How to Export Passwords From a Mac and Keep the CSV Secure

Use the Mac Passwords app to export a selected account or all eligible passwords to CSV. The file is unencrypted, so import it promptly, check the result, and delete it.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To export passwords on a Mac, open the Passwords app and choose File > Export All Passwords to File, or select an account and choose File > Export Selected Password to File. Apple saves the export as a CSV, which is not encrypted: anyone who can access the file can read the credentials. Import it into the destination password manager, verify the expected entries arrived, then delete the CSV.

Because this export is plaintext, choose a save location with appropriately limited access and avoid creating extra copies. Apple recommends deleting the file after import.

Choose what to export

Passwords on Mac offers two export scopes. Choose the one that fits your move, while keeping in mind that neither option includes every kind of credential stored in Apple’s ecosystem.

Option What it exports Use it when
Export Selected Password to File The selected account You need to move or share one entry with a destination you trust.
Export All Passwords to File All eligible passwords You are migrating a larger set and want to avoid exporting entries one at a time.

Apple’s export guide says the file excludes Wi-Fi passwords, passwords shared with a group unless you created that group, and access to Sign in with Apple accounts. If any of those matter to your move, do not assume the CSV contains them. Apple’s Mac export guide

Export passwords from the Mac Passwords app

Before exporting, confirm that the destination password manager currently accepts CSV imports. Import support and field handling vary by app, and Apple’s instructions do not establish that every third-party manager will accept every field.

  1. Open Passwords. Find the account you want to export. For a single-account export, select it.
  2. Choose the export command. For one account, select File > Export Selected Password to File. For all eligible passwords, select File > Export All Passwords to File.
  3. Confirm the export. For one account, click Export Password; for all eligible passwords, click Export Passwords.
  4. Save the CSV. Choose a location with appropriately limited access, then click Save. Treat the resulting file as a temporary list of credentials, not as an encrypted vault.

Keep the exported CSV secure

Apple warns: “Passwords you export are not encrypted and are visible to anyone who has access to the file.” Apple Support’s Mac Passwords guide The file’s security therefore depends on controlling access to it. Avoid leaving copies in shared folders or sending it through channels where other people could access it.

  • Export only when you are ready to import, rather than keeping the CSV around as a backup.
  • Choose a save location that is not broadly accessible to other users.
  • Import promptly and confirm that the destination contains the entries you expected.
  • Delete the exported CSV after a successful import, as Apple recommends.

Deleting the file is the right cleanup step, but Apple’s export guidance does not say that ordinary deletion guarantees forensic removal from every storage device or backup. Do not treat the CSV as safely erased merely because it no longer appears in its original folder.

Apple says imported entries do not replace existing Passwords entries, and the app lets you review entries that could not be imported. The import guide prompts you to delete the file to protect account security. Apple’s Mac import guide

If entries are missing after import

  • Check whether the credential type was excluded. Wi-Fi passwords, group-shared passwords for groups you did not create, and access to Sign in with Apple accounts are outside Apple’s stated export coverage.
  • Review failed imports. Passwords on Mac provides a review of entries that could not be imported; use it to identify what did not transfer.
  • Check the destination’s current CSV support. A CSV can be accepted without every field or row being handled as expected. Consult the destination app’s current import instructions before relying on the migration.

Passwords is Apple’s built-in credential manager. Apple’s guide describes using passwords across devices signed into the same Apple Account with Passwords enabled in iCloud settings; it identifies macOS Tahoe 26 and macOS Sequoia 15. Apple’s Passwords app overview
