Learn how this game tracks quests
Before heading out, open the journal, map settings, and help menu. Find out which quest is currently focused, what objectives are displayed, how quest-giver icons look, and whether the map can hide categories of markers. A compass or tracker may show only the active objective, while other games use an objective board or offer little automatic guidance.

For example, The Elder Scrolls Online says a nearby available quest can appear on the compass and above its giver, and that focusing a quest puts its objectives in the compass and tracker. Its support instructions also tell players to check the map’s Filters and make sure Objectives is selected, then check HUD settings for Quest Tracker and Quest Giver Icons. That is a useful reminder: a missing marker may be hidden by a setting, not absent from the game. These labels and mechanics are specific to ESO, so use your own game’s help menu for the equivalent settings. Use markers as leads, not a complete checklist
Markers make known objectives easier to follow, but they do not guarantee that every quest or discovery is represented. Talk to residents and travelers, listen for unusual dialogue, and investigate points of interest away from settlements. The Elder Scrolls Online’s guide explicitly notes that quests are not found only in towns. In Elden Ring, Bandai Namco describes Guidance of Grace as a guide toward important things, while its general map advice encourages investigating icons; the same guide warns that NPC dialogue is a common source of missed content because some questlines advance as the player progresses. Those examples illustrate why map-following and attentive exploration work best together, not that every game behaves the same way. Explore each region with a repeatable loop
- Take stock on arrival. Note the settlement, major landmarks, visible symbols, and people with requests or unusual dialogue. Check the journal for anything already pointing to the area.
- Choose nearby leads. Follow a short route between visible objectives rather than crossing the whole map for one uncertain marker. Keep it flexible if a conversation or discovery adds a closer lead.
- Prefer clear routes before risky shortcuts. Roads and landmarks can be more efficient than terrain that looks direct but is difficult to cross. In Assassin’s Creed Shadows, for example, Ubisoft describes using roads when shortcuts would increase travel time, alongside optional navigation aids such as Pathfinder. - Revisit places when something changes. A new clue, quest, ability, or traversal option may make a previously inaccessible route or interaction possible. Ubisoft describes exploration and backtracking in Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown as ways to find resources, side quests, characters, and shortcuts. Keep a short record of unresolved conversations
If the in-game journal is sparse, record only what you need to recognize and resume a lead: the NPC’s name, where you met them, what they asked or hinted, the next step, and whether it remains unresolved. A notes app or a small gaming quest journal notebook can do the job; this is a practical tracking aid, not a game requirement. Keep entries brief enough to scan before leaving an area or making a major story choice.

Whether a quest can be missed—and which actions advance or close it—is specific to the game. Before a major story milestone, consult that game’s official help or an authoritative, game-specific missables reference if completing every quest matters to you. Do not assume there is a universal safest quest order. The general guidance here cannot identify which quests are missable in an unnamed game.

Troubleshoot a marker that seems to be missing
- Check the map’s filters and confirm objective markers are enabled.
- Check HUD settings for a hidden quest tracker or quest-giver icon option.
- Review the journal to confirm the quest is active and focused, if your game uses focus tracking.
- Read the game’s help menu or official support page for its own marker rules.
