Western Digital (WDC) is now an HDD-focused company, not the former combined hard-drive and flash-memory business. It completed the separation of its Flash business into Sandisk on February 21, 2025, and reported no Sandisk shares remaining as of July 3, 2026. To evaluate WDC today, focus on hard-drive demand, revenue mix, customer concentration, cash generation, debt and earnings that exclude one-time separation-related gains.
Start with the company WDC is today
Western Digital’s old two-business structure is historical context. The company’s FY2026 Form 10-K reports the Flash separation as completed and says WD held no Sandisk shares at year-end, July 3, 2026. Sandisk is a separate company; its post-separation results are not part of WDC’s current operating business. WDC’s current filing does not report a Flash operating segment. That change matters when reading past performance. For pre-separation periods, Sandisk results are presented as discontinued operations; after separation, Sandisk is no longer consolidated into WD. Compare periods only after checking which businesses are included, rather than treating the former combined company as a consistent historical baseline.
Measure WDC’s current revenue mix
Western Digital reported $12.919 billion in FY2026 revenue. Cloud supplied nearly nine-tenths of that total, making WDC’s results particularly sensitive to cloud and enterprise storage demand.
#1 Best Overall
| FY2026 end market | Revenue reported by Western Digital | Approximate share of total |
|---|---|---|
| Cloud | $11.490 billion | 89% |
| Client | $726 million | 6% |
| Consumer | $703 million | 5% |
| Total | $12.919 billion | 100% |
Revenue and end-market figures are Western Digital’s FY2026 reported results; percentages are approximate calculations from those figures. See the company’s FY2026 earnings materials. The smaller Client and Consumer businesses diversify the customer set somewhat, but they do not change the fact that Cloud is the primary revenue engine.
Separate capacity shipments, pricing and margins
WDC reported FY2026 revenue growth of 36%, exabytes sold up 25%, and average selling prices per exabyte up 8%. These are complementary indicators: shipment capacity growth describes volume, while average price per exabyte describes realized pricing. Neither alone tells the whole story about revenue or profitability.
The company attributed Cloud growth to stronger shipments of high-capacity enterprise products and an improved pricing environment. It also attributed gross-margin expansion to shipment levels, a newer-generation cost structure, and a mix shift toward higher-capacity drives. Treat these as management’s explanation of reported performance, not evidence that prices, mix or margins will continue to improve. Its filing says AI-related workloads and long-term cloud data-storage demand are benefiting HDD demand, while higher-capacity drives involve greater manufacturing complexity and longer lead times. Those are company disclosures and outlook framing, not an independent forecast.

Do not value FY2026 earnings at face value
Western Digital reported FY2026 continuing-operations net income of $9.424 billion, including a $6.498 billion mark-to-market gain on its retained Sandisk interest. The company reported no Sandisk shares remaining at year-end. That gain is not recurring HDD operating profit, so a P/E ratio using headline FY2026 earnings can make WDC appear cheaper than its ongoing business warrants.
For a more useful view, distinguish operating performance from separation-related accounting effects. WDC reported FY2026 revenue of $12.919 billion, gross profit of $6.311 billion and operating income of $4.453 billion. Its Q4 FY2026 results included revenue of $3.747 billion, GAAP gross margin of 54.1%, GAAP operating income of $1.563 billion, GAAP diluted EPS of $8.21, operating cash flow of $1.39 billion and free cash flow of $1.28 billion. The quarter’s EPS is also not a substitute for normalized annual earnings.
When estimating normalized earnings, review transaction-related expenses as well as the Sandisk gain. The FY2026 filing identifies costs associated with debt-for-equity exchanges, convertible-note transactions and equity-for-equity exchanges. Also check how such transactions affected share count and interest expense. A defensible valuation can triangulate operating income, cash flow, debt and interest expense, and an earnings estimate that excludes unusual gains and costs, rather than relying on a single reported EPS figure.
Management guided to Q1 FY2027 year-over-year revenue growth of 42% to 49%; that is guidance, not a realized result. The August 5, 2026 earnings release quotes CEO Irving Tan describing Q4 revenue as up 44% year over year and margins as expanded. That comment is management’s characterization of the quarter, not an independent forecast. The Q4 and FY2026 release and related earnings materials.
Test the durability of demand against customer concentration
WDC’s top ten customers accounted for 73% of FY2026 revenue. Three customers individually represented 16%, 15% and 13%. High concentration means the timing of large orders, customer bargaining power and changes in cloud or enterprise spending can move results materially. A strong shipment period does not by itself show that demand is evenly distributed or durable.
Look for evidence across multiple reporting periods: whether capacity shipments are growing, whether price per exabyte is holding up, and whether margins and cash generation remain healthy. WDC says customers are seeking higher-capacity drives and some are engaging earlier and extending commercial arrangements. Longer lead times and customer commitments may offer visibility, but do not remove exposure to changes in orders, pricing or customer plans.

