Export your conversations from the account you are leaving, download and check the archive, and keep a secure copy before closing or removing that account. An export is not the same as a migration: what you can import—and whether chats reappear as separate threads, searchable history, or only reference material—depends on the destination. ChatGPT offers a reference-file workaround, Claude does not support importing exports into another personal Claude account, and Gemini documents ZIP chat-history imports with limits.
Before switching, know what an export will—and will not—preserve
Think of an export as an archive you control, not a universal transfer package. The official guidance for these services does not establish a common format that recreates every conversation, setting, file, memory, subscription, or workspace in another platform.

Before you start, check whether your source account can export, what the archive contains, and whether your chosen destination accepts it. Preserve anything you may need while you still have access to the original account. An export cannot restore conversations already deleted from ChatGPT, and the documented destination options differ substantially:

The 5 GB import limit is stated by Google in its current Gemini guidance, accessed October 3, 2026. It is not a general limit for exports from other services.

Use this sequence to protect your history
- Request the export from the source account. Follow that platform’s current steps below. If the account belongs to a managed workspace, check whether an administrator or owner must make the request.
- Download the archive promptly. Export links can expire; the expiration windows for ChatGPT and Claude are 24 hours after delivery.
- Inspect the downloaded file. Confirm that the archive opens and includes the conversations or data you need. For ChatGPT, OpenAI specifically advises checking the ZIP contents.
- Keep a secure copy. Treat the archive and its download link as sensitive account data. Store it somewhere access-controlled; an encrypted external drive is optional, not required.
- Check the destination’s import behavior before leaving. Confirm whether it accepts your archive and what survives. Do not close or remove the source account until you have downloaded and checked the material you want to keep.
Export ChatGPT conversations
Request and download the export
- While signed in to the account you want to export, open the profile menu and choose Settings → Data controls → Export data.
- Confirm the export request. OpenAI also offers a request through its Privacy Portal.
- When the download link arrives, download the ZIP while signed in to the account that requested it. OpenAI says delivery can take up to seven days and the link expires after 24 hours. These are the current operational windows in OpenAI Help Center guidance accessed October 3, 2026.
- Open the ZIP and check its contents. The archive includes chat history and other relevant account data. An export cannot restore conversations that were already deleted.
OpenAI lists the export setting for Free, Go, Plus, Pro, and eligible Edu accounts. It is not available for Business, Enterprise, or Healthcare workspaces; users in managed workspaces should contact their workspace owner. OpenAI also warns that removing a personal workspace may make an earlier download link unusable or prevent another export request. See OpenAI’s ChatGPT export instructions.
Use the archive as reference in another personal ChatGPT account
If you are moving to a different personal ChatGPT account, OpenAI documents a workaround that makes exported conversations available as reference in a new chat. It is not an account merge or a restoration of the original sidebar.

- Extract the export ZIP and locate
conversations.json. Larger exports may contain numbered JSON files instead. - In the personal ChatGPT account you plan to keep, start a new conversation and upload the JSON file.
- If a file is too large, OpenAI suggests uploading numbered files separately, splitting the JSON, or selecting only the conversations you need.
The new conversation may use the uploaded data as reference, but the process does not recreate individual old chats or transfer subscriptions, workspace membership, custom instructions, memories, GPTs, or account settings. Details are in OpenAI’s account-transfer guidance.

Export Claude conversations
Request an export
- On Claude web or Claude Desktop, open Settings → Privacy and request a data export.
- Wait for the email, then sign in to the account that requested the export to download it.
- Download the archive within 24 hours of delivery. If the link expires, Anthropic says you can request another export.
Individual users on Free, Pro, and Max can export conversation and user data. The export cannot be initiated from the Claude iOS or Android apps. For Team and Enterprise, the organization’s Primary Owner can request an export. These instructions are from Anthropic’s guidance dated July 8, 2026: Export your Claude data.

Anthropic says a Claude export cannot be imported into another personal Claude account, and personal accounts are not otherwise migrated between accounts. The company describes a separate route for moving a personal account into a Team or Enterprise organization; that is distinct from importing an archive into another personal account.

Import a chat archive into Gemini
- Request and download an archive from the platform you are leaving.
- In Gemini, open Import memory → Import chats and upload the archive as a ZIP file.
- Allow time for processing; Google says it may take up to a day. After import, chats can appear in the chat list, be searched, and be deleted individually or by import batch.
Google’s current guidance sets a maximum ZIP size of 5 GB and permits up to five ZIP uploads per day. The imported material is chat text; previously generated images and files are not included. Availability has conditions, including being at least 18 and having Gemini personalization enabled. See Google’s Gemini chat-history import instructions.

Export Gemini Apps data with Google Takeout
- Use the Google account associated with Gemini Apps and open Google Takeout.
- To include chats and activity, select My Activity → Gemini Apps. The separate Gemini data item covers Gems data.
- Choose ZIP or TGZ, then select delivery by email link or a supported storage destination. Takeout also offers one-time or recurring archives.
- If you choose the email option, download the archive within seven days. Google says delivery commonly takes hours to days.
Google lists Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, and Box among the possible storage destinations. For a third-party destination, review folder sharing and the receiving service’s terms and policies: Google says those govern the archive after it reaches that service. Protect the archive after downloading
- Limit access. Chat archives can contain sensitive personal or account information. Do not share the download link, and keep the file in storage protected by appropriate access controls.
- Check the destination before using cloud delivery. If a Takeout archive goes to a third-party storage provider, review who can access the destination folder and the provider’s applicable terms.
- Keep a copy before account or workspace changes. Complete the download and verify the archive before removing the source account or workspace; access to a later export request or an earlier link may be affected.
- Keep export and import separate in your plan. An archive may preserve information for your own records even when the next platform cannot import it in a useful form.
