The reliable way to explore an open-world game without turning it into a joyless checklist is to run a short loop: inspect the game’s map and journal before leaving an area, reveal nearby points of interest, mark anything uncertain, complete a small local cluster, then check the progress tools again. The exact names differ by game, and some titles hide optional stories in spontaneous events rather than quest markers, so your routine must follow the game’s own tracking and discovery systems.
Start with the game’s own source of truth
Before you ride, fast-travel or sail out of a region, spend a minute with the interfaces the developers provide. A map icon is only useful if you know what it means; an empty-looking map may simply be unexplored; and a quest log may contain leads that are not represented by a marker.

Read the map legend and filters
Open the map legend, not just the map itself. Identify symbols for missions, activities, collectibles, merchants, viewpoints, caves, entrances and undiscovered locations. If filters are available, hide categories you are not working on. Selective filters reduce visual noise and make a deliberately chosen sweep possible.
Assassin’s Creed Unity is a clear example of this approach: its documented map tools include filters and custom map markers, while its progress tracker lists completed and available missions. Those are features of Unity, not a guarantee that every open-world game offers the same controls. The Unity map overview and the game manual show why learning the legend first matters.

Check every journal, board and opportunity list
Open the quest journal, objective board, rumor list or notice board before you leave. Look for entries with an incomplete objective, an approximate location, a prerequisite, or wording such as “investigate,” “find,” “return,” or “speak to.” These entries often represent content that will not appear as a permanent map icon.
Do not assume that an objective disappears merely because its marker is not visible at your current zoom level. Expand the entry, read its notes and inspect any linked region or character. If the game allows multiple active objectives, keep the ones you may encounter naturally and pause those that would pull you far away.
Use a completion or progress screen
Some games provide a region-by-region completion panel; others show only categories such as missions, activities or collectibles. Record what the game actually reports. A blank category can mean “none in this region,” “not yet unlocked,” or “not revealed.” Treat the label and its context as evidence rather than guessing.
The repeatable exploration loop
Use this six-step loop whenever you enter a new district, biome or settlement. It keeps exploration flexible while preventing memory from becoming the bottleneck.
- Orient yourself. Open the map at the new area’s boundary. Read the legend, zoom out once, and note roads, elevation, water crossings and fast-travel points.
- Review unfinished content. Read the journal and any opportunity board. Separate objectives with a precise destination from clues that describe only a broad area.
- Reveal nearby information. Activate a viewpoint, climb to a safe overlook, or use the game’s observation mode if it has one. Scan the immediate radius before travelling farther.
- Mark uncertainty. Place a custom marker for a clue, locked door, suspicious landmark or unvisited settlement. Label it briefly, such as “cave—needs key” or “rumor—north shore.”
- Work a local cluster. Complete several nearby activities in one outing instead of crossing the entire map for every individual icon. Leave distant or level-gated objectives alone.
- Recheck the records. Return to the map legend, journal and progress screen. Confirm that the mission, activity or collectible category changed as expected before you move on.
This loop is a control system, not a demand to clear every dot. If a game emphasizes discovery, leave some areas unknown and return when a clue becomes meaningful. If it exposes a detailed checklist, use that checklist only for the category you are currently pursuing.
Reveal content through viewpoints and observation
Discovery-focused games often make information a reward for looking rather than an automatic map overlay. A viewpoint can reveal nearby locations; an observation or scouting mode can identify clues, objectives and unvisited places; and the map may become more detailed as you physically explore.
In Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Ubisoft describes viewpoints that reveal points of interest and an observation ability that can identify clues, objectives and unvisited locations. The map gains detail as the player explores. The official Exploration Gameplay Overview explains this discovery model.