Assess cash returns, debt and operating risks
Capital returns are one input, not a promise of future performance. WDC reported $2.59 billion of share repurchases in FY2026 and $3.26 billion remaining under its repurchase program as of July 3, 2026. It also reported FY2026 dividends of $0.50 per share. In August 2026, the board declared a $0.15-per-share dividend payable September 17, 2026 to shareholders of record September 8, 2026. These are dated company announcements and historical amounts; check current filings for subsequent changes.
Compare cash returned with cash generated and financial obligations. Repurchases can reduce shares outstanding, but their value to continuing shareholders depends on the price paid and the company’s capacity to fund them. Examine operating and free cash flow alongside debt, interest expense, capital needs and any other obligations before concluding that buybacks or dividends are sustainable.

Best Value
- Volatility in storage demand and product pricing.
- Reliance on a limited supplier base and vulnerability to manufacturing or supply-chain disruptions.
- Competitive products and pricing, plus the need to develop and execute new technologies.
- Customer relationships, concentration and the possibility of changes in customer spending or orders.
- Debt and other financial obligations.
- Execution and other effects of the Sandisk separation.
These risks can affect both the amount and timing of cash flows, so they matter to valuation as well as to a qualitative assessment of the business. See the company’s FY2026 Form 10-K for its full risk-factor disclosures.
Compare WDC with peers on a like-for-like basis
Do not compare post-separation WDC directly with its former combined-company results or with a competitor before aligning what each company owns and reports. For any peer comparison, build the comparison around the current business perimeter and the same fiscal period. Then check:
- How much revenue comes from cloud, enterprise, client and consumer markets.
- Demand exposure and growth in capacity shipped, alongside average selling prices and product mix.
- Customer concentration and the degree of dependence on large buyers.
- Gross and operating margins, capital intensity and free cash flow.
- Debt, interest expense, share count and capital returns.
- Valuation multiples based on normalized earnings or cash flow, not unadjusted earnings distorted by unusual gains.
A peer with flash-memory exposure is not a direct match for today’s HDD-focused WDC simply because both sell storage products. Differences in product economics, reporting periods and business mix can make headline multiples misleading.
Build a conditional investment case
WDC may merit further consideration if you believe demand for high-capacity HDD storage can support shipment growth and pricing, and if the company converts that demand into durable margins and free cash flow after accounting for customer concentration, investment needs and financial obligations. A more cautious view follows if recent revenue growth or margins depend heavily on temporary pricing, a few large customers, or accounting gains that do not recur.
Before deciding, use a current share price and current share count to calculate valuation from normalized earnings and cash flow, not from FY2026 net income without adjusting for the Sandisk gain. Test more than one scenario for shipment growth, pricing and margins, and weigh each against the balance sheet and the risks in the filing. The evidence cited here establishes reported results and management guidance through FY2026; it does not establish a current stock valuation, target price or expected return.
