For long outings, carry a charged battery specifically made for the X4 Air. Insta360’s published runtimes are useful planning estimates, not guarantees for every shooting situation.
A reliable battery plan combines settings, shooting habits, charging opportunities and a backup battery. No single adjustment eliminates the power demands of 360-degree recording, especially at 8K. The goal is to avoid wasting charge while the camera is idle and to have a safe way to continue when the installed battery is depleted.

Start with the setting Insta360 recommends
The X4 Air User Manual recommends shortening the screen timeout to reduce power use and extend battery life. The setting is called Screen Auto Sleep; the manual does not state how many extra minutes a shorter timeout provides.
- Open the camera’s Shortcut Menu.
- Go to Settings > Screen Auto Sleep.
- Choose a shorter timeout duration than the one currently selected.
This changes how soon the screen sleeps when it is not being used. It does not mean the camera stops recording when the screen sleeps. Insta360 notes that 8K processing uses substantial power and may warm the camera, so screen timeout is a useful adjustment—but not a way to eliminate the demands of a high-resolution recording mode.

Use the shortest timeout that still suits the way you work. If you frequently check framing or settings between clips, an extremely short timeout may require you to wake the display more often. If the camera is mounted and recording without supervision, a shorter timeout is generally easier to use because the display is not being left active unnecessarily. The manual supports the adjustment itself, but it does not provide a percentage saving, a number of saved minutes, or a test result for one timeout value versus another.
Understand what consumes the battery
Battery duration is not one fixed specification. It changes with the recording mode, frame rate, operating conditions, settings, battery condition and how long the camera remains powered between shots. Two people can use the same X4 Air on the same day and see different results if one records continuously while the other repeatedly wakes the camera, reviews clips or leaves the display active.
The most useful distinction is between recording power and idle power. Recording at a demanding resolution requires sustained processing, while an unused but powered-on camera still consumes charge. A shorter Screen Auto Sleep setting addresses display activity; powering down during a long pause addresses the broader cost of leaving the camera on. Neither adjustment changes the camera’s published operating specifications, and neither should be presented as a guaranteed number of extra minutes.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Use runtime figures to plan, not to predict exactly
Insta360’s current X4 Air hardware specifications list approximate runtimes for two modes. Both figures were measured at 77°F (25°C), in 360 mode, with the camera powered on and screen off, Wi-Fi on, standard bitrate, and standard color. Insta360 cautions that actual battery life may vary. These are manufacturer figures, not independent test results.
| Recording mode | Approximate published runtime | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| 8K at 30 fps | About 88 minutes | A planning estimate under the specified test conditions; higher resolution and frame rate may be important for the intended footage. |
| 6K at 24 fps | About 105 minutes | A planning estimate under the same test conditions; consider it if this resolution and frame rate meet the project’s needs. |
The two figures show that runtime differs between these tested modes, but they do not establish a precise battery-life gain for every setting or recording situation. If you are deciding between modes, choose based on the output you need first, then use the matching manufacturer estimate as a rough guide. Do not assume the figures will match a shoot with different conditions, settings, or device condition.
The difference between approximately 88 minutes at 8K30 and approximately 105 minutes at 6K24 is useful for scheduling, not a promise that every 6K24 shoot will last 17 minutes longer. The test conditions matter: the screen was off, Wi-Fi was on, bitrate and color were standard, and the camera was operating in 360 mode at 77°F. A different temperature, a different workflow or a different camera state can change the result.
Plan with a margin rather than scheduling a shot to end exactly at the published limit. If an important take needs to run for most of an hour, allow time for setup, retakes and the possibility that your field conditions differ from the specification test. The figures can tell you whether one battery is in the right general range; they cannot tell you the exact stop time for your particular project.
Match the capture mode to the job
Resolution and frame rate are creative choices as well as battery-planning choices. Use 8K30 when the additional detail and 30-frame-per-second motion are necessary for the final output. If 6K24 meets the project’s delivery and reframing needs, its published estimate is longer and may make scheduling easier.

