To export an image from an embedded editor, finish the design, open its Download, Export, Save, or Publish control, choose an available image format, and confirm where the result will go. The exact steps depend on both the editor and the app that embeds it: one control may download a file to your device, while another may return image data or a temporary link to the host app.
Exporting an image: the steps to try first
- Finish editing. Make sure the image or page you want is selected and your latest changes are saved in the editor.
- Open the export control. Look for Download, Export, Save image, or Publish. Button names and locations vary because the host app can configure the embedded editor.
- Choose an image format. Select a format offered in the dialog. PNG and JPEG (sometimes shown as JPG) are available in the documented Adobe Express and Canva examples; Canva’s Apps documentation also lists GIF and SVG as supported formats. Those examples do not establish that every embedded editor offers all of these.
- Set any relevant options. If you need a transparent background, choose PNG and enable the transparency option if the editor provides one. Adobe’s guidance describes this route as selecting Download, choosing PNG, and enabling Transparent Background.
- Confirm the action and find the result. A Download action may save a file locally. A Save image or Publish action may instead hand the result to the surrounding app, which decides whether to display, store, or otherwise process it.
If the dialog shows a preview, format, page range, destination, or confirmation step, check those details before proceeding. Do not assume that an embedded editor’s button has the same effect as the similarly named button in another product.
Why an embedded editor may behave differently
An editor inside another website or app is not always running with its full standalone interface. The host application can decide which controls to show and, in some integrations, which formats users can choose. Adobe Express Embed SDK documentation, for example, describes format restrictions and a default supported set that includes PNG, JPEG, MP4, and PDF. That set is specific to that integration; it is not a promise about all editors, and MP4 and PDF are not image formats.
The export action can also be a hand-off rather than a file download. Adobe’s tutorial describes both a local download and a Save image action whose callback returns image data for the host page to use. Canva Apps documentation describes an export dialog in which the user selects a format accepted by the app; after confirmation, the app receives downloadable file URLs. The host app’s behavior is therefore part of the export flow, not just the editor’s design.

Choose the format for the result you need

Use the narrowest format choice that meets your need. For transparency, do not rely on a JPEG export; check for PNG and a transparency setting instead. For other formats or multi-page designs, the embedded app’s own options are authoritative.
Where did the exported image go?
First identify what you clicked and what the interface did next. A browser download may appear in the browser’s downloads list or the device’s configured download folder. A Save image or Publish control may return the image to the host app instead, with no separate file appearing on your device. In that case, look in the app’s upload, asset, or saved-content area, or follow its on-screen confirmation.

Some integrations return a URL for the host app to handle rather than saving a permanent local file. Canva documents that its export URL expires after 60 minutes. That expiry is Canva-specific: do not assume the same lifetime for another editor, or assume a returned link is permanent. If you need a lasting copy, download or save it through the host app’s supported flow while the link is still valid.
How to save the image rather than the whole design
If the result includes a surrounding whiteboard, slide, or larger canvas, first check whether you exported the page or design instead of an image element. The general remedy is to select the image or element and use an export action that applies to that selection, if the editor offers one. Another possibility is that the host app only exposes whole-design export. The available documentation does not establish a universal control for exporting just one embedded image, so check the product’s current interface or help for an element-level export option.

- Before confirming, inspect whether the dialog refers to the current page, selected element, or entire design.
- Check for a selection-specific menu or an option to export a selected object, if present.
- If the embedded app offers only a design-level export, ask its host application how to save an individual image; the editor may not control the final destination.
What to check when export does not work
- No Download or Export button: The host app may have configured a limited toolbar or a different save flow. Look for Save image or Publish, then check the app’s instructions rather than assuming the standalone editor’s controls are available.
- The format you need is missing: The host integration may restrict the accepted formats. Use one of the formats offered, or check with the host app whether it supports another output format.
- The image has a solid background: Check whether you selected PNG and enabled Transparent Background. If the editor does not offer that setting, transparency is not established for that export path.
- A file did not appear on your device: The action may have returned data or a URL to the host app instead of downloading locally. Check the surrounding app for the saved asset or a completion message.
- A returned link no longer works: For Canva Apps, the documented export URL expires after 60 minutes. Request or create a fresh export through the app. Do not apply that exact expiry to other platforms without their documentation.
- The output contains more than the selected image: Verify whether the action exports the whole page or design. If the product does not offer element-level export, its host may need to provide a different workflow.
- You canceled or returned to editing: Reopen the export control and complete the confirmation step. The exact retry flow depends on the editor and host app.
