Start with NASA’s Perseverance raw-image browser to find and download rover pictures; use the Planetary Data System (PDS) when you need cataloged instrument products or scientific data beyond the browser. A browser label such as “raw” or “color-processed” describes how an image is presented, not by itself whether it is calibrated or ready for scientific measurement.
Why Jezero’s images matter
Perseverance landed in Jezero Crater on February 18, 2021. Its mission includes studying whether Mars was habitable, looking for signs of past microbial life, collecting and caching samples, and preparing for future human exploration, according to NASA’s mission overview.

NASA describes Jezero as about 45 kilometers wide. More than 3.5 billion years ago, river channels spilled into the crater and formed a lake, carrying clay minerals into it. That history makes the landscape scientifically compelling; it is not evidence on its own that life existed there.
Browse and download images on NASA’s site
NASA’s image browser is the simplest way to explore returned imagery without first navigating a science-data archive. Its interactive features require JavaScript. The page includes engineering cameras such as Navcam and Hazcam as well as science cameras and instruments including Mastcam-Z, MEDA SkyCam, PIXL MCC, SHERLOC, and SuperCam.

- Introduce kids to the world of LEGO Technic with this Mars Rover building kit
- This mini build was designed in collaboration with NASA and features realistic arm movement and suspension
- With only 83 pieces, this building toy set makes a great travel toy
- Makes a great Christmas stocking stuffer, Easter basket stuffer, or just because treat for kids ages 7 and up
- Open the raw-image browser. Go to NASA’s Perseverance raw images page. If the controls or results do not load, make sure JavaScript is enabled.
- Narrow the results. Choose a camera category, then use the available date or sol filters. A sol is a Martian day, the unit used in mission records. The page also offers raw and color-processed labels, plus thumbnail and movie-frame options; not every image necessarily has every version.
- Check the caption and camera name. These help identify what took the image and provide context before you interpret details in the frame.
- Open or select images. Browse a single image or select multiple images, as NASA’s page instructions allow. Thumbnails are reduced-resolution versions of the original full-size images.
- Download the image or selection. Use the page’s download controls to save the available file or files. For measurements or a documented processing level, move on to the relevant PDS product rather than assuming a browser download is analysis-ready.
When to use the Planetary Data System
The PDS is the better route when you need cataloged data products, instrument-specific records, or product documentation. Its catalog distinguishes collections by instrument and product class; archive files are not all interchangeable photographs.
| Route | Best for | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| PDS Mars 2020 engineering-camera bundle | Cataloged engineering-camera data, including raw Hazcam products. | Read the bundle and product metadata to confirm the camera and product type. |
| PDS image-operations browse collection | Browse products listed for PIXL MCC, SHERLOC ACI/WATSON, and SuperCam RMI. | Confirm the instrument and whether the item is an EDR, FDR, or RDR browse product; the collection is specifically a browse-products archive. |
| PDS Mastcam-Z archive | Archived Mastcam-Z imagery and scientific products, including calibrated radiance and radiance-factor imagery. | Use the product label and documentation to establish processing level and suitability for the analysis you intend to perform. |
Archive records and available products can change as the mission releases data. Check the current collection metadata and product documentation when selecting files.

Raw and color-processed browser images
The browser’s raw and color-processed controls are useful for finding and viewing imagery. Those labels alone do not establish calibration, processing history, or scientific readiness. Treat a visually appealing frame as an image to inspect, not as a measurement, unless its product documentation supports that use.

Mastcam-Z is a variable-focal-length, multispectral stereo camera investigation. Its instrument description reports a 4:1 zoom and 11 unique narrow bands. NASA makes raw JPEG imagery rapidly accessible, while validated raw and derived products are archived for more formal use. The instrument’s stereo observations can support 3D topography, and its multispectral capabilities enable analyses beyond scenic viewing.

For quantitative work, use the archived calibrated radiance or radiance-factor products and consult the accompanying documentation. Stereo processing and geological interpretation depend on product type, processing, and the detail the imagery can resolve; a raw image should not be treated as automatically calibrated or analysis-ready. The instrument and data context is described in the Mastcam-Z investigation paper and in Bell and colleagues’ 2022 Science Advances paper.
