Evaluate the token as an economic system, not as a price chart: identify what continuing use requires of the token, where rewards and new supply come from, and whether measured demand and activity can plausibly support those flows when incentives change.
What does it mean for token economics to be sustainable?
For an individual project, sustainability is a question of whether its token design can support useful, continuing participation over time. The answer depends on the project’s actual functions, supply rules, incentives, usage, and governance—not on a single headline metric.

A fixed maximum supply, a burn, a high staking rate, or a rising token price is not sufficient evidence on its own. Each leaves important questions unanswered: how much supply can enter circulation and when; whether use creates demand for the token; who receives rewards and how they are funded; and who can change the rules.
No general framework can establish that a token will remain valuable or that a project will succeed. Treat the result as an evidence-based assessment of a particular design at a particular date, not as a prediction or investment recommendation.

How should you evaluate a project, step by step?
-
Define the token’s job
List the token’s stated functions—for example, paying protocol fees, participating in consensus, serving as collateral, granting governance rights, or providing access to a service. For each function, ask whether people need the token for continuing protocol use or can use the service without holding it. Distinguish a direct operational requirement from a claim that use may indirectly benefit holders.
Then identify demand drivers that do not depend chiefly on reward yield or expectations of price appreciation. Commissioner Hester M. Peirce’s August 15, 2025 recommendations identify utility and non-speculative value drivers among the subjects that may be relevant to token disclosures. Those recommendations are disclosure guidance, not a sustainability test or a guarantee of demand: SEC Crypto Task Force recommendations.

Reconstruct the supply that could reach the market
Do not stop at a maximum-supply figure. Record the initial allocation; total or maximum supply; current circulating and outstanding supply; issuance or minting rules; burns; treasury and incentive reserves; insider allocations; vesting terms; and dated future unlocks. Note which rules are fixed and which can be changed through governance.

Compare the timing and potential scale of new tradable supply with evidence of use and token demand. A headline cap does not tell you how much is already circulating, when reserved tokens may be released, or whether the supply rules are amendable. SEC Commissioner Peirce’s recommendations and the SEC’s Token Safe Harbor Proposal 2.0 identify supply, issuance, release schedules, minting and burning, and governance among relevant disclosure topics. The proposal is not an adopted universal rule; it also notes that network maturity depends on the facts and circumstances of the particular network.

Trace each reward to its funding source and recipient
For staking or other participation rewards, establish whether they come from new issuance, an existing reserve, fees or other revenue, or a mix. Identify who receives them and what activity the project intends to encourage. Then ask whether that activity leads to continuing protocol use or is attractive mainly while rewards remain high.
Incentives can help bootstrap participation, but a reward rate does not show whether the resulting activity is useful or durable. Treat reward funding and reward outcomes as separate questions: a reserve can fund rewards for a time, while newly issued tokens can dilute existing holders; neither fact by itself establishes whether the incentives create lasting demand.

Connect observed use to token demand
Look for dated evidence of actual protocol activity, fees, and users’ need for the token. Map the mechanism linking each kind of use to the token: does the activity require users to acquire or spend it, reward participants, or otherwise affect token holders? Label an indirect value-accrual claim as indirect rather than presenting it as a necessary consequence of usage.

A burn is not automatically large enough to offset new supply. Berachain Holdings’ 2026 Form 10-K, for example, warns that BERA fee burns are not guaranteed to offset inflationary issuance or vesting releases; that issuer disclosure describes a risk, not an independent verdict on the model: Berachain Holdings, Inc. 2026 Form 10-K.

Find who can change the economics
Review who can propose or approve changes to supply, emissions, reward distribution, treasury policy, burns, or other token parameters. Record the approval process and any relevant concentration of voting power, insider allocations, or large-holder positions and release schedules. Verify claims such as “fixed supply” against the project’s actual governance powers.

Sei Development Foundation’s 2026 S-1/A describes a 10 billion SEI maximum supply and also says governance can propose changes to issuance, supply dynamics, or redistribution. The filing illustrates why a stated cap and the authority to change economic parameters are separate facts; it is issuer disclosure, not a claim that such a change has occurred: Sei Development Foundation 2026 S-1/A.