Do not select 6K24 solely because it has a longer number in the table if your project requires 8K. Conversely, do not default to 8K for every clip when the intended output does not need it. Decide what the footage must deliver, then compare the corresponding manufacturer estimate with the length of the outing. The available figures do not support a precise runtime table for every other resolution, frame rate or mode, so avoid extrapolating a savings percentage.
For a mixed shoot, identify which moments genuinely require the higher mode and reserve that mode for them. Use the mode that satisfies the rest of the project when appropriate. This is a planning approach, not a claim that switching modes produces a fixed amount of extra battery life.
Turn the camera off during longer pauses
If the camera will be sitting unused between shots, turn it off rather than leaving it powered on. The manual describes turning the X4 Air off by pressing and holding the power button for two seconds. This is practical battery-saving advice, but Insta360’s reviewed materials do not quantify how much runtime it adds.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Finish the current shot and stop recording.
- Press and hold the power button for two seconds to turn off the camera.
- Power it back on when you are ready to shoot again.
For a brief pause, consider whether the convenience of leaving the camera ready outweighs conserving charge. For a longer gap, powering down avoids leaving it on unnecessarily. Build the action into your routine: stop the clip, confirm that recording has ended, hold the power button for two seconds, and check the camera before placing it in a bag or moving to another location.
Powering down is especially useful during transport, meals, location changes or long waits between setups. It is not a substitute for a spare battery, and it does not prove that a specific number of minutes has been recovered. It simply prevents an avoidable period of powered-on use.
Keep the display from working when you do not need it
Screen Auto Sleep is the documented display-related adjustment. Use it alongside a deliberate shooting routine. Wake the display when you need to change a setting or check the camera, then let it sleep again rather than keeping a menu or preview visible throughout a wait.
The published runtime test already specifies that the screen was off. That means the 88-minute and 105-minute figures should not be read as a guarantee for a shoot in which the display remains active continuously. They also should not be used to calculate exactly how much a particular screen timeout saves. Insta360 gives the recommendation, but not a measured gain.
Choose the right way to keep shooting
A spare battery and a charger solve different problems. A charged spare can provide another shooting cycle after the installed battery runs down. A USB-C charger replenishes the battery between sessions; the published charge-time figures do not establish that recording while connected extends runtime.

| Charged spare battery | Adds another battery-powered shooting cycle; swap it in when the installed battery is depleted. | Use a battery specifically designed for X4 Air. Insta360 warns against unofficial batteries. |
| USB-C charging between sessions | Replenishes the battery so it is ready for a later session. | Insta360 Support lists about 36 minutes to 80% and about 57 minutes to 100% using a 9V/3A adapter. |
For a long day, a model-specific spare is the direct continuity option. A compatible USB-C charger or power bank can be useful when you have time to recharge between sessions. Do not treat the charging figures as a promise of runtime while shooting or assume every charger will match them.
Think of the options by outcome. A spare battery adds another battery-powered shooting cycle and can keep you recording when there is no outlet or break. A charger or power bank only replenishes the installed battery; it is useful when the camera can be set aside long enough to charge. If your itinerary has no dependable charging stop, prioritize the spare. If you have repeated breaks and want to travel light, charging equipment may be sufficient, provided it is suitable for the camera and available during those breaks.
Confirm the battery is for X4 Air
The X4 Air manual says to use only batteries provided by Insta360 and designed for X4 Air, and directs users to the official store for replacement purchases. Check that the product listing explicitly identifies X4 Air compatibility. Do not assume that a battery for another X-series camera will fit or work. Insta360’s official store currently lists Starter and Travel bundles that include an additional battery, but bundle availability may differ by market.

