice record may include an invoice identifier, vendor and customer, issue and due dates, currency, subtotal, tax, total, payment terms, and an array of line items. Decide how to represent missing or ambiguous values, normalize dates and currencies, and retain the original provider response for traceability.
For example, your application might use a contract shaped like this, with field names and types adapted to your own requirements:

The official documentation describes different outputs and model approaches, but does not establish a controlled accuracy comparison among these services. Choose based on your schema, line-item needs, review evidence, layout variation, language and regional needs, cloud and data-handling requirements, file constraints, integration cost, and latency; measure performance on your own invoices.
Build the pipeline step by step

Define the target JSON contract
Specify required fields, data types, missing-value behavior, date and currency normalization, and how repeated line items are represented. Keep the raw response available so a normalized record can be traced back to the extraction result.

Select a prebuilt model or custom extraction
Start with an invoice-specific model when common invoice fields are sufficient. Consider a custom schema when your application needs fields the standard response does not capture. Google distinguishes generic Form Parser extraction from Custom Extractor schemas; Microsoft documents a prebuilt invoice model, while AWS AnalyzeExpense returns standardized expense fields and line-item groups.

Check the PDF against the selected endpoint’s constraints
Validate file type, size, page count, and password status before submission. Limits vary by service, version, and tier; do not carry a limit from one endpoint to another. Microsoft’s documentation describes PDF and TIFF inputs and notes that password-locked PDFs must be unlocked. Its general input guidance lists up to 2,000 pages for PDFs/TIFFs, an S0 file-size limit of up to 500 MB and an F0 limit of up to 4 MB, while the invoice-specific section lists PDF/TIFF processing up to 2,000 pages and a file cap below 50 MB. Because requirements are presented in different sections and can depend on version and tier, verify the limit for the endpoint you will actually use.

Map fields and preserve evidence
Translate provider-specific names into your own schema without discarding source context. AWS documents confidence, page number, geometry, and, where detected, the printed label for fields. Microsoft’s response separates recognized text, page-level results, and invoice-specific results. Retaining this evidence can help a reviewer locate a value in the PDF.

Validate values that affect payment or records
Check the invoice identifier, vendor, dates, currency, subtotal, tax, total, payment terms, and line extensions against the page or region from which each value was extracted. Route missing, low-confidence, or inconsistent fields for human review rather than treating extraction as proof of correctness. These checks are prudent pipeline design; the documented metadata does not amount to a vendor guarantee of error-free accounting.

Test representative documents and keep an audit trail
Evaluate invoices from different vendors, layouts, languages, and page counts, including scanned and digitally generated PDFs. Measure field-level results against a reviewed set from your own document mix; the cited product pages do not provide an accuracy percentage or head-to-head benchmark. For traceability, retain a source-document reference, model or processor version, extraction time, raw response, normalized record, and any corrections.
When layouts vary or fields are custom
Google Cloud Document AI separates general form understanding from schema-targeted extraction. Form Parser returns generic keys, values, tables, and selection marks without a user-defined field schema; the documentation says it supports up to 11 generic entities. Custom Extractor lets you define target entities and offers foundation, custom-model-based, and template-based approaches. Google recommends starting with a foundation model for variable layouts. Its documented training-document guidance says zero- to few-shot foundation-model prediction can use up to five labeled documents, while fine-tuned prediction uses more than ten; these are product guidance figures, not accuracy guarantees. Template approaches are intended for fixed layouts, while fine-tuning and document needs depend on layout variability.

A custom approach is useful when standard invoice fields omit business-specific data, but it does not remove the need to define missing-value behavior, verify extracted amounts, or test the model on documents representative of your actual workflow.
Check language, limits, and deployment fit
Before committing to a provider, confirm the exact processor or model, API version, region, language coverage, page and file limits, and output details for your deployment. Microsoft’s current invoice-model documentation lists 27 languages; treat that as the documented capability of that model, not a claim about every service or version. Its page also identifies v4.0 as GA and API version 2024-11-30. Verify current endpoint requirements rather than assuming limits from a different tier or API version apply.
Also evaluate where documents are processed and stored, whether the service and region meet your organization’s data-handling requirements, and the operational cost and latency for expected volume. The cited documentation establishes extraction behavior and product constraints, not a complete security, retention, or cost assessment for your particular deployment.
