For a standard SDR video, export from Premiere Pro with File > Export > Media, choose H.264, and select the Match Source – Adaptive High Bitrate preset. Keep the sequence’s frame rate and frame size, leave the color as BT.709, and check the output against YouTube’s upload recommendations before you render. Adobe presents this preset as a quick, high-quality starting point, and YouTube’s upload guidance supports the same basic container, codec, and color choices.
Export the sequence step by step
Start from the finished sequence, not from a single clip, so that the export contains the full timeline, audio mix, and any titles or effects you applied.

- Select the sequence in the Timeline panel and confirm it is the active sequence.
- Choose File > Export > Media. The keyboard shortcut is Ctrl+M on Windows or Command+M on macOS.
- In the Export Settings dialog, set the destination. You can export to a local media file, or to YouTube directly. Specify the file name and output location.
- Under the format menu, choose H.264. For the preset, choose Match Source – Adaptive High Bitrate. Adobe recommends this combination for a typical online video. The adaptive Match Source presets keep most of the source settings and adjust the bitrate according to frame size.
- Check the Output section, especially frame size and frame rate. If you intend to publish at the sequence’s native rate and size, leave both unchanged. A frame-rate conversion can introduce motion artifacts such as judder or uneven motion, so avoid it unless you have a specific reason.
- Select Export to render inside Premiere, or select Send to Media Encoder to queue the job and keep editing while it renders.
Quick Export and direct social publishing
Adobe also documents a Quick Export route. Click the Quick Export icon in the upper-right corner of the interface, name the file, select a preset, and export. Premiere also includes a social publishing workflow: enable a platform in the Publish section and enter the post details. Direct publishing works, but exporting a local file and uploading it separately is easier to inspect, reuse, and re-upload if something goes wrong.
YouTube upload settings to verify
YouTube’s upload encoding recommendations, published on its Help site, describe the following targets. Compare them with the Export Settings you choose rather than assuming the preset matches them exactly.
#1 Best Overall
- Wireless Windows Keyboard for Adobe Premiere Pro with Backlit Keys
- Visual Keyboard Shortcuts
- Bluetooth Connectivity
- Rechargeable Battery
- Container: MP4, with fast-start metadata enabled so playback can begin before the whole file downloads.
- Video codec: H.264, progressive scan, High Profile, variable bitrate, and 4:2:0 chroma subsampling.
- Frame rate: the same frame rate the footage was recorded at, where possible.
- Audio: AAC-LC is supported. The recommendations specify a 48 kHz sample rate. For stereo audio, the listed recommended audio bitrate is 384 kbps.
- SDR color: BT.709.
- Aspect ratio: 16:9 is the standard landscape size for computer players. YouTube’s player adapts to vertical or square uploads, so do not force a 16:9 frame onto content you designed as vertical or square.
Bitrate: what YouTube recommends and when to change it
YouTube publishes SDR bitrate recommendations by resolution and frame-rate class. The page does not state a publication year, so treat these figures as current platform guidance without assuming a date.
| Resolution | Standard frame rate (24/25/30 fps) | High frame rate (48/50/60 fps) |
|---|---|---|
| 720p | 5 Mbps | 7.5 Mbps |
| 1080p | 8 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| 1440p | 16 Mbps | 24 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K) | 35–45 Mbps | 53–68 Mbps |
These are recommendations for upload quality, not targets to push upward for their own sake. Higher bitrate increases file size and upload time without guaranteeing a better-looking result if the source itself is soft or heavily compressed. The adaptive preset is a sound default. Switch to manual settings when you need to control file size, upload time, or a specific bitrate, and then compare the result with the table above.

- Built for video editors: Premiere Pro's most-used commands come pre-mapped one per key, named and color-coded so you can scan quickly while you cut.
- Remap anything in KeyStudio, the browser-based remapping tool we built for Dash keyboard. Nothing to install, and the layout saves onto the keyboard so it works the same on every machine you use.
- 20 spare shortcut keycaps in the box: move the keys to match the way you actually cut and grade, rather than learning someone else's layout.
- The compact, low-profile design frees desk space and keeps your mouse within reach for better posture. Winner of the Red Dot Product Design Award in 2025 and designed in Vancouver, Canada. We've been building tools for creative work since 2009, and every Dash comes a 12 month warranty.
- Tri-mode connection across Mac, PC, iOS, iPadOS, Android and Linux: Bluetooth for three devices, 2.4GHz wireless or USB-C wired, on a 3500mAh battery good for 450 hours.
Workflow choices and their trade-offs
There is no single correct setting for every project. The main choices are these.
| Choice | Best when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Export (direct render) | You want the file immediately and are finished working in Premiere. | Premiere is busy until the render completes. |
| Send to Media Encoder | You want to keep editing while the file renders, or queue several exports. | The job runs as a separate step, so you must check that the queued file finished correctly. |
| Adaptive Match Source preset | You want source-matched settings with minimal setup. | Bitrate is set automatically from frame size, so you have less direct control. |
| Manual settings | You need an exact bitrate, frame size, or frame rate. | More values to check, and an incorrect bitrate or frame rate is easy to set by mistake. |
| Native frame rate and size | You want the cleanest motion and the most faithful match to the footage. | Output can be larger than a reduced-resolution or reduced-rate version. |
4K delivery
For 4K, choose a 4K frame size such as 2160p or 3840×2160, provided the sequence and source support it. Exporting at a resolution above your sequence does not add detail, so keep the sequence size as the reference point. 4K files are large, so confirm you have enough free space for both the render and the finished file. YouTube’s 4K guidance discusses external SSD storage and proxy editing as workflow aids. Neither is required to export a video. If you add external storage, choose it for capacity and reliability for your own project size, because the official sources do not establish a specific product or minimum specification.

HDR is a separate workflow
Standard H.264 settings are for SDR video. Adobe’s YouTube HDR guidance notes that Premiere exports SDR by default, so you must select an HDR-specific path deliberately. YouTube requires correct HDR metadata, including the transfer function (PQ or HLG), Rec. 2020 primaries and matrix, and an appropriate bit depth and codec. On the Mac workflow Adobe documents for HDR, the relevant preset is HEVC – Match Source – PQ. Do not apply the SDR H.264 bitrate table to HDR footage as though it were a complete recipe. HDR processing and playback can take longer, so Adobe suggests running a short test export first and checking it on playback before you export the full video.

- Play the exported file in a separate player and check audio sync, subtitles or titles, and any frames where motion looks uneven.
- Confirm the frame rate and frame size in the file’s properties match the sequence.
- Confirm the audio is stereo AAC at 48 kHz if you are following YouTube’s recommendations.
- Upload the file and, after processing, review the quality in YouTube’s player at the resolution you intended to deliver.
