To make an Arlo camera battery last longer, reduce unnecessary recordings and other power-intensive activity: shorten clip length, tune motion sensitivity, schedule the camera, and choose a power-management mode that suits your needs. Good placement and a reliable network connection also matter. A compatible solar panel can help maintain charge outdoors, but it is a trickle charger—not a way to rapidly refill a depleted battery.
Reduce the activity that drains the battery
Arlo identifies excessive camera use as the most common cause of battery drain. Frequent motion events, long recordings, spotlight or floodlight use, and audio triggers can all add to consumption. Start by checking whether the camera is recording events you do not need.

- Shorten recording duration: Long clips use more power. Choose the shortest duration that still captures the event clearly.
- Adjust motion sensitivity: Lower it if wind, passing traffic, or movement outside the area you need is triggering recordings. Keep it high enough to capture the activity that matters.
- Schedule the camera: Use a schedule to make it active only when coverage is needed, such as when nobody is home.
- Limit lighting and audio triggers: Reduce spotlight or floodlight use where it is not necessary, and review whether audio-triggered events are useful.
- Re-aim the camera: Frame the entrance, driveway, or other important area rather than a busy street or other source of constant motion.
These changes reduce avoidable activity without requiring you to give up useful coverage. Arlo’s battery guidance is at How can I extend Arlo camera battery life?

- Tenergy's lithium batteries are engineered and produced to deliver power availability even in really hot or cold outdoor usage environment.
- 10 years shelf life - Date stamped for guaranteed freshness low self discharge 123A batteries provides power when needed.
- UL certified and include built-in PTC protections against over current, short circuits, and overheating.
- CR123A size - Interchangeable with 123A, 5018LC, CR123, CR123A, CR17345, EL123, DL123A, K123A, VL123A, and CR17345.
- Best Video: Prioritizes video quality, which can use more battery.
- Optimized: Balances video quality and battery runtime.
- Best Battery Life: Trades some video quality for longer battery life.
- Low Power Mode: On supported models, takes snapshots instead of video. This changes what the camera captures, so use it only if snapshots meet your needs.
For a practical starting point, try Optimized. If charging frequency matters more than video detail, choose Best Battery Life; if you need the clearest video, Best Video may be the better fit. Arlo’s instructions for changing the setting are in its Power Management guide. Low Power Mode details are in Arlo’s Low Power Mode guide.
Improve placement and connection
A camera that repeatedly struggles to connect may use more power. Place it where it has a useful Wi-Fi, SmartHub, or Base Station connection, while avoiding interference from nearby equipment. Arlo advises keeping a camera at least 3 feet (1 meter) from a Wi-Fi router or SmartHub/Base Station, and at least 6.5 feet (2 meters) from other Arlo devices.

- FARSAIL Every order is backed by a one-year, no questions asked for quality and satisfaction. If you don’t love it, contact us and we’ll either replace them. Recommended without any doubt or hesitation.
Avoid aiming into areas with constant movement, and consider whether the location is unusually dark: Arlo says low-light placement can increase battery use as infrared sensors work harder. Where practical, choose a position with adequate light while preserving the view you need.

For Arlo Go and Go 2, cellular signal is also important. Arlo recommends at least three LTE bars; two bars or fewer can drain the battery. If a Go 2 uses both Wi-Fi and LTE, keeping it in Wi-Fi range can avoid battery use from frequent network switching. See Arlo’s battery-life guidance for placement and connection advice.

Know what battery-life estimates actually assume
Arlo’s published runtimes are estimates, not guarantees. Its average-use estimates assume Optimized or Best Battery Life mode and less than three minutes of recording per day. More motion events, longer clips, lighting use, weak connectivity, or other demanding conditions can shorten real-world runtime.
| Camera model | Arlo average-use estimate |
|---|---|
| Essential Security Camera 2K/HD (3rd Gen) | 4 months |
| Essential XL Security Camera 2K/HD (3rd Gen) | 16 months |
| Pro Security Camera 2K (6th Gen) | 9 months |
| Pro XL Security Camera 2K (6th Gen) | 18 months |
These are Arlo estimates published in 2026 under the stated average-use assumptions; they are not independently verified runtime results. Different models and usage patterns should not be compared as if they were tested under identical real-world conditions. Arlo’s current estimates are on its battery-life support page.

Use solar or other charging accessories only when compatible
For an outdoor camera with adequate sun exposure, a model-compatible solar panel can reduce how often you need to recharge manually. Arlo describes its 2-watt Solar Panel as providing year-round trickle charging to keep a camera battery charged—not charging a battery from low to full. Heavy camera use can outpace solar input, so a panel is not a substitute for controlling unnecessary activity.

Compatibility varies by model. The same caution applies to XL batteries, housings, and outdoor charging cables: Arlo lists different compatible camera generations across its guidance, and an incompatible cable may not charge the camera. Use the supplied rechargeable battery or an Arlo replacement battery, and confirm accessory compatibility for your exact camera before purchase.
Check temperature and charging conditions
Arlo says its batteries do not charge below 32°F (0°C) or above 113°F (45°C), even when plugged in. If the camera is too cold or hot, let it return to a safe temperature before charging. Arlo says the battery-level reading is most accurate between 65–75°F (18–24°C), so readings outside that range may be less reliable. Its battery-status guidance is available in What do the Arlo camera battery level icons and notifications mean?
If a camera reports that it is not charging, check temperature and confirm that the cable and charging accessory are compatible with that model. Do not assume a generic cable will work; Arlo warns that an incompatible cable can prevent charging.
