A power-saving setting can improve runtime on the current charge, but it cannot restore capacity a battery has lost with age. Apple distinguishes “battery life”—how long a device runs before it needs recharging—from “battery lifespan,” how long the battery lasts before replacement is needed.
Start by finding what is draining the battery
Check battery use by app before changing several settings at once. This helps distinguish an unusually active app from ordinary heavy use such as gaming, video streaming, or navigation. On Pixel phones, Google recommends reviewing Battery usage by app; Windows also provides per-app battery-use information. Menu names vary by device and software version.

- On a Pixel: Open Settings and review the battery usage breakdown by app. Google’s Pixel battery guidance explains how to identify apps using charge.
- On Windows: Open Settings and look for battery usage by app in the Battery or Power settings. Microsoft’s Windows battery tips describe the available checks; the exact path can vary between Windows versions and PCs.
If one app stands out, reduce its background activity or change how often it syncs, if those controls are available. Avoid restricting every app indiscriminately: background limits can delay notifications or updates, and the benefit depends on what was draining power.

The display is a practical place to start because lower brightness and less time with the screen on reduce power use. Set brightness to a comfortable lower level, enable automatic brightness if it suits your device, and shorten the screen timeout. If your laptop offers a lower refresh rate, using it can also reduce power consumption.

iPhone and iPad
Turn on Low Power Mode when you need extra runtime. Apple’s current guidance places it at Settings > Battery > Power Mode, though labels and availability can differ by device and software version. Low Power Mode reduces power use by limiting or disabling activities such as Mail fetch, Hey Siri, Background App Refresh, and some visual effects. MacBook
Review the Energy Saver or battery-related settings available on your Mac and use a less demanding power mode when running on battery. Apple says MacBook dims its display and uses components sparingly on battery power; choosing maximum performance can drain the battery faster. Settings panels vary across Mac models and macOS versions, so follow the options shown on your device. Apple describes them in Batteries – Maximizing Performance.

Windows laptop
Turn on Battery Saver when you want to conserve charge. Microsoft says it temporarily limits some power-consuming activities, including automatic email and calendar syncing, live tiles, and apps not in active use. Pair it with lower brightness, shorter screen and sleep periods, and an efficient power mode if your PC offers one. Some options depend on the hardware and manufacturer; Windows 11 menus may differ from the Windows 10 directions on Microsoft’s support page. See Microsoft’s battery-saving tips for Windows.
Android phones
On Pixel phones, leave Adaptive Battery and app battery optimization enabled unless you have a reason to change them. Google says Adaptive Battery limits how less-used apps run in the background, but this can mean delayed notifications or reduced performance. Other Android manufacturers may use different names and menus. Google’s Pixel battery-life guidance covers these settings.

Turn off demanding features when you do not need them
Hotspot use, sustained navigation, video streaming, and games can consume substantial power. You do not need to disable connectivity or stop using these features all the time; turn them off when they are no longer useful, especially when you are away from a charger. Google specifically lists hotspot use and demanding activities among ways to conserve Pixel charge in its Pixel battery guidance and Pixel battery-drain troubleshooting guidance.
Keep heat in check
Heat can increase immediate battery drain and harm battery health. Google notes that a hot Pixel battery drains faster and that heat can damage it. Avoid leaving a phone or laptop in avoidably hot conditions, and use devices within their ordinary operating conditions. If a device becomes unusually hot during normal use, check which app or task is active and consult the manufacturer’s support guidance rather than treating heat as a reason to buy an unverified accessory.

Choose charging settings based on how you use the device
Charging optimization is mainly about battery lifespan, not squeezing more runtime out of today’s charge. On Pixel 6a and later, Google offers an 80% charging limit and Adaptive Charging. The 80% limit leaves less charge available for the day in exchange for prioritizing lifespan, so it suits people who usually finish the day with charge remaining; turn it off when you need the full daily capacity. Adaptive Charging learns charging habits and completes the charge closer to the usual unplug time. Availability and behavior are model-specific; see Google’s Pixel battery guidance.

This is long-term storage advice, not a daily charging target. Apple warns that storing a battery fully discharged can leave it unable to hold charge, while storing it fully charged can contribute to capacity loss. Allow for updates, then check battery condition
On Pixel phones, Google says temporary extra drain for a few days after a software update can be normal, and Adaptive Battery may take a few weeks to settle after setup or a factory reset. If battery life remains poor after that period and after you have checked app use and settings, consult the device maker’s diagnostics and service information.
Battery health is a separate question from current power use. On iPhone, check Battery Health in Settings; the menu varies by model. If capacity has declined, Low Power Mode and other settings may help the phone run longer between charges, but they do not reverse that loss. Google likewise describes lithium-ion batteries as consumables with limited cycles and provides model-specific replacement guidance for Pixel devices. See Google’s Pixel battery-drain guidance.
A practical order of operations
- Check battery usage by app and identify a specific app or activity using more power than expected.
- Lower screen brightness, shorten screen timeout, and enable the built-in Battery Saver or Low Power Mode when extra runtime matters.
- Limit background activity for apps you identified, and switch off hotspot, navigation, or other demanding features when you are not using them.
- If the problem started after an update, allow the manufacturer’s stated optimization period where applicable; if it continues, check battery diagnostics and service guidance.
- Use an available charging limit or charging optimization only if its lifespan trade-off fits your typical day.
These steps are not guaranteed to add a particular number of hours: results depend on the device, battery condition, settings, and workload. Microsoft reports that Edge lasted 36–53% longer per charge than Chrome, Firefox, or Opera in its browsing tests on Windows 10. Microsoft does not state the test year on the cited support page, and the result should not be generalized to current Windows versions, other browser versions, or workloads beyond those tests.