When shopping, use a precise product description such as Insta360 X4 Air replacement battery or spare battery for X4 Air. Verify the model name on the package or listing, and check seller authenticity at the point of purchase. A listing that merely says “X-series compatible” does not establish that it is approved for X4 Air. The manual’s warning is a safety and compatibility instruction, not a suggestion to experiment with similar-looking packs.
Do not count a bundle as universally available. The official store’s Starter and Travel offerings can change by region, so check the store serving your market. If a bundle includes an additional battery, confirm that the battery is identified for X4 Air before ordering.
Plan charging stops around the published charge times
Insta360 Support’s X4 Air charging instructions list approximately 36 minutes to reach 80% and 57 minutes to reach 100% with a 9V/3A adapter. These are charging estimates, not guaranteed times for every setup. They can help you decide whether a stop is long enough to replenish the battery, but they do not say how much recording time any particular charge percentage will provide.
The figures are most useful as schedule markers. A break of roughly 36 minutes may be enough to reach the published 80% point under the stated adapter conditions; a break of roughly 57 minutes is the listed time to full charge. Cable, adapter, temperature, battery condition and the camera’s state can affect actual charging, so retain flexibility rather than promising an exact result.

If your schedule allows, charge between sessions and start the next one with a replenished battery. For outings with no reliable charging break, a charged X4 Air-compatible spare is the more direct plan for continuing to shoot. A power bank can be treated as a source for recharging between sessions, but the available guidance does not establish that connecting one while recording increases total runtime. Do not market or plan around that unverified assumption.

Prepare for cold weather and extended storage
The X4 Air manual gives the camera and battery a recommended operating range of -4°F to 104°F (-20°C to 40°C). For cold-weather use, Insta360 advises fully charging the battery at a regular temperature before use. The manufacturer’s operating range is a guide to recommended conditions, not a promise that runtime will be unchanged throughout that range.
- Before shooting in the cold, fully charge the battery at a regular temperature.
- For extended non-use, store the battery in a cool, dry place.
- Follow the manual’s advice to periodically recharge and discharge a battery kept unused for an extended period. The manual does not specify a particular interval.
Do not turn the temperature range into a runtime guarantee. Being within the recommended range does not mean the battery will deliver the same result as the 77°F specification test. Treat the range as an operating guideline and plan conservatively for important footage.
For storage, the key actions are simple: keep the battery cool and dry, avoid leaving it unused indefinitely without following the manual’s periodic recharge and discharge advice, and bring it back to a regular temperature before charging or cold-weather use as directed. The manual does not provide a required maintenance interval, so do not invent a weekly or monthly schedule.
Build a practical battery plan for an outing
Start by writing down the clips you actually need and the mode each clip requires. Compare the expected shooting time with the appropriate published estimate: about 88 minutes for 8K30 or about 105 minutes for 6K24 under Insta360’s stated conditions. Add time for retakes and pauses, then decide whether one installed battery is enough for a low-risk session or whether a spare is necessary.
- Before leaving: fully charge the installed battery and any X4 Air-compatible spare at a regular temperature.
- Set the camera: shorten Screen Auto Sleep through the Shortcut Menu and choose the resolution and frame rate required by the project.
- During the shoot: stop recording when a take ends, power the camera off during long idle periods, and avoid leaving it powered on in a bag or vehicle.
- At a break: recharge with a suitable USB-C setup if you have enough time, using the 36-minute-to-80% and 57-minute-to-100% figures only as planning references.
- When the battery runs down: swap in the charged model-specific spare rather than improvising with a battery intended for another camera.
- After the outing: store batteries cool and dry if they will not be used for an extended period, and follow the manual’s periodic recharge/discharge guidance.
This workflow separates what adds another shooting cycle from what merely restores charge. It also keeps the manufacturer’s numbers in context: they are estimates measured under defined conditions, not a stopwatch for every field shoot.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common pitfalls to avoid
- Promising a percentage from Screen Auto Sleep: Insta360 recommends a shorter timeout but does not quantify the gain.
- Using the 8K30 figure as a universal runtime: the 88-minute estimate applies to the stated test conditions and mode.
- Assuming 6K24 always lasts exactly 105 minutes: the 105-minute figure is also an approximate manufacturer result.
- Leaving the camera powered on between setups: power it off during longer pauses; the manual does not quantify the saving.
- Buying an unspecified X-series battery: use only a battery explicitly designed for X4 Air and supplied by Insta360 or an appropriate official channel.
- Confusing charge time with recording time: 36 minutes to 80% and 57 minutes to 100% describe charging with a 9V/3A adapter, not guaranteed shooting duration.
- Assuming recording while charging is a tested solution: the cited guidance does not establish a runtime benefit.
- Turning the operating range into a cold-weather guarantee: fully charge at a regular temperature, but expect conditions to affect real-world results.
- Inventing a maintenance interval: the manual advises periodic recharge and discharge for extended non-use without specifying an exact interval.
What not to count on
The available X4 Air guidance supports a shorter screen timeout, careful power-off habits, a suitable capture-mode choice, model-specific spare batteries, charging between sessions, and cold-weather and storage precautions. It does not quantify the effect of changing Wi-Fi use or screen brightness, nor does it establish a benefit from recording while charging. Treat such changes as unverified for runtime planning rather than relying on a specific gain.
The most dependable plan is to set a shorter Screen Auto Sleep duration, switch the camera off during longer idle periods, and bring a charged X4 Air-compatible spare if the shoot cannot accommodate a charging break. Use Insta360’s mode-specific figures as estimates under their stated test conditions, not as a guaranteed field runtime.

