Set a destination and filename prefix, choose which layers to include and a file type, then select Run. Photoshop creates a file for each included layer.
Export each layer to its own file

Open the layered document in Photoshop desktop. Before exporting, make sure layer names are descriptive and visibility is set the way you want; those choices affect the exported filenames and set.

Choose File > Export > Layers to Files. Adobe’s current desktop instructions use this menu path. In some older versions, the command may instead appear under File > Scripts > Export Layers To Files.

In the dialog, choose the destination folder and enter a filename prefix. Photoshop combines the prefix with each layer’s name to create the output filenames. See Adobe’s guidance on organizing layers.

Select Visible Layers Only to omit hidden layers. If you leave it unchecked, the export can include layers regardless of their visibility setting.

Choose a file type and set any format-specific options shown in the dialog. The available choices may vary; Adobe’s instructions for this command do not promise a universal format list.

Select Run, then check the destination folder for the generated files. Adobe describes the command as saving one file per layer. Adobe’s current Layers to Files instructions cover the dialog options.

Choose the right Photoshop export method
Use Layers to Files for a one-time batch in which each included layer becomes a separate file. Other Photoshop export features suit different jobs:

Unclear filenames: Rename layers and choose a recognizable prefix before running the export. The output names combine both.

Wrong format or appearance: Select a suitable file type and inspect the options available in the workflow you are using. Transparency and JPG quality controls are documented for Export As; do not assume those exact controls appear in Layers to Files.

Color shifts in a managed workflow: Consider Include ICC Profile when the exported files should carry the working-space profile.
Adobe’s current desktop documentation was last updated February 23, 2026; older Photoshop help documents the alternative Scripts menu route. Menu labels and available options can differ by version and export method. Adobe’s layer help describes the older route.
