To export ChatGPT data, sign in to an eligible account and go to Profile menu → Settings → Data controls → Export under “Export data,” then confirm. OpenAI will notify you when the ZIP is ready; download it while signed in to the same account, extract it, and check that it contains the conversations and files you need. You can also request a copy through the OpenAI Privacy Portal.
How to export your ChatGPT history and data from Settings
- Sign in to the ChatGPT account whose data you want to export.
- Open the profile menu and select Settings.
- Select Data controls.
- Under Export data, select Export.
- Confirm the request.
- Watch the email address or phone number associated with the account for OpenAI’s ready notice. Open the download link while signed in to the same account that requested the export.
- Download the ZIP file, extract it, and review its contents. Store both the download and extracted files securely; the archive may include sensitive account information.
Who can export ChatGPT data?
OpenAI’s current instructions list ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, and Pro accounts, as well as eligible ChatGPT Edu workspaces, for exports through Settings. Settings-based exports are unavailable when logged out and are not available for ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, or ChatGPT for Healthcare workspaces. If you use a managed workspace, ask its owner about access to organization-managed data.

Additional requirements for ChatGPT Edu
An Edu workspace must have no data-residency configuration, and an administrator must enable export permission for the member’s default or assigned custom role. Members request and download their own exports. If the control is missing, ask an Edu administrator to check workspace eligibility and your role permissions.

For a consumer ChatGPT account, the OpenAI Privacy Portal is an alternative if Settings export is unavailable or you cannot sign in. Submit a privacy request, choose the consumer ChatGPT account option, select Download my data, and follow the verification instructions. OpenAI’s guidance does not establish that this route produces a different archive from a Settings request.

How long does an export take, and when does its link expire?
OpenAI Help Center says an export can take up to 7 days to arrive, and the download link expires 24 hours after receipt. These are published service timeframes, not a guarantee for an individual request. If an export is still processing, OpenAI says to wait for it to finish before submitting another request. If the link has expired, request a new export through Settings or the Privacy Portal.
If you plan to move or merge a personal workspace into a managed workspace, request, download, and inspect the export beforehand. OpenAI cautions that after the personal workspace is removed, the old link may no longer open and another export may no longer be requestable.

What does the ChatGPT data export ZIP contain?
OpenAI describes the ZIP as containing chat history and other relevant account data. The exact files can vary; the published pages do not establish one exhaustive file list for every account and export. Inspect your own archive rather than assuming every example below will be present.

conversations.json; larger exports may instead have numbered conversation JSON files. - Files and assets: The Edu guidance also gives files and other assets used in conversations as examples of possible contents.
- Account and conversation metadata: These are also listed as possible contents in the Edu guidance.
- Shared-link records: OpenAI says the export includes a
shared_conversationsfile with the link ID, conversation ID, title, and anonymity setting. It records link metadata; it is not a substitute for opening and checking each conversation.
Checklist: review your export before relying on it
- Make sure the ZIP downloaded and extracted successfully.
- Check that the archive contains the conversations you expected, as OpenAI recommends.
- If relevant, look for conversation JSON files, numbered JSON files in a larger export, and files or assets used in conversations.
- If shared-link records matter to you, check for
shared_conversations. - Keep the archive in a private, secure location rather than a public or shared folder, and avoid sending it to an untrusted service. This is a practical precaution because the export may contain sensitive account information.
- If you are preparing for a workspace move, confirm the archive is downloaded and checked before the move.
OpenAI’s support pages do not provide a complete field-by-field explanation of every JSON property. Do not assume a property’s meaning from its name alone; the archive shows which files this particular request produced.

What exporting does not do
An export cannot restore conversations that were already deleted.
You can upload exported conversation JSON into a new conversation in another personal account for reference, but that is not a full account migration. It does not recreate each old conversation as a separate chat, restore the old sidebar, merge accounts, or move subscriptions, settings, memories, GPTs, or workspace access. If the export is too large to upload, OpenAI suggests uploading numbered files separately, splitting the JSON, or selecting only the conversations you need.
