The right way to save your bookmarks depends on where they live. Chrome and Firefox support bookmark exports as HTML files; Safari on a Mac also uses HTML, while Safari on iPhone has a separate selected-data export that creates a ZIP file. If you use a saved-link manager, check its own backup and export options.
Choose the export route that matches where your links are saved

Export browser bookmarks to a file
For Chrome or Firefox, use the browser’s official bookmark export instructions and save the resulting HTML file somewhere you can find again. HTML is useful when you want a portable bookmark file for backup or transfer to another browser. Menu labels and steps can change, so follow the linked vendor instructions for your current browser version rather than relying on a fixed click path.

Safari on Mac has a distinct documented format: an HTML file using Netscape Bookmarks conventions. Safari on iPhone is different: Apple’s guide covers selected Safari data exported to another browser as a ZIP archive in Downloads, with the available data and flow dependent on the supported iOS version.
Choose between a browser export and an account-data export
In Chrome, a bookmark-only HTML export and an export of Google Account data are separate routes. Choose the HTML bookmark file when you want a file focused on browser bookmarks or a potential browser transfer. Choose the account-data route when your goal is to download data included in Google’s account export guidance; it is not the same procedure as exporting bookmarks from Chrome.

Back up links from a saved-link manager
A dedicated service may offer backups or exports that cover links stored in that service rather than bookmarks stored in a browser. Raindrop.io’s API documentation describes backup endpoints, and its published materials describe daily backups plus HTML and CSV export, including exports of subsets in HTML, CSV, and text. Check the service’s current account controls and documentation before relying on a particular option or schedule, since the cited materials do not establish that every feature is currently available to every account.

Keep a separate copy and check that it is usable
- Export from the browser or saved-link service that actually holds the links.
- Confirm the resulting HTML file or ZIP archive is present and saved in a location you can identify.
- If you want an offline second copy, copy the exported file to removable storage such as a USB flash drive. This is optional; export does not require additional hardware.
- When practical, verify recoverability by importing the file into a compatible browser or restoring it through the service’s documented process. Do not treat a file as a proven backup until you know it can be used.
