Choose an export method based on how D3 rendered the chart: use an SVG-to-PDF workflow when you need scalable output, or capture the displayed chart as a bitmap for a quick image. D3 is a low-level toolkit, not an application with one universal export button; its visualizations can use SVG or Canvas, and the SVG method does not automatically work for Canvas.
First identify whether the chart uses SVG or Canvas
Inspect the rendered chart in your browser’s developer tools. If the visualization is drawn inside an <svg> element, it is SVG-based. If it is drawn inside a <canvas> element, it is Canvas-based. D3 works with both web standards, while its official getting-started example constructs an SVG element (D3 getting started; What is D3?).

This distinction matters: the documented serialization workflow below converts SVG markup. It is not a general Canvas-to-vector-PDF recipe.

The core workflow is to select the chart’s SVG element, serialize its XML markup with the browser’s XMLSerializer, and pass that markup to a converter that produces a PDF. One demonstration submits serialized markup to a server-side CGI script, which uses libRSVG and returns PDF or PNG as an attachment (Dashing D3: Exporting SVG to PNG).
#1 Best Overall
- CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
- Get the correct SVG. Select the chart’s root
<svg>element, rather than a surrounding HTML container. If your page contains multiple SVGs, use a selector scoped to the chart. - Serialize its markup. In browser JavaScript, call
new XMLSerializer().serializeToString(svgElement). This returns the SVG as a string; it does not itself create a PDF. - Send the SVG to a converter. Choose and maintain a server-side or client-side conversion approach that accepts SVG and produces PDF. The cited demonstration illustrates server-side conversion with libRSVG; it is an architectural example, not a guarantee that its older code or dependencies are maintained, secure, or suitable to deploy unchanged.
- Deliver and check the result. Return or save the resulting PDF, then open it and inspect labels, clipping, and fonts before using it in a presentation, document, or publication.
The demonstration sends the serialized markup to a CGI script and returns the converted file as an attachment. It mentions direct browser saving and client-side PDF generation as possible improvements, not as implemented, current compatibility guarantees. You will need to choose and maintain your own converter and file-delivery approach.
Choose PDF or a screenshot
| Need | Screenshot or bitmap | SVG-to-PDF |
|---|---|---|
| Quick one-off capture | Quick and simple (Interactive Data Visualization for the Web, 2nd Edition, chapter 15). | Requires a conversion step (Dashing D3). |
| Scaling and print sharpness | A screenshot is a bitmap at screen resolution; enlarging or printing it can make edges less sharp (Interactive Data Visualization for the Web, 2nd Edition, chapter 15). | A PDF can preserve vector artwork and scale more cleanly (Interactive Data Visualization for the Web, 2nd Edition, chapter 15). |
| What must be available | A visible rendered chart. | SVG markup and a converter (Dashing D3). |
| Canvas charts | A screenshot can capture the displayed pixels. | The cited SVG serialization example does not establish Canvas-to-vector-PDF conversion (What is D3?; Dashing D3). |
For a one-off image, a screenshot may be sufficient. If you need a graphic that remains sharp when resized or printed, PDF is usually the better target when the chart is SVG-based and the conversion preserves vector artwork.

What to do for a Canvas chart
SVG serialization will not export a Canvas drawing: the chart’s pixels are rendered into the Canvas rather than represented as SVG markup. For a quick image, capture the visible Canvas output. If you require a PDF or vector-quality result, select a rendering or export path designed for your chart and validate the output; the available sources do not establish a general Canvas-to-vector-PDF implementation.

Cookie banners are accepted before capture and 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed; each of these steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, with response headers indicating the page verdict and billing status. Troubleshooting and quality checks
- The PDF is empty or the wrong chart appears: verify that your selector targets the chart’s root SVG and that the chart has finished rendering before serialization.
- Some labels or graphics are missing: inspect the serialized SVG and the converter’s output. Confirm that required styles and visual content are represented in the markup or otherwise handled by your chosen conversion path.
- The PDF clips the chart: compare the SVG’s dimensions and viewBox with the PDF page size, then adjust the converter’s layout or page settings. Inspect the resulting PDF rather than assuming the conversion retained the intended framing.
- Text or fonts look different: check the output in the target PDF viewer. Converter and font handling can affect appearance, so verify the final file before publishing.
- You have a Canvas chart: do not pass it to an SVG serializer expecting a vector PDF. Use a screenshot for its displayed pixels or choose and validate a Canvas-appropriate export path.
These checks are practical safeguards, not claims that a particular converter or browser workflow has been tested. The older libRSVG demonstration does not establish its dependencies’ present maintenance, security posture, or compatibility.
