To make a portable copy of your Samsung contacts, open Contacts, tap More options and Settings, then choose Export contacts and Internal storage. For ongoing access on other devices, sync contacts with a Google account; for a whole-phone move, use Smart Switch. The best route depends on whether you need a file, online access, a SIM copy, or a broader migration.

Its recent walkthrough demonstrates the steps on a Galaxy S24 FE running One UI 8.0 and Android 16; follow the closest available labels on your own phone. Export a contacts file to your Samsung phone
This is the clearest route when you want a one-time, portable copy rather than ongoing account sync. Samsung’s guide says the exported file can be found in the phone’s My Files app and shared by options such as Quick Share, email, or message. Samsung’s export instructions show this process.

- Open the Contacts app.
- Tap More options, then Settings.
- Choose Export contacts.
- Select Internal storage as the destination and confirm the export.
- Open My Files to locate the contacts file. Share or move it using an available method if you need a copy off the phone.
If your menu differs, look for the export command in Contacts settings; the exact wording and placement may vary with your Galaxy model and software.

Sync contacts with Google for access on other devices
Google sync is useful when you want contacts associated with your Google account and available through that account on other devices. On a Samsung phone, the documented route is Contacts > Menu > Manage contacts > Sync contacts; turn on the Google account you want to use and start the sync. The menu wording may vary by version. Samsung UK’s Google contact sync guide explains the account-based setup.
Check where each contact is saved
Turning on sync does not automatically move every contact into Google. A contact saved to My phone or to another account is not thereby saved to Google. Check a contact’s storage location, and move or import it to the Google account if you need it included. Samsung’s contacts guide covers account-based sync, while its UK guidance notes the storage-location issue.

Back up before syncing
Samsung advises backing up contacts in the Google account before syncing because sync errors can delete contacts. Make a backup before changing sync settings if the contacts are important to you. Samsung’s sync guidance includes this caution.

Export contacts to a SIM only when basic details are enough
A SIM copy is a constrained option, not a full contact backup. Samsung France warns: “The name and phone number of the contact will be copied to your SIM card, but other information of the contact may be lost.” Long names or numbers may also be cut off. Use Smart Switch for a wider backup or phone migration
Smart Switch is suited to moving contacts as part of a larger device transfer, or to backing up and restoring a phone through a computer or SD card. Samsung says its Smart Switch contact backup covers contacts stored in Samsung, Google, and SIM accounts; contacts held in other external accounts are excluded. Check where your contacts are saved before relying on the backup. Samsung Canada’s backup and restore guidance, updated March 7, 2026, describes the computer and SD-card workflows and account coverage.
Smart Switch can also transfer contacts between devices, but available methods and compatibility depend on the source and destination devices. Check the current instructions for both phones before starting. Samsung’s UK transfer guide describes Smart Switch transfer options; its compatibility details were published in 2022 and may have changed.

Which option should you use?
- Need a file to share or keep? Export to internal storage, then find it in My Files.
- Want contacts to stay available through an account? Sync to Google after checking that the contacts are saved to that account and backing them up.
- Moving to a new phone? Use Smart Switch for the broader transfer, and confirm that the contacts’ source accounts are included.
- Have to use a SIM? Export only if names and numbers are sufficient; other details may not survive.
