Judge the five-player lineup, not a headline rating: compare its results before and after the move, then check whether gameplay measures support the same conclusion. Keep the early adjustment period distinct from later performance, and account for opponents, maps, event level, format and sample size. A short winning or losing streak alone cannot show that a roster change caused improvement.
Define the roster change you are evaluating
Write down the change date and the exact five players in each lineup. Valve defines a roster as “a collection of five specific Athletes, irrespective of their current or later association with a given Team organization.” Its Valve Regional Standings (VRS) are the official system for ranking roster performance and inform direct VRS invitations. That makes the five-player unit—not just the organization name—the appropriate unit for a before-and-after comparison. Valve tournament-operation requirements.

Be precise about the question, too. A comparison can describe whether the new lineup performed better over an observed period; it cannot automatically establish that the substitution caused the difference. Coaching, roles, schedule, map pool or other simultaneous changes may also matter.

Set the baseline before interpreting results
Choose a clearly defined period before the change and a follow-up period after it. Record the number of matches, maps and rounds in each. No universal CS2 minimum sample size or waiting period is established in the cited evidence, so show the sample rather than presenting a small run as definitive.

Use periods with reasonably comparable competition where possible. Note event level, opponent strength, map and side mix, format, gaps in play, and any known role or coaching changes. Keep the same metric definitions and data provider throughout a comparison.
Separate early adjustment from later performance
Report the first results after the move separately from later follow-up. A 2022 study of professional CS:GO tournaments found that individual and collective performance dropped initially after players switched teams and then slowly recovered. The study also found an inverse correlation between player performance and the number of teams a player had joined. These findings describe CS:GO tournament data; they do not establish a universal trajectory, a CS2-specific adjustment period or what will happen to any particular lineup. Start with team outcomes
Use match or map results and tournament progress to assess whether the lineup is converting play into success. Where useful, track its VRS standing as additional context, but do not treat a ranking change by itself as proof of a roster effect: standings reflect broader performance and cannot isolate one substitution.

Raw win rates can mislead when the two periods include different opponents, maps or event formats. HLTV’s explanation of its ranking model describes team strength as time-varying and says its model uses maps and round scores from the last 18 months. That window is a feature of HLTV’s model, not a causal evaluation window for roster changes. Use rankings as context alongside observed results, not as a substitute for a controlled comparison. Use gameplay measures to explain the results
Choose a small set of measures that answer different questions. A player’s rating or box score can help explain how a lineup is performing, but it is not itself a team outcome. Interpret individual numbers in light of role, opportunities and match context.

Where suitable event-level data is available, contextual action valuation can add another lens. A 2020 framework analyzed more than 70 million in-game CS:GO events, estimated win probability at successive game states, and valued actions by the change in that probability, aggregating the result as win probability added per round. A 2020 paper noted that the methodology for HLTV Rating 2.0 was not public at the time of publication; that is a historical observation, not a claim about every later rating version. The action-valuation study. Even transparent measures can be affected by role, opponent, map, side, economy, event selection and the number of rounds observed.
Reach a conclusion proportional to the evidence
State whether team outcomes improved over the period you measured, whether supporting gameplay measures moved consistently, and how much evidence the comparison contains. Identify major differences between the two periods that could affect the result. “The roster’s results improved over the observed period” is more defensible than “the roster change caused improvement” unless the analysis can separate the move from schedule, map pool, player form, roles, coaching and other concurrent changes.
When comparing several roster moves, use the same dimensions for each: team outcomes; role-sensitive player measures; opponent and event strength; map and side mix; maps and rounds observed; and time since the move. Keep external ratings or rankings as context signals rather than causal verdicts.
