Export your notes from the app you use now, keep a separate copy somewhere you control, and check a small test import before moving your whole library or closing the old account. Export options vary by app, platform and account type, and no format guarantees a perfect copy of every attachment, layout or feature.
Before switching, make an export you can keep and inspect
A migration has two separate goals: preserving a readable archive and moving usable content into another app. One file format may not serve both purposes. Choose an export the destination accepts for migration, and, if practical, keep a human-readable version as an independent reference.

1. Inventory what you need to preserve
Write down which app and account you use, where its notes are stored, and what matters in the library: notebooks or folders, nested pages, database records, scans, handwriting, images, file attachments, links, tables and formatting. This helps you choose representative notes to check later and avoid assuming every export route works for every account.
2. Choose a format for both migration and reference

Before committing to a format, check whether the destination officially accepts it, whether attachments can come along, how much hierarchy or database structure survives, and whether you can open the export without the old app. Notion lists its export options in its export guide; its import guide lists supported files and notes possible cleanup for complex layouts and app-specific styling: Import data into Notion.

3. Save a separate backup copy
Keep one export for the import process and a second copy in a location you control, such as local storage. Notion’s backup guidance recommends downloading exports and keeping them on a hard drive: Back up your Notion data. This is a storage suggestion, not a claim that the copy is encrypted or stored offsite.
Export from your current notes app
Evernote
Evernote’s documented export route requires its desktop app for Mac or Windows; export is not available in Evernote Web. In the desktop app, export selected notes or a notebook as ENEX, single-page HTML or multi-page HTML. Export notebook by notebook if that fits your library, and verify how the chosen destination handles hierarchy and attachments rather than assuming it will reproduce them exactly. Microsoft OneNote
Microsoft’s documented web route lets you download or import a notebook copy, but applies only to notebooks on a personal OneDrive account. It does not work for work or school OneDrive or SharePoint notebooks. If your notebook is in an organization account, use Microsoft’s current account- and platform-specific guidance rather than treating the web route as universal: Export OneNote notebooks.

Notion
Notion allows exports of a page, database or entire workspace as PDF, HTML, or Markdown & CSV. The Markdown & CSV option creates a ZIP containing Markdown pages and CSV database files. When exporting a parent page, enable “Include subpages” if nested pages belong in the archive. The ZIP includes an index.html sitemap to help you navigate it. See Notion’s export guide.
Apple Notes and Obsidian as destinations
If you are moving into Apple Notes, Apple documents importing Evernote ENEX files; one ENEX file can contain multiple notes, which Notes converts into new notes. Apple warns that unsupported features or attachments may not import. Apple also documents Markdown import on macOS Tahoe 26, iOS 26, iPadOS 26 and later, so do not assume that Markdown route is available on older releases. Obsidian documents imports from several apps and formats. Its Evernote-specific route uses ENEX and the official Importer plugin; its general import documentation describes other supported routes. Plugin workflows can change, so use the current guides for Evernote and other imports.

Check the export and test the move before committing
Inspect the archive
- Open the export or ZIP and confirm the expected files and folders are present.
- Open several important notes directly from the export, including one with an image or attachment.
- For Notion, check that the ZIP contains the pages and database files you expected, and use its sitemap if helpful.
Import a representative pilot batch
Before importing everything, try a small group that includes a plain note, a note with rich formatting and links, and one with attachments or unusual structure. Compare the imported versions with their originals. Notion warns that complex layouts, styling and app-specific features may need cleanup; Apple warns that unsupported Evernote features or attachments may not import. Those limits are reasons to inspect the result, not evidence that every migration will lose the same content.

Audit the destination before retiring the source
- Check that expected notes, folders or notebooks, nested pages and database records are present.
- Open images and files, follow important links, and review formatting and tables.
- Keep the original account available until the new library is usable and the separate export copy is intact.
These checks are practical safeguards, not a vendor guarantee of perfect preservation. Export formats and importer behavior differ, so judge the destination by the content you rely on.
Which export should you use?
Use a structured format the destination supports when your priority is editing and migration; keep a readable archive as a fallback when that is practical. For example, ENEX is relevant for an Evernote move to a destination with ENEX support, while HTML can provide readable exported pages. Notion’s Markdown & CSV export keeps page text and database rows in files, but not as live Notion databases. PDF is better treated as a reference snapshot than as a full editable migration. No format should be treated as a universal replica.