Test the design under changing incentives
Consider what would need to remain true if rewards fell, reserves were depleted, or issuance and unlocks continued while usage weakened. Ask whether users still have a reason to use the protocol and whether its economic design still supports the participants needed to operate it. This is a scenario analysis, not a forecast: state the assumptions and evidence behind each case rather than treating today’s participation rate as proof of future demand.

How can you compare token designs consistently?
Use the same evidence categories for every project you compare. A shared checklist makes gaps visible; it does not turn unlike systems into a single reliable sustainability score. These categories align with disclosure topics in the SEC Crypto Task Force recommendations and the Token Safe Harbor Proposal 2.0.

| Comparison axis | Evidence to record | Question to answer |
|---|---|---|
| Token function and demand | Protocol functions, required holdings or payments, and dated evidence of user demand | Does continuing use create a concrete need for the token, or is demand chiefly incentive- or speculation-dependent? |
| Supply | Current circulating and outstanding supply, total or maximum supply, allocations, and reserves | What supply exists now, and what could become tradable? |
| Issuance and release pace | Minting or emission rules, vesting terms, unlock dates, and governance-change powers | When and at what potential scale can new supply enter circulation? |
| Rewards | Funding source, recipients, intended activity, and dependence on ongoing incentives | What is being paid for, and does it appear to create continuing use? |
| Usage and fees | Dated activity and fee evidence, plus the mechanism connecting use to the token | Is usage meaningful to token demand or value accrual, and how direct is the connection? |
| Burns and other value mechanisms | Burn, fee, buyback, or other stated mechanism alongside issuance and unlocks | How does the mechanism compare with new supply over the same period? |
| Governance and concentration | Decision rights, approval process, insider and treasury allocations, and release schedules | Who can change the design, and how concentrated are control and potential supply? |
What do published project figures show—and what do they not show?
Issuer filings can make supply mechanics and stated risks easier to inspect, but their figures need to be read with their dates and scope. The following are examples, not benchmarks for other projects or proof that either design is sustainable or unsustainable.
| Project and filing | Disclosed figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| SEI — Sei Development Foundation, 2026 S-1/A | 10 billion SEI maximum supply; approximately 121 million SEI in aggregate monthly unlocks as of June 23, 2026. | The filing also describes allocations and governance powers related to supply and distribution. The maximum does not mean all tokens are already circulating, and the unlock figure is tied to the stated date. Check current records before using either figure to assess present conditions. SEC-filed S-1/A. |
| BERA — Berachain Holdings, Inc., 2026 Form 10-K | Approximately 10% new BERA generated annually, according to the filing; the rate may be adjusted by community governance. | The filing describes BERA and BGT functions, incentives, unlocks, and uncertainty about whether fee burns will offset issuance or vesting. The annual generation figure is an issuer disclosure, not a universal rate or an independent measurement of sustainability. SEC-filed Form 10-K. |
How should you handle dates, sources, and uncertainty?
- Date every metric. Supply, emissions, unlock schedules, usage, and governance can change; do not present a dated filing figure as a current live value.
- Prefer primary records where available. Check protocol and governance records, then reconcile disclosed figures with on-chain data. Record what each source actually measures rather than treating all supply definitions as interchangeable.
- Separate disclosure from verification. A company filing is evidence of what the issuer disclosed and of risks it described; it is not an independent audit of every on-chain figure or a prediction that the design will work.
- Make unknowns visible. If a supply component, reward source, or governance power cannot be verified from the records you have, mark it as unconfirmed rather than filling the gap with a circulating market claim.
- Keep comparisons method-consistent. Compare projects using the same supply definitions, date ranges, and usage measures. If those differ, disclose the mismatch rather than implying the figures are directly comparable.
What should your final assessment say?
Write a conclusion that names the evidence supporting continuing participation, the main pressures from issuance or releases, and the conditions on which the design depends. State the data date and separate observed facts from assumptions. If demand depends heavily on rewards, governance can alter supply, or a burn is being relied on to counter issuance, make those dependencies explicit. A sound assessment can still conclude that the available evidence is inconclusive; it need not force a sustainable/unsustainable label from incomplete or changing data.
