To back up your Google Maps saved lists, use Google Takeout and select Saved in the data list. Create and download the export, then open the archive to check that it contains the lists and entries you expect. Keep the original archive unchanged; its CSV files can be used for spreadsheet viewing or as a starting point for a carefully checked migration.

Sign in to the Google account that contains the saved places and open Google Takeout.

In the product and data selection, find and check Saved. This is the category identified by Google Maps Help for exporting saved lists.

Continue through Takeout’s export settings and create the export. Download the archive when it is made available. Delivery timing and the exact settings shown can vary; the available instructions do not establish a guaranteed delivery schedule.

Open the downloaded archive and check its contents before relying on it. A guide updated September 25, 2026, describes one CSV file per list, but Google’s retrieved Help instructions do not specify a guaranteed file schema. Verify the files and sample rows in your own export.
Choose Saved, not a similarly named Maps category
Saved is the Takeout category for saved lists. A separate category called Maps (your places) is described in the September 25, 2026 guide as covering items such as reviews and GeoJSON exports. Choosing that category may not produce the saved-list CSVs you want. After downloading, check the archive rather than assuming a similarly named category includes your lists.

What the exported CSVs contain—and what they do not establish
The September 25, 2026 guide reports that the list CSVs contain Title, Note, and URL fields, without dedicated latitude/longitude or address columns. Since the retrieved official Help instructions do not publish an export schema, treat those fields as a description of the guide’s observed format, not a guarantee for every account or export.

For a readable record: CSV files can be opened in spreadsheet applications, letting you review place names, notes, and links.

For a map migration: a CSV with titles, notes, and links is not necessarily a complete coordinate dataset or a directly importable map file. Find out whether the destination can use the URLs or requires coordinates, and verify each converted location.

For coordinate recovery: the guide describes extracting coordinates from some Maps URLs or geocoding place names. Not every URL will necessarily contain coordinates, and geocoding can select the wrong result for an ambiguous name. Review uncertain entries individually.

Do not assume the export automatically supplies KML, GPX, or a file that can always be imported into Google My Maps; the cited instructions do not establish those outcomes.

Keep the original Takeout archive unchanged as a point-in-time backup. If the data matters, store another copy separately—for example, on a USB drive—so one lost or damaged copy does not leave you without the archive.

Work from copies of the CSV files when editing or converting them. Check that the expected lists, notes, and sample place URLs are present before treating the export as a usable backup.

If you are moving the places elsewhere, test a small sample first. Confirm that the destination accepts the data you have, and inspect entries that fail to import or resolve to more than one possible place.
When a third-party converter is involved
Some converters advertise enriching Takeout files with coordinates or addresses. That requires giving the exported location data to a service outside Google. The existence of such a claim does not establish Google endorsement or guarantee that the resulting locations are correct. Consider the privacy implications and verify converted results before using them.
