In desktop Visio, use Design > Size > Auto Size to let the drawing page grow, or choose Fit to Drawing to match the page to the diagram. In Visio for the web, use Design > Size for a defined page size; the web app normally uses an infinite canvas. Page size and printer-paper size are separate, so check print setup if you need the diagram on one sheet.
Choose the right page-sizing method
Visio distinguishes the drawing page—the workspace containing your diagram—from the paper used by a printer. Changing the drawing page does not automatically change printer paper or guarantee a one-sheet printout.

| Your goal | Use this control | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Keep adding content beyond the current page edge | Desktop: Design > Size > Auto Size | Expands the drawing page as needed; printer-paper size stays separate. |
| Fit the page around an existing diagram | Desktop: Design > Size > Fit to Drawing | Resizes the drawing page to the diagram, leaving the configured margin. |
| Specify a particular page size | Desktop: Page Setup, or web: Design > Size | Sets drawing-page dimensions, independently of print paper. |
| Print on one sheet or across multiple sheets | Desktop: Page Setup > Print Setup | Controls print paper and scaling, not the underlying drawing-page dimensions. |
Extend a page in desktop Visio
Let the page expand as you work
- Open the diagram and select Design > Size > Auto Size.
- Continue adding or moving shapes beyond the current page edge. On supported desktop versions, Auto Size extends the diagramming page as needed.
Auto Size is useful for diagrams expected to keep growing. It changes the drawing page, not printer-paper size. Dragging a page edge turns Auto Size off, so use that approach only when you intend to resize the page manually. Microsoft describes the feature as extending the page as needed while you work to support diagrams larger than one printed page: Change the page setup by using Auto Size or selecting size and orientation.

Fit the page to an existing diagram
- Select Design > Size > Fit to Drawing.
- To change the white space around the diagram, open Page Setup, then use Print Setup > Setup to adjust the margin.
Fit to Drawing is best when the diagram is already arranged and you want the page to wrap its content rather than continue expanding as you work.

Set exact dimensions or drag the page edge
For a specific size, select the page tab you want to change, open Page Setup, choose the Page Size tab, and set the drawing-page dimensions. Page Setup also lets you configure printer-paper size separately. Labels can vary by Visio version.
To resize visually, select the Pointer tool, hold Ctrl while positioning the pointer at a page edge, and drag. Drag a corner to change both dimensions. In many templates, Visio already expands the drawing page automatically when content extends beyond its current edge; behavior can vary by template. See Microsoft’s guidance on changing the drawing page or printer paper size.

Set page size in Visio for the web
Visio for the web normally uses an infinite canvas rather than a fixed page edge. For a defined page size, select Design > Size; set orientation separately with Design > Orientation. To see where pages break, select View > Page Breaks. Page breaks are off by default.
Auto Size and Fit to Drawing are mostly unavailable in the web app. Some existing pages may behave differently—for example, pages with AutoSize off or assigned background pages may not have Infinite Canvas enabled. Page Size applies to the displayed page; if a background page needs a different size, set that page’s size separately. Microsoft’s page-size guidance covers the distinction.

Make a larger Visio diagram print as intended
Drawing-page size and printer-paper size are independent. If the drawing page is larger than the selected paper, Visio can tile the output across several sheets. In desktop Visio, open Page Setup and use Print Setup to choose paper, orientation, margins, and print zoom. To fit the drawing on one sheet, set Fit to to one sheet across and one sheet down, then inspect print preview. Print zoom changes the printed size but leaves the drawing page unchanged.
Choose the print behavior that matches the job:
- One-sheet output: Fit the job to one sheet across and one down. The drawing is scaled to fit the selected paper.
- Full-size tiled output: Keep the larger drawing page and print it across multiple sheets.
- More room without changing page scale: Select larger printer paper if your printer supports it.

Troubleshoot unexpected page or print behavior
- The page grew, but the printout did not: Auto Size extends the drawing page; it does not change printer-paper size. Adjust Print Setup if the paper or scaling needs to change.
- The diagram prints across several sheets: The drawing page is larger than the selected printer paper, or the print job is not set to fit one sheet. Choose larger paper, fit the job to one sheet, or retain tiled printing.
- The web diagram has no visible edge: That is the web app’s usual infinite-canvas behavior. Turn on View > Page Breaks to inspect breaks or choose a defined size under Design > Size.
- A background page did not resize: Set the size of that background page separately; changing the displayed page does not necessarily resize its assigned background.
- A new page has unexpected dimensions: New pages inherit properties from the active page by default. When inserting a page, size and scale can be customized. See Microsoft’s instructions for adding a page in Visio.
Which approach should you use?
- Choose Auto Size for an evolving desktop diagram whose workspace should expand as content is added.
- Choose Fit to Drawing when the diagram is arranged and the page should fit its shapes with a controlled margin.
- Choose a defined page size when dimensions or a fixed layout matter, especially in the web app.
- Set print scaling separately when the goal is one-sheet output or tiled printing.