A practical scan pattern
- Approach a viewpoint or high ground without immediately fast-travelling away.
- Rotate the camera slowly through the full surrounding arc. Look for paths, smoke, unusual architecture, bridges and entrances, not only bright icons.
- Use observation or a similar scan ability in short passes. Mark a lead when its location is approximate.
- After the scan, move on foot or by the game’s normal traversal route through the revealed cluster. Some triggers appear only when you approach from a particular path.
- When the area is quiet, check the journal again. A newly revealed clue may have changed from a vague lead to a specific objective.
This method balances discovery with record-keeping: you still notice the world, but you no longer rely on remembering every shape on the horizon.
Write down uncertain leads instead of trusting memory
Vague clues are where many side quests and collectibles get lost. A note such as “somewhere near the river” is not a destination. Convert it into a map action immediately.
Turn a clue into a marker
- Read the complete clue, including names, landmarks, time-of-day language and prerequisite hints.
- Pan to the broad area named by the clue and place a custom marker at the most plausible landmark.
- Add a short label that preserves the reason: “three statues,” “NPC mentioned ruins,” or “locked chest—return later.”
- If the game supports marker colors or symbols, reserve one for uncertain leads and another for confirmed objectives.
- Clear the marker only after you have verified the outcome in the journal or progress screen.
In Assassin’s Creed Shadows, the Objective Board tracks selectable opportunities. Ubisoft also describes scouts that can reveal a more precise location and an optional Guided mode that assists objective tracking. These are game-specific examples of how to reduce memory burden without requiring a full external checklist; details are in the official exploration deep dive.
Use a paper or digital note when markers are limited
If the game caps the number of markers, keep a tiny external list with four fields: region, clue, required condition and next check. For example: “West marsh | bell tower rumor | after settlement quest | inspect journal after next main mission.” This is not a second checklist for the entire game; it is a parking place for information the interface cannot hold.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAdapt to the game’s side-content design
“Side quest” is not a universal category. One game may present a named chain with a clear objective marker. Another may place a short story in the world and let you discover it only by being nearby, helping a stranger or investigating a sound.
Tracked mission structure
For explicit missions, prioritize the journal’s state. Keep a small number active, read prerequisites, and complete objectives in the region where they occur. When a chain ends, inspect the journal for a follow-up entry before leaving; the next step may be offered by the same character or unlocked by a new map state.
World-event structure
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla replaced traditional side quests with shorter World Events intended to attract a curious player. Narrative Director Darby McDevitt described the choice this way: “If one doesn’t feel like it’s your mood at that moment, you let it sit there in your quest log. Maybe sometimes you just do it right away.” The interview is available in Ubisoft News.

For this structure, do not equate an uncompleted journal entry with failure. Leave an event when its tone, difficulty or location does not suit your current session, but keep a note of where it appeared. On your next pass through that region, look for the event’s environmental cue rather than expecting a permanent quest icon.

Some games intentionally limit icons. Charles, the Assassin’s Creed Shadows Game Director, said: “We didn’t want to hold the player’s hand too much with icons and markers”. In a discovery-first game, map blank space is part of the design. Use viewpoints, observation, landmarks and your own markers, then accept that a first pass may leave mysteries unresolved.
Clear a region without making it a checklist
A region sweep works best in passes. Each pass has a different purpose, so you can stop after any one of them without feeling that the session failed.
Pass one: orientation
- Identify the nearest settlement, fast-travel point and high ground.
- Read the legend and turn on only the categories relevant to your current goal.
- Open the journal and mark quests whose destinations overlap the region.
Pass two: discovery
- Activate available viewpoints or observation locations.
- Follow roads and natural routes rather than cutting directly between icons.
- Mark unusual structures, blocked entrances and clues that need a later condition.
Pass three: local completion
- Group nearby missions and activities into one route.
- Collect items that are directly on that route; do not detour across the region for a single low-priority object.
- Return to the settlement or safe point when your inventory, health or quest capacity makes continued travel inefficient.
Pass four: verification
- Open the progress tracker and compare completed versus available content.
- Check that your marker list contains only unresolved leads.
- Zoom in and inspect the edges of the region for newly revealed icons or entries.
Stop when the tracker and journal show no unresolved local objectives that you intend to pursue now. “Not yet revealed” and “not yet unlocked” are valid states; they are not reasons to comb the same hillside repeatedly.
Collectibles: choose a method that matches your tolerance for spoilers
Collectibles create a different problem from side quests because their locations may be numerous, hidden or unrelated to the narrative. Decide what kind of help you want before opening a guide.

Spoiler-light method
- Use viewpoints and observation to reveal nearby items.
- Collect objects encountered on your natural route.
- Mark suspicious locations and return after unlocking traversal abilities.
- Check the in-game category tracker at the end of each region pass.
This preserves discovery, but it may leave a few items for a later sweep.
Targeted cleanup method
- Finish the story or major regional objectives first if collectibles can be missed during missions.
- Filter the map to the collectible category only.
- Work one subregion at a time and mark every confirmed pickup.
- Use the progress screen after each subregion so you can identify a missing item without restarting the entire map.
This reduces backtracking while retaining control over how much of the solution you see.

