Evaluate a packaging stock’s dividend by asking whether cash from operations can cover the investment needed to keep the business competitive, interest and debt obligations, and the payout through a weaker part of the cycle. A high yield, growing adjusted EBITDA, or a progressive-dividend policy is not enough on its own. Start with the company’s materials, products and customers; rebuild cash flow from filings; then test the balance sheet and dividend under less favorable operating conditions.
Start by identifying what the company actually sells
“Packaging” covers businesses with different customers, assets and cost drivers. Corrugated containers, paperboard cartons, flexible films, rigid containers, labels and closures should not be treated as one uniform industry. Map the company’s major formats, end markets, regions and customer concentrations before comparing cash flow or valuation.

The mix can shape both resilience and exposure. Amcor describes flexible and rigid packaging serving nutrition, health, beauty, wellness and specialty applications; its FY2026 report puts those categories at approximately 60%, 25% and 15%, respectively. These are issuer-reported portfolio categories, not market-share estimates. Graphic Packaging, by contrast, describes consumer packaging made from renewable or recycled materials, including cartons, trays, carriers, cups and bowls. Its filing identifies risks including raw-material and energy volatility, changing consumer buying habits, competition and substitution. Amcor FY2026 annual report; Graphic Packaging 2025 Form 10-K.
For each major segment, compare unit volumes and utilization, realized selling prices, and how quickly higher or lower costs pass through to customers. Relevant costs can include recovered and virgin fiber, resin, aluminum, energy, chemicals and freight. Also review contract structure, customer bargaining power, plant age and downtime, announced capacity additions, closures, acquisitions and divestitures. Where shipping-day adjustments are relevant, check whether reported volume changes account for them.

Rebuild cash generation from the cash-flow statement
Begin with several years of net cash provided by operating activities, not just adjusted EBITDA or a company-defined free-cash-flow measure. Trace unusual movements in working capital, cash taxes, pension contributions, restructuring, acquisition and integration costs, asset sales and securitization programs. Then subtract capital expenditure and examine acquisitions and other major cash uses separately.
Operating cash flow can be positive while capital spending is higher. Graphic Packaging reported $841 million of operating cash flow and $922 million of capital spending in 2025; in 2024, the respective amounts were $840 million and $1.203 billion. The filing also describes investment in a new recycled-paperboard facility. Those totals do not establish that the dividend was uncovered: capital spending can include growth investment, and the figures alone do not show the maintenance portion, working-capital effects or other relevant cash movements. Graphic Packaging 2025 Form 10-K.
Look for management’s maintenance-versus-growth capex split. If it is not disclosed, do not assume all spending is optional or that every dollar is a recurring maintenance need. Instead, assess asset age, required upkeep, announced projects and the likely run-rate investment needed to sustain the business.

Test whether the dividend survives after reinvestment and debt service
Calculate both earnings payout and cash payout, but treat neither as a complete safety test. Compare declared dividends with actual cash paid and with cash available after recurring investment and debt obligations. Check the payment history, share count, currency and tax context, and the board’s capital-allocation priorities.
Graphic Packaging paid $128 million in dividends in 2025, versus $122 million in 2024. That is evidence of cash distributions in those years, not proof that a given payout is sustainable across a full cycle. Put the payments beside operating cash flow, capital needs, interest, debt repayment and any one-off cash items. Graphic Packaging 2025 Form 10-K.
Stress the payout using a plausible lower-cash-generation case. Ask whether the company can still pay interest, meet maturities, preserve covenant headroom and fund necessary reinvestment without weakening the balance sheet. A stated “progressive” or target dividend is a policy signal, not a guarantee. Smurfit Westrock says its planned capital returns are subject to board approval and factors such as financial condition, results, liquidity, earnings, legal requirements and debt-covenant compliance. Read the debt notes, not just headline leverage
Debt can reduce the cash available for dividends and investment, particularly when maturities cluster, rates float or covenants restrict distributions. Read the notes and risk factors for maturity dates, fixed- and variable-rate exposure, secured debt, liquidity facilities, covenant definitions and restrictions on dividends or share repurchases.

These are company-reported figures for that date; assess their significance alongside the filing’s definitions, maturity schedule, restrictions and cash-generation outlook. Use conservative cash generation rather than a peak-cycle EBITDA denominator when evaluating debt service. Credit ratings are one input, not a substitute for this review. Normalize the cycle and treat forecasts as scenarios
Year-to-year results can be distorted by changes in volume, price, product mix, input costs, freight, downtime, productivity, currency and working capital. When the issuer provides a segment bridge, use it to distinguish recurring performance improvements from temporary spreads or one-off effects. Smurfit Westrock’s Q2 2026 presentation, for example, shows regional operating variation and lists freight and energy cost increases; it illustrates the value of examining drivers, not a sector-wide forecast.

Smurfit Westrock’s presentation gave FY2026 adjusted EBITDA guidance of $4.9–$5.1 billion and capital expenditure guidance of $2.4–$2.5 billion. Both are issuer-defined, non-GAAP forward-looking measures, not realized results. The presentation cautions that actual performance may differ materially and that certain non-GAAP forward measures are not reconciled because future reconciling items cannot be predicted with sufficient precision. Treat these targets as management’s scenario, not as a dividend guarantee. Smurfit Westrock Q2 2026 results presentation.

Value normalized cash flows, not a single headline multiple
Only compare valuation measures after making their assumptions consistent. Possible lenses include enterprise value to normalized EBITDA or operating cash flow, free-cash-flow yield under an explicit capex assumption, and dividend yield supported by a stress-tested payout. Account for debt, pensions, leases, minority interests, acquisitions and material one-off items where relevant.
Best Value
A discounted cash-flow model should disclose its assumptions for revenue, margins, working capital, capital expenditure, discount rate and terminal value. Graphic Packaging’s filing lists these kinds of inputs in its fair-value analysis and notes sensitivity to them; that is an example of what assumptions can matter, not a prescribed valuation result. No share price or current valuation multiple is established here, so any valuation conclusion should name the share-price date and financial period used. Graphic Packaging 2025 Form 10-K.
There is no single “correct” packaging-stock multiple independent of growth, cyclicality, balance-sheet risk, reinvestment requirements and accounting adjustments. Make the assumptions visible and compare companies on a through-cycle basis rather than allowing one favorable year or a high current yield to determine the verdict.
