Reframing or cropping changes which original pixels are visible; AI outpainting generates pixels beyond the frame; upscaling enlarges the image and estimates detail. These methods solve different problems, and none can guarantee recovery of information the camera never captured.
Choose the kind of expansion your video needs
“Expanding” can describe several edits. Pick the one that matches the viewing problem rather than applying every enhancement at once.

| Method | What changes | Best suited to | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reframe or crop | The visible portion and composition of the original image; no pixels outside the source are invented. | Fitting a different screen when the important subject can stay in frame. | Cropping can cut off people, objects, or context. Resizing alone may leave unused space. |
| AI frame expansion (outpainting) | New image area is generated beyond the original frame. | Making a source fit a new aspect ratio while retaining more of the original view. | Generated edges may look wrong or imply details that were not recorded; faces and hands can be difficult. |
| Upscaling or super resolution | The image is enlarged, with estimated detail added by an algorithm. | Making a low-resolution source more usable on a larger or higher-resolution display. | Estimated detail is not recovered truth and may create artifacts or alter faces and text. |
| Platform playback enhancement | The viewing service may adjust how a video is presented without changing the creator’s edited master. | When the platform offers optional brightness, clarity, or resolution improvements. | Availability and effect depend on the platform, video, and playback settings. |
Captions are a separate accessibility improvement: they add text and sound information, not image area.

Identify the platform, screen, and viewing orientation before editing. A vertical social clip, a landscape presentation, and a living-room TV do not necessarily need the same export. YouTube says 16:9 is standard for its computer player, but the player adapts to other source ratios; some vertical formats may receive padding. Its help page lists 1920×1080 as one example of a 16:9 resolution, not a universal requirement. See YouTube’s video resolution and aspect ratio guidance.

If a vertical 9:16 clip must appear in a 16:9 frame, you have three practical choices:
- Keep the vertical frame intact: use the original proportions and accept surrounding space in the landscape player.
- Crop or reframe: fill more of the landscape frame, but check that the subject and relevant action remain visible.
- Generate additional sides: use outpainting to extend the scene, then inspect the generated area throughout the clip.
Do not add black bars or padding directly to a YouTube upload simply to force a shape. YouTube advises against baking them in because they can interfere with the player’s dynamic sizing. Preview the uploaded video on the actual target device.

- DO MORE ON ONE SCREEN: See every detail on the wider display featuring a 21:9 aspect ratio; Ultra WQHD provides the simplest way to maximize screen real estate and experience truly seamless multitasking on just one screen.Brightness (Typical) : 300 cd/㎡. Static Contrast Ratio 3000:1.
- ENJOY A BILLION COLORS W/ INCREDIBLE DEPTH: With HDR10 that displays over 1 billion colors compared to 16.7 million for typical SDR technology, dark colors are darker and the brightest are even brighter; Content is experienced as the creator intended
- CARE FOR YOUR EYES DAY and NIGHT: An ambient light sensor on the monitor detects lighting in your workstation and automatically adjusts brightness; Eye Saver Mode minimizes excessive blue light, and Flicker Free relieves eye strain
- SEE CONTENT SMOOTHER, EVEN GAMING: A faster than average refresh rate updates the image on screen more often every second; 100Hz refresh rate reduces lag and motion blur when playing games, watching videos, or working on design projects
- STAY IN SYNC WITH THE ACTION: AMD Radeon FreeSync keeps the refresh rate of your monitor and graphics card in sync to reduce image tearing for a superfluid entertainment experience; Watch movies and play games without interruptions
Preserve the source and choose the least risky edit
- Make an untouched source copy. Create alternate edits from that copy rather than repeatedly resizing and exporting an already compressed version.
- Try reframing first if it preserves the subject. This requires no generated content, but it can sacrifice parts of the picture.
- Use outpainting only when the extra frame area is useful. The new borders are generated imagery, not recovered footage. For example, expand.video describes browser-based outpainting for aspect-ratio conversion and says scenery, nature, and motion are better fits than faces or hands. Those are the vendor’s capability statements, not independent comparative test results. See expand.video.
- Upscale when size or apparent clarity is the problem. Do not treat a larger output as proof that fine detail is authentic. Microsoft’s guidance for Clipchamp says results depend on source resolution, compression, and visual content, and that generated detail is an estimate that may alter identity or facial features. It states: “It can’t recover the exact visual information that was missing from the source.” See Microsoft’s Clipchamp video upscaler guidance.
Inspect the result before publishing
Automated tools can make a clip look plausible while changing its meaning or introducing visual errors. Review the whole video, not just a still frame or opening seconds.
Recommended Free Tools
- Check faces, hands, fine text, and other identity-critical details, especially after upscaling.
- Watch generated borders for flicker, distortions, inconsistent objects, or edges that shift between frames.
- Inspect motion, scene transitions, and the framing of the main subject after cropping or reframing.
- Compare the edited version with the untouched source where factual accuracy matters.
- Play the final upload on the target platform and device to catch player padding or display behavior.
Know what YouTube may change during playback
YouTube says it may improve brightness or color, increase clarity or sharpness, or apply super resolution. These enhancements are not applied to every video. Creator settings concern future uploads, while some enhancement types have viewer controls. A platform-side change can affect what someone sees during playback without creating a new edited master for the creator. Details are in YouTube’s visual enhancements guidance.

- Improved ComfortView Plus: Reduces harmful blue light emissions to ≤35%, for all-day comfort without sacrificing color accuracy.
- Refresh rate: A smooth, tear-free experience with AMD FreeSync Premium (refresh rate up to 120Hz) and an ultra-low 0.03ms response time create a captivating experience for work and play.
- Vivid colors: Immerse yourself in breathtaking 4K visuals with in-plane switching technology. Enjoy vibrant colors with 99% sRGB. The 1500:1 contrast ratio and HDR readiness deliver excellent depth and detail.

- Ultra-thin bezel: Designed with a sleek, modern aesthetic and an ash white finish, this display features ultra-thin bezels for a refined, minimalist design.
That distinction matters when diagnosing a result: a change seen in a player is not necessarily present in your exported file. Keep your source and edited master so you can compare them separately from platform playback.

Captions and subtitles can help deaf or hard-of-hearing viewers and viewers who speak another language. YouTube documents three routes: upload a caption file with timing, type captions manually, or use automatic captions when available. Its automatic captions are in the video’s default language according to the help page. Review automatic output for names, technical terms, timing, and meaningful sound cues rather than assuming it is accurate. See YouTube’s captioning instructions.

Treat automatically generated ad versions as drafts
Google Ads describes automated video enhancements that can create alternate orientations, shorten clips, or add voiceover. Additional variants may run automatically if they pass a quality review. A platform quality check does not establish that every version preserves the intended story or message. Compare each variant for subject framing, on-screen text, audio, and message continuity before using it as finished creative. See Google Ads’ video enhancement guidance.