Does Screen Auto Sleep really extend battery life?
It is the battery-saving adjustment explicitly recommended in the X4 Air manual. Set it through Shortcut Menu > Settings > Screen Auto Sleep and choose a shorter timeout. Insta360 does not publish a measured number of minutes or a percentage gained.
Should I turn the X4 Air off between shots?
Yes, when the pause is long enough that leaving the camera powered on would be unnecessary. Stop recording, then press and hold the power button for two seconds. The manual does not quantify the resulting saving.
Which spare battery should I buy?
Choose a battery explicitly designed for Insta360 X4 Air. The manual warns against unofficial batteries and directs replacement purchases to the official store. Do not assume batteries for X4, X5 or another X-series model interchange.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Is a USB-C power bank a replacement for a spare battery?
Not in the continuity sense. A spare provides another battery-powered shooting cycle. A charger or power bank replenishes the battery between sessions. The available charging guidance does not establish that recording while connected increases total runtime.
How quickly does the X4 Air charge?
Insta360 Support lists about 36 minutes to reach 80% and about 57 minutes to reach 100% with a 9V/3A adapter. These are approximate charging times, not guaranteed field results or promises of a particular recording duration.
What should I do before using the camera in cold weather?
Fully charge the battery at a regular temperature before use. The recommended camera and battery operating range is -4°F to 104°F (-20°C to 40°C). The range does not guarantee the same runtime as the 77°F test conditions.
How should I store the battery when I am not using the camera?
Store it in a cool, dry place during extended non-use and follow the manual’s advice to periodically recharge and discharge it. Insta360 does not specify a particular maintenance interval.
Will turning off Wi-Fi or lowering screen brightness add a known amount of time?
No quantified X4 Air result is established for either change in the cited guidance. Avoid planning around a specific percentage or number of minutes from those adjustments.
Can I rely on the 88- or 105-minute figure for my exact shoot?
Use the figures as planning estimates only. They were measured under specific conditions, and Insta360 warns that actual battery life may vary with settings, conditions and device state.
The Bottom Line
For the longest practical time between charges, shorten Screen Auto Sleep, power the X4 Air off during longer pauses, select 8K30 or 6K24 according to the footage you actually need, and carry a charged battery explicitly made for X4 Air. Use the 88-minute and 105-minute figures, plus the 36-minute and 57-minute charging estimates, as manufacturer planning references—not guarantees.