Exact-location method
When completion matters more than discovery, a game-specific atlas can provide annotated maps and collectible locations. Ubisoft describes the Assassin’s Creed Shadows – The Complete Official Guide as a Piggyback guide containing walkthroughs and annotated maps of points of interest and collectibles; see the official announcement. Confirm the exact game, edition and region before buying or following any guide. Current retailer availability is not established here.

| Approach | What you do | Strength | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Discovery-first | Use landmarks, viewpoints and observation; keep markers sparse. | Preserves surprise and environmental storytelling. | Higher memory burden and more return trips. |
| Selective filtering | Show one map category at a time and sweep a local cluster. | Controls map clutter without revealing everything. | Requires learning the legend and maintaining a route. |
| Journal-led | Follow incomplete objectives and opportunity lists before free-roaming. | Reduces the chance of abandoning an active story. | Can pull you away from spontaneous discoveries. |
| Exact checklist | Use a complete tracker or annotated atlas for every item. | Best for final cleanup and completion goals. | Most spoilers and least room for organic exploration. |
These are practical decision axes—discovery versus explicit guidance, map clutter versus selective filters, memory burden versus journal support, and spoiler-free play versus exact locations. They describe trade-offs, not measured completion rates.

Some apparent omissions are not missed content. The objective may be locked behind a story chapter, a character’s schedule, a settlement upgrade, a tool, a weather state or a choice. The interface may also reveal an opportunity only after you have entered the correct area.
- Record the prerequisite. If an entry says “after,” “requires,” or “return later,” copy that condition into your marker label.
- Do not force a locked object. Leave a marker and continue the regional sweep; repeated attempts waste time and can make the map harder to read.
- Revisit after meaningful changes. Check unresolved markers after a main-story milestone, new traversal ability or settlement change.
- Watch for state changes. If a quest objective changes wording, reread the entry instead of following the old marker.
Keep separate markers for “unseen,” “seen but locked” and “confirmed complete.” That distinction tells you whether to search, progress the story or simply move on.
Troubleshoot a side quest or collectible you cannot find
The map shows nothing
Confirm that the relevant category is enabled, zoom in, and check whether the item is revealed only by a viewpoint, observation action or proximity. Then inspect the journal for a broad clue and place a marker manually.
The journal entry is vague
Extract every proper name and landmark from the text. Search the named region on your map, compare terrain and roads, and use a scout or guided objective mode if the game provides one. Avoid guessing from memory after you have a usable clue.

The marker points to an empty location
Check prerequisites, time or state conditions and nearby vertical levels. Look for an entrance, underground route or alternate approach. If the game has a progress tracker, verify whether the objective already counted and the marker is stale.
A world event disappeared
Return to the place where you first saw it and review the journal. Short events may be contextual rather than permanent markers. If the entry remains, follow its text rather than expecting the original icon to reappear.
The region appears complete but the total is short
Check whether the tracker separates discovered, collected and completed states. Compare neighboring region boundaries, because an item near a border may belong to the adjacent area. Re-scan after unlocking any ability that changes traversal or observation.

Keep a spoiler-safe session checklist
Save this compact routine beside your controller or in a notes app:
- Map legend read; relevant filters selected.
- Journal, objective board and opportunity list reviewed.
- Nearby viewpoint, observation point or high ground used.
- Uncertain clues converted into labeled markers.
- One local cluster completed before a long-distance detour.
- Locked or gated content labeled with its prerequisite.
- Progress tracker checked before leaving the region.
- Markers cleared only after the game confirms completion.
Use the list as a safety net, not a demand to exhaust every icon. The routine should make it easy to stop playing, resume later and know exactly what still deserves attention.
What the named Assassin’s Creed examples teach
The documented games illustrate three different solutions to the same problem. Unity emphasizes map filters, custom markers and a progress tracker, making a structured regional sweep practical. Shadows emphasizes viewpoints, observation, an Objective Board, scouts and optional Guided tracking while deliberately limiting the number of icons shown automatically. Valhalla demonstrates that optional stories can be short World Events rather than conventional side-quest chains.
Those examples should shape your questions when starting any open-world game: What does the legend distinguish? Which activities are tracked? What reveals hidden information? Can uncertain clues be marked? Does the game represent optional stories as missions, events, rumors or environmental discoveries? Answer those questions first, then choose the least intrusive method that gives you enough certainty.
