Call page.screenshot() with a .jpeg filename or set type: 'jpeg' explicitly. Save the returned image to a file, or pass its Buffer to a Playwright Test report attachment with the MIME type image/jpeg.
Save a webpage screenshot as a JPEG file
After navigating to the page, provide a JPEG path and, optionally, the capture settings you need:

});Playwright infers the image format from the filename extension when you provide path. The explicit type: 'jpeg' makes the intent clear as well. Replace the example URL and filename with the page and destination for your report. See the Playwright Page screenshot API for the available options.
Attach the JPEG to a Playwright Test report
When the screenshot belongs in a test report rather than a standalone file, omit path and use the Buffer returned by page.screenshot() as the attachment body:

Choose the capture settings for your report
JPEG quality and file size
JPEG quality accepts values from 0 to 100; Playwright’s documented default is 80. Higher values preserve more visual detail and may increase file size, while lower values prioritize smaller files. Choose based on how the image will be read and shared; there is no single best setting for every report.

Viewport or full page
Set fullPage: true to capture the full scrollable page. Without it, Playwright captures the current viewport. Full-page images can be tall, so use viewport capture when the report only needs to show the content visible at the current scroll position.

scale: 'css' produces one image pixel per CSS pixel. scale: 'device' captures device pixels and can create substantially larger images on high-DPI devices; device is the documented default. Use CSS scale when a more compact capture at the page’s CSS dimensions is suitable, and device scale when device-pixel detail matters.

Transparency
JPEG does not support transparent backgrounds through Playwright’s omitBackground option. If the report requires transparency, JPEG is the wrong output format; consult the screenshot API options for supported formats and behavior.
Keep report captures consistent
Browser screenshots can vary with the operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. If report images need to be compared over time, keep the capture environment stable rather than assuming that identical code guarantees identical rendering. Playwright discusses this in its visual comparisons guidance.

Troubleshoot common export problems
- The output is not JPEG: Check that the path ends in
.jpegor settype: 'jpeg'. If you are attaching the returned Buffer, includecontentType: 'image/jpeg'in the attachment. - The report shows only the visible portion: Set
fullPage: trueif you need the entire scrollable page. - The image is larger than expected: Check the
scalesetting. Device scale is the default and can produce substantially larger images on high-DPI devices; considerscale: 'css'. - The image looks compressed: Raise the JPEG
qualityabove its default of 80, within the documented 0–100 range. - You need a transparent background: JPEG cannot use
omitBackgroundfor transparency. Choose an output format that supports the requirement instead. - Captures differ between runs or machines: Check for differences in browser version, operating system, headless mode, settings, or hardware, and stabilize the environment used for the report.
