To extend an HDMI setup, first measure the route and check the resolution, refresh rate, and features your devices need. A suitably certified HDMI cable can work for a cable-length run; for a longer route, a transmitter-and-receiver extender kit can carry the signal over Cat5e or Cat6. Neither option is always cheaper, and the right choice depends on the exact cable or kit.
How can you extend an HDMI connection?
There are two practical paths: run an HDMI cable that supports the required signal over your route, or use an HDMI extender system with a transmitter, receiver, and category cable between them. The HDMI specification does not set one universal maximum cable length. HDMI Licensing Administrator says, “The specification does not indicate a cable length. Cable length depends on many factors including cable type and construction.” Read its cable guidance.

Before choosing, measure the actual path the cable must follow—not just the straight-line distance—and note the source and display’s required video mode and features. Also consider whether category cable can be routed through the space and whether you need power delivery, infrared control, or other control connections.

When is an HDMI cable the simpler choice?
Choose a direct HDMI cable when its construction and certification suit the signal your devices require and the cable can cover the route. Certification is a useful verification cue, but select the tier that matches the devices rather than assuming every certified cable supports every feature.

- 4K HDMI Extender: The OREI EX-170C is a reliable 4K HDMI over Ethernet extender that transmits uncompressed video and audio up to 230 ft (70 m) at 1080P or 131 ft (40 m) at 4K@30Hz over a single CAT5e/6/7 cable, reducing the need for long HDMI cable runs
- Smooth 4K Video: This HDMI extender uses reliable video transmission technology to support resolutions up to 4K@30Hz (NOT 4K@60Hz) and 1080p over long distances, with 10.2 Gbps bandwidth, HDMI 1.4, and HDCP 1.4; HDMI loop out enables local display monitoring while extending content to a remote screen; EDID copy helps optimize display compatibility
- Easy Remote Control: This HDMI over CAT6 extender supports one-way IR pass-through, allowing control of Blu-ray players, streaming devices, media players, and set-top boxes from the receiver location; one-way Power over Cable (PoC) requires only one power adapter at the transmitter for a cleaner installation
- Wide Device Compatibility: Works with TVs, monitors, projectors, gaming consoles, media players, AV receivers, and CCTV systems; helps maintain stable HDMI signals where intermittent signal issues may occur; ideal for 4K CCTV extension over long distances, home theaters, conference rooms, classrooms, digital signage, and presentations; not compatible with HDMI ARC
- What You Get: HDMI transmitter and receiver, IR blaster cable, IR receiver cable, 12 V power adapter and user manual; durable metal housing supports dependable operation; use a direct CAT5e or CAT6 cable connection for optimal performance and avoid network switches or routers; Performance depends on cable and devices. Not IP/network based
Match certification to the video requirements
HDMI Licensing Administrator describes Premium High Speed HDMI Cable certification as testing for full 18 Gbps bandwidth with EMI testing. It is intended for 4K/Ultra HD use cases that include 4K60, HDR, and expanded color. This is a particular certification category, not a guarantee that a cable of any length or construction will work in every setup. Check the cable’s certification label and your devices’ required features. See the Premium HDMI Cable certification information.
For a longer cable run, the result depends on cable type and construction. If the required signal is unreliable over a cable you are considering, a category-cable extender may be a better fit than simply buying a longer cable.

When should you use a Cat5e/Cat6 HDMI extender?
An extender kit is a system, usually made up of a transmitter near the source and a receiver near the display. It carries the HDMI signal over the category cable specified by the manufacturer. This does not mean you can connect the kit to any Ethernet network, router, or LAN socket; follow the exact kit’s wiring instructions and compatibility requirements.
Supported distance can change with the video mode and the model. For example, StarTech specifies its 4K70IC-EXTEND-HDMI for 4K60 (4:4:4) up to 70 m over one Cat5e/6 cable. Its product page also lists HDMI 2.0, HDR, HDCP 2.2, power over cable (PoC), and IR extension. These are claims for that specific model, not a general capability of HDMI extenders. Check the manufacturer’s 4K70IC-EXTEND-HDMI specifications.

A different StarTech model, EXTEND-HDMI-4K40C6P1, is specified for 4K30 up to 40 m or 1080p up to 70 m over Cat5e/6. The difference is a reminder to check the distance for the mode you will actually use, rather than relying on a product’s longest advertised distance. See the EXTEND-HDMI-4K40C6P1 specifications.
Account for power and control
Some kits include useful installation features, but they are model-specific. The 4K70IC-EXTEND-HDMI listing includes PoC and IR extension. Leviton’s 41910-HT0 HDBaseT transmitter/receiver system is specified for 70 m over category-rated cable and lists bidirectional power and IR, multichannel audio, and RS-232 control. These details may matter in an installation where local power or remote control is part of the problem; verify what the exact kit supports and how it must be connected. See Leviton’s 41910-HT0 product information.

Which option fits your setup?
| What to check | HDMI cable | Cat5e/Cat6 extender kit |
|---|---|---|
| Route and distance | Use a cable whose type and construction suit the required run; HDMI does not specify one universal length limit. | Check the exact model’s distance limit for your resolution and mode. |
| Video requirements | Match the cable’s certification and capabilities to the source and display. | Confirm the kit supports the exact resolution, refresh rate, color format, and other needed features. |
| What runs between devices | One HDMI cable. | A transmitter and receiver connected using the category cable specified by the kit; it is not an ordinary LAN connection. |
| Power and control | Check the particular cable and setup if additional capabilities are needed. | Check whether the particular kit offers features such as PoC, IR, or RS-232. |
| Cost | No universal price advantage is established; compare the actual cable and installation costs. | No universal price advantage is established; include the kit and category cable in your comparison. |
What to check before buying
- Measure the route. Include the distance around corners and through any conduit or wall path, and make sure the route can accommodate the cable type you plan to use.
- Write down the required signal. Check both devices for the resolution, refresh rate, HDR, color format, and other HDMI features you need at the display.
- Choose the cable path or extender system. For a direct run, verify the cable’s certification and suitability for the length. For a longer route, choose a transmitter/receiver kit whose specifications cover the required mode and distance.
- Check installation details. Confirm the permitted category cable, wiring, power requirements, and any needed IR or control support in the exact product documentation.
- Compare the whole setup cost. Include the cable or extender kit and any category cable required. The available specifications do not establish that one approach is always the budget option.
What the published distance figures do—and do not—tell you
The listed 70 m and 40 m figures above are manufacturer specifications for named products and modes, not independent comparative test results. They are useful for screening a model, but they do not establish what every extender will achieve in a different installation. Confirm the product’s current requirements and compatibility with your equipment before committing to a route.
